The biggest problem with the sounder is the gross lack of service. For example, weekend service is non existent. And the train is really only geared towards people going to Seattle in the morning and leaving in the evening.
@TheCriminalViolin4 жыл бұрын
But does it run only 6 times a day (counting both directions end to end as one single trip), three in the morning rush, three in the evening rush? If so, then it's already likely more successful than down here with TriMet's WES, lol. More frequent, and then it's far more useful than WES.

_"And the train is really only geared towards people going to Seattle in the morning and leaving in the evening."_ That will be why it's called a commuter service then :)
@nicholasmahoney56534 жыл бұрын
David Gregory well true it works for your 9-5 worker who goes from south of Seattle to the city. For them it works perfectly. However it does not work for the person who is trying to get to Tacoma (Seattle’s sister city) from an area north of there. It does not work for the person trying to get to JBLM either. After using services like (for example) the LIRR, the sounder leaves much to be desired. It could be so much better, but it doesn’t get that kind of attention. It also does not work well for the commuter going into Seattle from the north.
@TheCriminalViolin4 жыл бұрын
@@pook2830 Though logistically, shouldn't be able to be called Commuter Service with limited service. True Commuter Service systems run frequently, not just for the rush hour traffic. A Consistent service that runs throughout the day that works for most if not everyone who relies on the system to commute. Technically speaking, any form of transit can be considered and referred to as commuter since, the reliant and regular ridership of a public transit system are the largest form of commuters in the country. So there is a dire needed for a far more specific and specialized use & definition of the term "Commuter Service" in the end. Preferably, in the way I explained it to be logistically. Common sense would then further this by rebranding/naming/defining how we refer to limited service systems and routes, like this one of Sound Transit in example, as "Limited Service" and "Limited Service Routes" or "Limited Service Transit" where applicable. As a reliant rider myself, and a lifelong diehard mass transit fanatic & geek, it always kills me inside when routes like this one are touted as "Commuter" and quality when they're so limited and thus only work for a very specific demographic of commuters, ones especially as small as the 9-5 rush hour commuters who actually still use transit to get around in the first place rather than personal vehicles.
@zhongniu96994 жыл бұрын
Sound Transit, the operator of Sounder did explain this. The entire track is owned by BNSF Railway, so adding any more service requires permission from them. In fact Sound Transit gradually added several more trips in the past 20 years, but unfortunately these tracks are already filled with freight trains and reached their maximum capacity. Sound Transit does consider building their own tracks, but this would be a tough job. The freeways are badly jammed in Seattle region, so a frequent, reliable rail network should be very favorable. However, Sound Transit bets more on a regional light rail system than Sounder commuter rails, in 2030, there will be a new light rail runs between Seattle and Tacoma every 10-20 mins .
@awdrifter33943 жыл бұрын
Double decker trains always makes sense to me. You don't need a long train to carry that much passenger. For buses, double decker buses sometimes have problem with bridge clearance, but for trains, the freight train already commonly have 2 container stacked, so as long as the passenger train is that same height, it should clear most bridges and tunnels for trains.
@IndustrialParrot2816 Жыл бұрын
Interestingly the double stacked container trains are much taller about 20.25 feet tall whereas most passenger trains are only 15 feet tall

If sound transit ever passes another big package, like ST3, they should see about track capacity upgrades The SPIRE plan I’ve seen before by grassroots advocates proposes constructing brand new tracks alongside the parallel UP right of way which passes through more greenfield with available room for expansion. Coupled with reconstructing some at grade spurs to serve the warehouses from the UP line it proposes that these tracks could be given to BNSF in exchange for the their tracks shifting the freight mainline away from the towns but still with access to warehouses and providing sound transit with passenger only tracks through the center of towns Right now it might just be a pipe dream but hopefully at some point it gains steam

Sounder's interesting because, while it's a Sound Transit service, it's actually operated directly by BNSF. That's why BNSF police is listed on the inside. I quite like the Sounder myself and I'm glad you had a nice experience. As someone who rides it occasionally, my two biggest points of improvement are legroom (since all seats face each other, it's impossible to stretch out your legs when the train is full; I think some rotating seats would be helpful in solving this) and the coverage of the service (Sounder would probably attract more riders it could go a little further south [Lacey-Olympia] and north [Mount Vernon or Bellingham] as an RER-style service, rather than the two separate Seattle-oriented commuter lines as it is now).

