Symmetry vs Asymmetry is not really a Minecraft debate, it’s more of just a debate in art in general

It's a classic instance of the slippery slope fallacy on top of that. Adding vertical slabs has nothing to do with adding quarter blocks.

While I'd personally be a fan of quarter-blocks (imho essentially just sound like offset, unpressable buttons with more texture variety. We already use buttons for decoration, they just wouldn't be in the middle anymore. Truly revolutionary, right?), I really don't get how the slippery slope argument is supposed to work _for_ them. To me, it makes more sense as an argument against them. Quarter blocks are an entirely different category of block, half blocks aren't. Stopping after finishing the half-block variety makes way more sense than stopping after adding only one kind of half-block.

I actually play MP with "keep inventory", not because I would not like the idea of a challenge, but because despite knowing almost everything about Minecraft, I have only 100 or so hours in all my survival worlds combined. And when I started playing with my friends, who were already walking around in diamond armour while I was busy spamming chat with my death messages and sweating to get some iron, it was really pressurizing trying to keep up with their pace. And it's not like I would be more reckless now that I don't lose the stuff, I just learn from my mistakes and gain gaming experience without having to start over every half an hour. The feature is especially useful when you play on a laggy server run on your friend's computer and literally have almost no time to re-grind your gear because of your graduation exams.

I mainly use Keep Inventory because playing Minecraft without some form of fast travel is kind of a nightmare. I'd rather not waste so much time just walking back and forth between places. If I'm thousands of blocks from home, I want to be able to just go home without trekking all the way back... That's just twice as much time spent than just being able to die and return home instantly. (And before anyone says that fast travel is too easy... Minecraft is a game. Its supposed to be _fun._ If I wanted to travel somewhere and then spend a long time going back the way I came, I would just go on a car trip).

As a bedrock boi, I can say that you do not NEED to pay for skins, maps, etc. On PC, Pocket and Console, you can go to a browser and type in ''Parkour map'' or something. MCPEDL is a great place for this. Also, the payments supports both MicroJang and the creator of the map, for example Noxcrew, Hive, Lifeboat, Cubecraft, Jigarbov, etc. Finally, you can have an infinite amount of Minecraft accounts off of one purchase so paying to change your name is kinda needless

The "against" argument about vertical slabs can be defeated with one sentance: vertical slabs is just another blockstate of slabs. We have stairs in all the configuration and no one complains about simplicity. Why slabs are half done? Quater blocks is too much and it is ADDING, while half slabs is COMPLETING. There shouldn't even be "vertical slabs", there should just be slabs with blockstates that include vertical configuration. EDIT: yes, I forgot that we are missing side-ways stairs too. Also, holy shit this conversion this goes on in replies.

adding something about the automation debate on "For" look at games like factorio and satisfactory, they're ALL about automation, yet they never feel stale or repetitive, you can always pump up efficiency and you always need more materials. I believe that minecraft in it's current state can't be easily made to automate everything, however if there are items with high amount of resource consumptions and if the default efficiency for farming is really low and requires a lot of effort to improve it significantly, then I can see full automation minecraft be a thing. without high consumption items AND with easy effective solutions for farming everything, the game will be indeed feel repetitive and stalling.

Losing all your items in Terraria is a LOT worse than losing them in Minecraft. Many Minecraft players have a full set of backup gear, and preparing that kind of thing is much harder in Terraria. Not only that, Terraria environments are a lot more hostile, meaning it’s extremely hard to get the items back, unlike in Minecraft, where if you have decent parkour skill and can run fast, you can simply dash to your point of death, grab your stuff, and get the hell out. In Terraria, there’s a lot more obstacles and enemies between you and your lost items, so much so that it’s the entire reason nobody plays mediumcore.

I think the entire building system surrounding rotatable blocks needs to be revamped, this could also make vertical slabs possible without making a whole new block. Essentially my idea is when you're hovering over where a rotatable block can be placed a transparent outline of that block will appear in the orientation it will be placed in, pressing a certain key will rotate that block either on its X or Y axis, allowing for easier and more accurate placement to be done. This feature could also be toggleable in options if someone wanted to use the classic building system, I just get annoyed when I'm trying to place stairs quickly and they keep wanting to switch their direction and then I have to break them and place them back.

For me, it's not "Symmetrical vs Asymmetrical" but rather a combination of both. When I'm building, I tend to do something along the lines of 75% symmetrical and 25% asymmetrical. For example, if I'm making a house, the walls, windows, and beams will all be symmetrical, but the decorations, flowers, shrubbery, and things like that will be asymmetrical. This makes for a balanced creation that's still interesting to look at. I tend to do the same thing when building underground - each room will be pretty much symmetrical, but the main hub is typically ad-hoc and asymmetrical.

@DreableNeebal10 3 жыл бұрын
@@vaporre6424 Even by size, it's an eighth. Minecraft blocks are 1m^3. 1m x 1m x 1m = 1m^3. Put more simply, just imagine the "quarter cube" and think about how many you'd have to stack to make the shape of the normal cube. If you put 4 together on the ground, you'd just have a slab. You need 8 to make the cube. The faces of the cube would be 1/4th the area of the faces of the normal cube though.

