As a fat person, I’m 5’7” and weigh 245lbs. I think body positivity should be separate from weight. I am body positive, my meat bag contains my soul, however, I understand that I am unhealthy, and should lose weight for my wellbeing. Yeah, it's not about ignoring a healthy lifestyle. You can love your body in any stage that it is cause in the end that's all we got, I need to live with this, so I might as well not shit on my own self image everyday cause "I'm unhealthy" being unhealthy physically is easier to overcome than having unhealthy thought patterns with low self steem and some body dysmorphia

drdsasterify 100% Agree with this! I was 90lbs at 29 years old. Felt like utter garbage everyday and was super weak. My metabolism was too fast and I couldn’t keep weight on. So, I got a personal trainer for 2 years. By the time I was 30 I put on 20lbs of muscle. I am not 32 and I do kickboxing now because for me it’s a better overall workout and it afforded me the opportunity to complete a 5k. When I tell people that at this point I have put on 30lbs putting me at 118 lbs, I get the question You mentioned our I hear “Oh you’re still so skinny though!” I ignore that shit now. I find it incredibly rude to say that to someone. If roles were reversed and I told a larger person “Oh you’re so fat!” That is considered rude so why is it okay to say that to a skinny person...?

I'd add that being beautiful aint the same as being heathy. Saying fat people are beautful doesn't mean we don't want em to take care of themselfs. Fat saming needs to be stopped and fat people already know they need to lose weight they don't need reminders. They just need people to be there for em when they need. most of the time we don't shame people that smoke yet they are as or even more unhealthy than obese people.

As i was listening to this podcast I realized I was one of the person who commented a few years ago when she really started losing a getting much slimmer, asking whether she was doing alright. As she said, it did absolutely come from a place of care, I was legitimately worried that she had some kind of underlying health issue making her so skinny. At the time I was dealing with a pretty bad cancer scare so I definitely projected my own worries onto her. Now looking back I realize that it was none of my business. They are absolutely right that I wouldn’t have commented the same on a male’s channel. That’s not fair and inappropriate. Bottom line: I am sorry for putting my nose in your business all these years ago, and thank you for being patient with us as we grow along side you guys. Also thank you so very much for sharing your fitness journey on Snapchat, it has motivated me to go to the gym and not fear all of those gym bros. Truly appreciated :)

I understand what Ben is saying about Lizzo. However, people are only interested in talking about how Lizzo is ‘unhealthy’ when she shows her body. I think the importance of Lizzo showing her bodies is not to ‘promote obesity’ but to give other overweight people representation that you can be overweight and successful/beautiful/loved. Overweight people KNOW they should be healthy. It is not others job to police their bodies

I think that Lizzo as an individual is great as an inspiration of sorts, showing plus size women that they can be proud of themselves and beautiful regardless of their weight. The problem lies in toxic positivity and the "body positivity" people who are fundamentally anti-weightloss, and started attacking Lizzo for drinking a goddamn smoothie.

Re: Lizzo. For me this isn’t so much about deciding that you are beautiful at any weight, health be damned (though you can’t determine how healthy someone is by looking at how big they are, and beauty does come in all shapes and sizes). But I think it’s important that you don’t wait to live your best life until you lose weight. If your body is 100 pounds overweight right now, that shouldn’t stop you from participating in life every bit as much as you can. Lizzo is clearly enjoying herself when she performs, and I think that’s awesome. If you’re heavy, you probably know how the years can go by without you hitting or approaching your ‘ideal’ weight. What a shame it is if you miss out on lots of great experiences waiting for that to change. So personally, I try not to worry about how I look doing things, and just try to be present and have fun. Your ability to enjoy life shouldn’t be limited by your weight.

@@lushpapaya9932 Yes but that doesn't mean morbidly obese people don't deserve to enjoy life as fully as everyone else. When or if someone chooses to lose weight it is their decision alone, and shaming people about their health doesn't motivate them to lose weight. While yes, of course we should encourage people to be healthy and maintain a healthy weight, constantly yelling at them about how unhealthy they are and treating them as if they're worth less than other people isn't the way to go about it. That's where I think body positivity should come in. Besides, if someone chooses to be unhealthy, it's none of your business.
@xNagisaChan
@xNagisaChan 3 жыл бұрын
I wholly agree. Regardless of your weight, or your overall health in general, you have every right to enjoy your life! And no one should shame you for being over or underweight. But at the same time, I also don't think we should sugarcoat it and say everyone is just fine at every weight. I myself was 233lbs at 5'7". I'm absolutely obese, and I can tell it in my everyday life. I used to be 135lbs before moving to America, and my life quality has absolutely decreased. I've recently started losing weight again, (23lbs so far in the last 3 months, solely by eating healthier and drinking less soda. Waiting for Covid numbers to go down before starting the gym as well, 100F+ arkansas summers are not nice to outdoor exercising lol) That said, even though my inlaws are amazing, they're telling me I "shouldn't lose too much weight". That I look great the way I am now, and that I shouldn't drop more than 30 pounds total. I appreciate them wanting me to feel better, but that kind of "body positivity" doesn't help. It's demotivating. They mean well, but I'd rather them support me in losing weight and being healthier. There's a difference between wanting someone you love to be healthier, and bodyshaming a random stranger on the street or internet.