Just like I did on your TRE Video, I would like to give you an overview of all the units you saw. 901 is Sounder's very first locomotive. It made a unique presence down in Southern California back in the 2000s when it was leased to Metrolink, who fitted it with a backup P2 Horn. After it was returned to Sounder, you could sometimes still hear that P2 along with the K5LA. But later on, it was overhauled and upgraded to Tier 3, making it what it is today. In this rebuild, it lost the P2. 906, there isn't really much to say that you didn't already say or I already said about 901. It was built in 2000 and within recent years, was rebuilt to Tier 3. It really shouldn't be here, though. Sounder has been really stupid with social distancing. They think they can allow better social distance for the crew by using an extra engine, but really, they've already banned access to the Cab Car on point (which is why you couldn't enter 324). All they're doing is wasting fuel and being bad for the environment. 324 is a 2017-built Bombardier Bi-Level Crash Energy Management Cab Car. Don't get me wrong. They are 100% Satanic. They basically took every last good thing out of the old design and then called that the new design, and they were created purely out of jealousy (if you know their history). Not to mention, they have pretty much the WORST horns in all of existence. And heads up, they don't have comfy interiors. Hopefully all these New Cabs are sent off for scrap and the Old ones all return to their rightful place on point. 101 is a 1999-built "Old" Bombardier Bi-Level Cab Car. Basically, it's 100% Angelic. The exact opposite of that New Cab Car. It was Sounder's very first Cab Car, and was the first Bombardier Cab ever built with welded sides (earlier ones had bolted sides). Like how 901 was leased to Metrolink, 101 was once leased to Virginia Railway Express. Nowadays, getting any Old Cab Car on the point of a train is EXTREMELY rare. If you do ever see one leading, be sure to cherish it. 214 is an average 2000-built coach. That's it. 406 is a coach from 2003. All the cars from this order were specifically built as a replacement for a handful of cars that were ordered a bit prior, but retired before ever entering service. 406 specifically replaced a car which was to be numbered 224. Now for your Amtrak info, as I can provide some on that too: 1403 is a 2017-built Siemens SC-44 Charger. I've mostly gotten used to to these awkward German stand-outs, but I still think they could use a better paint scheme. The Talgo Set you saw is an old Series 6 Trainset, built with Tailfins to accommodate NPCUs and now-retired Amtrak F59PHIs. All of these sets have now been retired, and replaced by the hideous Series 8 sets. 90340 is an NPCU (Non-Power Control Unit) built out of an F40PH. It basically serves as a Cab Car. It was originally Amtrak 340, just they stuck the "90" in front of it to clarify it is now an NPCU. Although the Series 6 sets were retired, you may still find an NPCU on a set of Horizon Coaches. We then see fellow NPCU 90252, Ex-Amtrak 252. This unit is very special among the fleet, as rather than having a dull, common EMD Steel-Cast Mechanical Bell, it has a rare, amazing sounding Bronze Bell. Behind it, is 90230, one of two Cascades NPCUs (the other being 90251) that has been modified with a roll-up baggage door on the side, allowing it to double as a Baggage Car. Such NPCUs are cleverly called "Cabbage". Lastly, we see 77 and 17. Two common P42DCs. Knowing the fleet pretty well, both of these are weaker, lackluster units. There are many, much better P42s out there. I myself will actually be going to Seattle soon, so I will be able to see these myself. My prime targets are to find an Old Sounder Cab Car (any one) on point, and to find 90252. Wish me luck!

4:54 "They vastly outnumber passenger trains here." *Insert BetterTwitchTV FeelsBadMan emote here* And from what I'm able to gather, Amtrak's still wanting to reduce that number even more, all for the sake of saving money. Seems Richard Anderson's gonna push that until the day his replacement, William "Bill" Flynn, is ready to fully take over. Let's pray and hope Amtrak gets the funding it so *DESPERATELY* needs and keeps all of it's services, and eventually becomes so successful that it's privatized completely with federal funding only being received in times of great need or when an expansion project is deemed nationally important or something like that. Edit: Oh that 710 sounded *BEAUTIFUL* in that last shot. You can definitely tell that it's the direct descendant of the oh so successful and railfan favorite 645.

Wow, I've never ridden these bi-levels but every video I watch, yeah I agree, they're excellent commuter railcars. Not that the U.S. has a lot of electrified lines - it should - but Bombardier should make EMU versions of these. Make it work like the Stadler Kiss, with some powered cars and some unpowered. That way agencies only need to buy powered cars and don't have to replace their entire fleet at once.

Google Maps ("directions") has been excellent for helping me get around the Seattle-Tacoma metro area on public transit. For anyone looking at the Vancouver-Seattle Amtrak, Wow!, you might be doing well if you average 35 mph... There's light rail service that goes from roughly the same location (the station is just a block away) down to Tukwila, Sea-Tac and a few stops beyond, and also north to University of Washington (soon to be adding service to Northgate, Bellevue and Redmond, and eventually to Lynnwood.). The Sounder train serves mostly the "long haul" commuters further south in Kent, Auburn, Sumner, Puyallup and Tacoma where light rail isn't going to reach any time soon.

Hi, how familiar are you with Mike Armstrong? You do your videos like how Dylan Bowes does his.

i knew i wasn’t crazy when i first saw the sounder trains and how similar they were to the GO trains back in Toronto lol. except the GO trains in Canada go all over the country not like the Sounder only to nearby cities

Merci beaucoup pour ce video (desole, mon clavier n'a pas les accents). Ca me rappelle les wagons de la ligne regionale EXO-5 (Montreal-Mascouche), bien que ces derniers semblent beaucoup plus recents que ceux de Seattle.

The cost is really the draw of commuter trains in the US. They’re a cheap and sometimes faster way to get from the big city to a suburb or vice versa

The costs of commuter trains outside of the NYC area surprise me. $2 is a steal! The metro system in NYC (we call it the subway) costs $2.75. Meanwhile, for two of the three commuter systems, LIRR and Metro-North, the cheapest ticket is around $8, not counting limited discounts that make it cost $5 (I don't know how much New Jersey Transit costs). It gets a lot more expensive the further away you go. Which is too bad. The cheapest transit is where the most expensive housing is, and that's where the neighborhoods are more walkable so you don't have to drive everywhere. You gotta pick your poison.
