It's crazy just how much Minecraft parallels real life technological advancements. Years ago, upon the advent of redstone, people started creating basic machines and games, such as the Game of Life (saw it years ago before even biomes were introduced), and then pistons were added, increasing what we were capable of. Piston doors, conveyor belts, hidden crafting benches. And now, ten years later, people are still finding ways to further the technological advancements. Huge item sorting systems, many different kinds of plant and mob farms, and now we are on the cusp of portal mechanics I'm sure the developers hadn't even thought of. It's truly amazing how human ingenuity just... creates.

Well, we always have. The Sci-craft and Prototech servers have been using redstone chunk loading and portal mechanics for years, they just aren’t popular enough for many people to know about these mechanics. Unfortunately, 1.13 severely broke these mechanics, with 1.14 only bringing back one - the portal chunk loading. Yes, this did exist in 1.12, but not enough people knew.

Unfortunately no, mob spawning is controlled by player position. So are random ticks, they are also controlled by player position, not chunk loading. After code-digging from the truly technical minecrafters (on Sci-craft and Prototech) it was found that when it comes to these two mechanics, chunk loading doesn’t really affect them, only the player.

Your last example turns out to be just what I might need for a large public server. I am planning a labyrinth, "monty haul" dungeon crawl, that would allow new players to acquire half way decent starter gear. It will feature lots of hidden rooms and passages, controlled wandering monsters as well as 'room' monsters guarding treasure chests. Till now I was planning on just having a big mob spawner above the whole contraption with strategic drop zones to hopefully put the correct number of mobs into the room at the right pace. (Creepers would be filtered out by cats tethered nearby.) I may have to rethink that and use your idea to channel in specific types and quantities on command. It will be a lot more complex than my brain can usually handle, but I am hoping that smarter people than me will be around to help with this community project. Liked and subbed.

you can make a two way portal on the ceiling if you break 4 bedrock in the right location (under the 4 broken bedrock need to be 2 more naturally missing bedrock to complete the portal) the game checks for portal blocks up to y=127, so having a portal block in the top bedrock layer will work in both directions. keep in mind that it has to be a portal block, not obsidian.

@drkastenbrot

@@gaunt6592 using headless pistons. Its a complex exploit to perform but it still works. There is tutorials on youtube. You need about 10-20 minutes, 2-3 tnt minecarts and one piston per bedrock block as well as a fair bit of reusable redstone. There is ways to do this with normal tnt instead of the minecarts but I dont thing anyone has made a tutorial yet. For getting through bedrock, an enderpearl and a ladder is all you need, dont waste your time using minecarts.

i actually found an obsidian duping method with this. 1. place TNT in the nether. 2. ignite the TNT and go back into the overworld before it blows up 3: toss something into the portal 4: wait for the TNT to blow up 5: go back in, and there will be a whole new portal built for you along with your old portal, meaning you got free obsidian.

Whats cool about that trap is now theres a way to stop people from portal hopping. Just like my friends and I did with minecraft. We used to play on survival servers going through portals and sucking up base loot. They called us the portal troopers. Because we could end up in your nether portal instantly or near your base using portals to get inside. Its a very good strategy. But now theres a counter for it. Interesting.