Absolutely the same. My favourite days to go to the gym are friday saturday sunday. There's maybe 4 other people there and you can have a fiddle with the machines and equipment you aren't familiar with. When it's busy i stick to the cable machines and the exercise specific machines like chest press or leg extention stuff then on weekends i head towards the giant machines of weighty doom. Being a person who has little social life helps free up the weekends for gym exploration lol

An important thing to remember at the gym: Walking into a gym only to snicker at or judge the people who are overweight is exactly like walking into a hospital only to judge and make fun of the sick and disabled people. It's just never appropriate.

No it's not but unfortunately it does happen. My dad has a few health issues that make working out really really hard so he gains weight faster than he can lose it. He started going to a gym a few years ago and of course he was the biggest person there so he felt uncomfortable and people would side-eye him and woman even told him he should be at home doing his workout. He hasn't gone back since. It was such a blow to his esteem and motivation. And its freaking stupid that people act like that

About the gym and the machines. I got a little confused. Because here (Germany), most gyms dont let You use the machines right away if you're New to the gym. In my case I had to had an instruction day, where You follow one of the gym Trainers to All the machines and listen to the instruction, how to change the machine to your liking what type of weights to use, the safest way to use the machines etc. And only if You did that, you're free to Come and go when ever You liked. But that instruction day with the Trainer is mandatory. And to me it was very helpful because i didnt get discouraged or felt silly using the machines?

I feel like body positivity should be about realizing you are worthy and not less than just because of your weight. Weight and you outward appearance should not be the basis of your self identity. At the same time, you can be accepting of your weight and love yourself while still actively trying to become a better version of yourself.
@a.samism
@a.samism 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with this- and I think it's Ben's misconception (and really a lot of people's) of what body positivity is, which is that fat people have worth and that you don't have to be skinny to be valid- that you aren't less. It makes me sad when people say that it hurts people, because it comes along the line of saying that fat people aren't worthy of attention, pride, or love.
@colorbar.s
@colorbar.s 2 жыл бұрын
losing weight isn't necessarily "becoming a better version of yourself" though. people praise weight loss even when it's through illnesses and deadly eating disorders. People get told they should go back into their eating disorder so they can be skinny again, or they "looked better when (they) were ill". a lot of the times, accepting yourself the way you are is way healthier than any weight loss program that fucks up your relationship with food for the rest of your life. unless they themselves want to change, fat people are perfect the way they are. this is talking about your everyday fat person, not the people who are genuinely in danger, although they do deserve respect and human decency too. it's not up to us to tell people to change their bodies.

Omg Ben just made me remember something that happened few years ago! I was trying to lose weight and running outside every 2 days minimum. And it was a summer morning, it was HOT outside. Crazy hot. And I struggled to do my 5K that day. I was pushing myself like crazy. And as I was ending my run, and entering my driveway, a lady, who was running everyday, passed by me, and just showed me a thumbs up. And I cried. It was so encouraging. I took it like ''yas gurl, you did it. Hard day today but be proud, you did it''. And I was so proud of myself.

I feel exactly the same way. I feel that gaining weight affects your mood in so many ways. I'm a big quitter, and I wasn't able to make myself go to the gym just because I wasn't enjoying it. And I was completely ok with gaining weight. I also felt that I'm not sociable person, and even though I have a boyfriend, I felt that I need someone else to make me go to the gym. And as a result, I hit that 200 lbs mark and I don't have any friends or anyone to spend time with. For months I was experiencing depression. My mental and physical health was at my worst. Last month I started going to the climbing gym. And I'm doing it without anybody, because noone will give a shit about me. I had to accept this fact in order to make myself go to the gym and make progress towards a healthy lifestyle. I know having a buddy will make it better, but essentially, you just have to try to love yourself to make progress. I hope you will be successful in your life journey!

About the whole "a guy isn't gonna get comments about his weight where a woman is" discussion: while it's true that it is more common for women to get comments on their image, men do get it also. I remember last summer there was a picture of Jason Momoa in a bathing suit with his family and the media and everyone were saying he had a "dad bod" and I found it so ridiculous because he was still so fit he just wasn't actively cut for a movie role and if THAT is a dad bod then every dad I've ever seen has been o-freaking-bese. AND back when Twilight: Eclipse came out, Taylor Lautner was constantly getting asked about his body and his diet and workout, even though the other actors were being asked questions about their ACTING work. So it definitely does happen, just differently than women.

I like to think of it as body acceptance rather than body positivity. Like I think you can respect your body and treat it with kindness while also acknowledging that it's overweight and that being overweight doesn't make you a bad person. For me at least, my weight has been much more an issue of mental health than physical health, and shaming myself over how it looks just locked me into that self hate spiral where I felt like there's no point in even trying to get healthy because I'm not worth the effort. It's hard to find the right motivation for self improvement when you're that far into the cycle, so being able to accept that this is just what my body looks like right now and that that's okay was a huge step for me being able to actually take some positive steps forward to work on my mental and physical health.

I am having a similar issue as Ben did when he was in his early 20’s. I’m in my 4th year of undergrad, have been dealing with clinical depression with a therapist and psychiatrist, and I am 280 lbs. A big problem for me currently is that even though I feel somewhat better emotionally because of my mental health help and ready to care about my health, losing 100 lbs seems like an insurmountable task that I am not confident in overcoming. Sometimes that makes me feel so afraid to fail that I never start or keep on a healthy track.. it’s very frustrating. And it does somewhat feel like I am self sabotaging. I feel a bit like I’m trying to lose weight to help my mental health but my mental health needs to be in a place to tackle this huge task of weight loss, and balancing those two things are causing some struggles for me. Thank you Ben for sharing that, though, because It makes me feel better to hear other people experienced the same thing I’m going through now and came out of it in a positive way.

I'm a second year undergrad and I gained a lot of unwanted weight my freshman year. I'm a woman so I really understand the struggles that were talked about in this video of being a woman that doesn't know how to do anything in the gym. I went for a lot time not caring about my health. I struggle with severe anxiety and PTSD. I decided I was going to go on this health journey for me. That's been the main focus, me. Before I've felt my attempts were because that was what was expected of me, or I didn't want to be judged. But at the end of the day, I want to eat better, be more active, and be a lot kinder to myself, and it's something I strive to do every day. It's hard, but it's a goal you can always work towards, incorporating both mental and physical health into doing things to make you feel better. I struggle at the gym, and when I see others that look new or just aren't as buff, I get happy, because I hope they're on the same journey as me, trying to do well for them. You got this. It is expertly convenient that this was posted as I was walking into the gym. I’m not new to the gym, but I’ve gone off and on since my freshman year of college. I struggle with motivation. I’ve been watching you for a few years, I guess since polish mountain. It HAS been empowering to see you, a more “normal person” at the gym. Your realistic transformation in body and confidence HAS helped me keep going this time around. I know that progress is out there if I work hard. You’ve also inspired me to stop all the boring cardio and start exploring the significantly more fun world of weight lifting. I never picked up a barbell before seeing you do it. I appreciate you putting such a positive force on the internet.

In regards to the love of food: When you digest food in your intestines, theres different kinds of bacteria that live there and help you digest. The type and amount of bacteria actually depends on the food you eat, so eating unhealthy fast foods regularly will make the bacteria that digest that multiply, because they have so much sustenance. Those bacteria also make you crave the same kind of food that they themselves eat. So, if you eat healthy and diverse foods regularly the microbiom, the bacteria, in your intestines will start craving healthy foods. Its just a matter of keeping at it for long enough. Also, there might be some kind of pro- or prebiotics available at your pharmacy to help the process. But I would suggest either consulting your doctor or pharmacist about it first. I work in a pharmacy in Germany, so I kind of know what I'm talking about, but sorry if the english isnt so great. 🙈

I just want to thank Ben so much for talking about this. From the ages 18 to 21 I gained alot of weight, going from 115 to 200 pounds in a pretty short time span. I stopped playing high-school sports and developed an eating disorder trying to deal with my self image and clinical depression. And you just feel so helpless and angry pat yourself for letting yourself get to that point. I also wished people talked about how you're treated as well. At my heaviest I remember talking to a group of girls who were bigger than me, talking about the issue of finding clothes that you feel confident in. And I was told that I was a skinny bitch who wouldn't understand. That fucks you up in the head even more that being called fat. You start second guessing yourself and feel alienated from people who you thought would understand the issue with body dismorphia and the emotions that come with it. Its just as much a mental disease as it is physical.

I think you guys give a very overall positive message. But as someone who has a condition and disease that has always contributed to being overweight. I think the message of all bodies are positive is important. I’m only 19 and have had many eating disorders. When I was 16 I was still clinically overweight but the smallest I have ever been. I had a sever eating disorder and was on strict diet. I still struggle but now seeing positivity towards all bodies really truly helps my mentality. ❤️

I was having that exact conversation earlier about how, as a teen, we were exposed to tons of "thinspiration" and I was trying to follow fashion designers as someone into sewing and was exposed to so many seriously underweight model photos that I can't imagine anyone in that era not struggling with body image to some degree. Even though the current curvy standards are somewhat harmful, I think they're definitely causing fewer eating disorders.

Commenting on the whole "body positively" thing, the idea behind it is not supposed to be 'you are beautiful' or 'this is fine'. It's supposed to be more about the fact fat people should be allowed to exist without comment or justification. There are so many ways people are unhealthy, but it's only weight that gets the stigma. People who are overweight shouldn't have to justify their life choices or the way they look all the time? The reason it presents as "you are beautiful" is because of how often fat people are told that they should feel bad because of how they make people uncomfortable whe they look at them.
@dnfi5480
@dnfi5480 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, and there are harmful stereotypes about overweight people being lazy or lacking ambition and so on. However, while it might have started as a way to counter all of this, it now often spills over into glamorizing obesity. I think the drive to stop portraying heavier people as not attractive, not sexy, is very well justified. We all have different tastes and we do not all come in one size. But beyond that, there are medical facts about how our bodies work and the fact is obesity is one of the major drivers of morbidity in the west. There is a clear proven correlation between serious chronic diseases and major causes of death and obesity and that stands true regardless of whether or not you think heavier women are beautiful (I think they definitely are). It's not the only unhealthy thing you can do, sure, people starve themselves, people still OD, people still smoke, but all of that is also not seen in a good light either. Imagine Taylor Swift coming on stage and smoking and saying lung cancer doesn't concern her because she is fit. Imagine then people going "she looks beautiful smoking, leave her alone". If you are Jane on a bus, sure, don't need to justify anything to anyone. But when you are a public figure, when you have a platform that matters, and you are obese, you are emaciated, you trip and slur your speech on stage, you have any type of health issue, you can no longer just brush it away and act like the only problem is with the people not feeling comfortable watching you.
@moonlady3000
@moonlady3000 4 жыл бұрын
@@dnfi5480 Except I wasn't talking about public figures. I was talking about just an average person. They are not "glorifying obesity" by refusing to put on a display of being depressed and unhappy with themselves because of their size or weight. And while I agree that the body positively movement has morphed into something else, it really did start as "fat people shouldn't have to be depressed because they are fat". And while it has finally waned within the last couple of decades, smoking has been considered to be a really sexy and cool aesthetic for ages. And anorexia for a brief period of time was as well. And rock stars doing hard drugs and etc.... Many unhealthy behaviors and vices have been upheld and glorified. I'm not saying that this is something to aspire to, but fighting back so hard against it being obesity's turn is an obvious double standard based on what society thinks of fat people and has very little to do with the fact that it's unhealthy.

YES! Body positivity is about recognizing that a person's worth is not defined by their size OR their health. Fat and disabled (often forgotten about in this type of discussion) people saying " I am beautiful" and being unapologetic about it are reclaiming their worth.

exactly ! it's just a way to say that just because people don't look like the normalized attractive body type in your culture, it doesn't mean that you're not worthy of existing and being happy. honestly, bigger people can be in perfect health and smaller people can be in shitty health for example. as long as you can get regular health checkups, your size or disability doesn't matter much. drink enough water, avoid fats and salts, try to eat fruits and vegetables and get yearly heath checkups and that's it. so yeah, no matter your health, as long as you can function in your body, you're still a living being who deserves to be, if not happy, at least considered as a human being.

Basically not completely aesthetics or the scale. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks and I've been watching The Body Project here on YT which really has motivated me. I take breaks when I need to and don't over do it because if I do I usually quit. So if my thighs really hurt maybe I'll do my arms and upper body that day for example.

I had food addictions for several years. It really is the same as any addiction. You use it to mask whatever negative feelings you have. I suffer from PTSD/depression/anxiety and used fast food as my "drug of choice". I gained so much weight and now am diabetic... but... I have recently curbed the addictions and am slowly regaining my health. I hit a low point last year where I just felt pain in every muscle. I couldn't move. Enough was enough. I now eat plant-based and am exercising. I have a long way to go, but at least I'm going. I'm 44 and I feel like I have a second chance at life. ✊🏻

In college I took a class called "Personal Fitness and Wellness For Life." If anyone is in need of elective credit and their college offers something similar I highly recommend it. We were taught how to use the school gym equiptment, the problem with a lot of fad diets, the benefits of cardio vs. weights, and how to tailor things for yourself so it's actually effective and proper. I think the best thing it got me to do was pay attention to my heart-rate while exercising. My weight doesn't fluctuate much, I can sit on the couch all day or go to the gym five times a week and I look basically the same, and it can feel like nothings changing. But, my heart rate does change, so I know it's not pointless.