I feel like a lot of these miss the most important points on both sides. Like with Java vs. Bedrock, most people aren't really putting emphasis on "Java is the original and therefore better" which was the entire argument you presented; there are a lot of very significant differences in gameplay, especially with redstone, which works completely differently in Java and Bedrock.
@Nugcon
@Nugcon 3 жыл бұрын
He didn't really represent the Java argument that well, possibly so he can keep the video at a reasonable length. But pretty much his argument is that "Java is better because it's the original, nostalgia moment because we're all boomers lol, also mods". As a player that played Pocket Edition for 3 years before switching, I could still confidently say that I think Java is better. Unless Bedrock can fix its redstone, clunky inventory system, laggy servers, tons of bugs, stuff bedrock community is probably so tired of by now, then maybe I'll consider. But then there is also the stuff that isn't just gonna be fixed by applying an update. Java has birthed so many communities and servers that you really can't see in bedrock. Hypixel, the largest Minecraft server operates exclusively in Java, the community is so large it even has it's own news channel on KZbin, It is pretty much what defines the "minigame community". Other communities like Anarchy servers or Competitive PVP are in Java, and while yes these servers do exist in Bedrock, they mostly serve as substitute for Java servers. My enjoyment of Minecraft mostly comes from its community and I think Java has done such a better job on that. also java banners on shields

Simple answer: Yes, we need vertical slabs Long answer: Correct, Minecraft is in dire need of vertical slabs of all species.
@capnlatenight5356
@capnlatenight5356 3 жыл бұрын
The reason we don't have vertical slabs is because the placement is too hard. Horizontal slabs exist on the top half of a block or the bottom half. No exceptions. Vertical slabs have 4 possible positions on one block because of the different edges on top of the block. Followed by the 4 that could exist under the block, and 4 on the faces of the block. That's 12 different configurations for a single block.

@@capnlatenight5356 Vertical slabs as a concept have existed in mods as an intuitive concept for literally years. It's actually trivially easy to do; just pay attention to where the player is aiming on the surface. If they're aiming at the middle, place the slab parallel to the surface. If they're aiming at an edge of the surface, place the slab perpendicular to it, on that side of the block. Very simple, very intuitive.

Why would it create a legal mess? If the mod belongs to the devs, and the devs are working for mojang, then they should just be able to give their consent for it to be added. If it belongs to mojang and not the devs, then it should be able to be added no issue what so ever. Then again it won't be added anyways so eh. However I do agree that minecraft vanilla needs a new dimension.

1: For: The Aether, whilst originally a mod, could still have modded elements even after being added. Though my argument lies in the idea that it's been a handful of years since a new realm was added, and I'm not going to say we always need a new realm, however, the Overworld serves as an appropriate dimension for Earth, the Nether serves as an appropriate dimension for Hell, and the End as an appropriate dimension for the End of Time, so to speak. What we don't have is an appropriate dimension to represent Heaven in some way, which always seemed odd to me in the perspective of Dimensions in the game, and true to form, Mojang at some point did try an experiment with "sky islands", so it wouldn't be too out there to think about adding. (This would also ensure that the dimension is constantly updated with the rest of the game and not out of date waiting for the modder to finally getting around to updating and fixing the mod) 2: Indifferent: Yes having movable spawners would be neat, especially when you don't often find them, and getting to them is a pain. But I've never really cared to use them all that much myself anyway, so it is whatever. 3: Indifferent: While I often try to build things as symmetrical as possible, I do quite often like to build asymmetrically to offset the build design ad create something unique. 4: ?: This is an argument people have? 5: Indifferent: I play both, for different reasons, but I'm never thinking to myself, except jokingly, that either are superior over the other. 6: For: This is one I wholeheartedly am for. Mostly for decorative purposes obviously, but also because we haven't seen a new way blocks could be used in almost a decade... Slabs and stairs were highly influential, and opened a lot of creative doors that were originally only accessable via mods. And because of such ideas being opened so long ago, I feel, it is only natural that now, we get an improvement on such building systems and techniques. While the argument that then people would want corner blocks and corner/sideways corner posts are true, I don't think those would or should be added untill maybe another decade, give or take, passes. (There's quite possibly an indie game that could overthrow Minecraft at some point, because it will have features that Minecraft itself lacks. As it stands imo, Minecraft is still a fun and enjoyable game to play, but what was once leading the charge is now playing catch up.) 7: Indifferent: People pronounce words differently, all languages do, and have their own ticks and ways to pronounce words. 8: Against: Whilst everything being farmable would be nice, it does eliminate the need for going out and exploring. Whilst I do think there are ways to mitigate how much could be farmed, I think everything being farmable removes the true intention behind playing Minecraft and only creates lazy and unintelligent players who stop coming up with unique ways to conquer dangerous or mildly infuriating obstacles, because they can just have it at their fingertips. 9: Indifferent: Building underground Bases are just as much about keeping safe as building Bases above ground, and building small shelters in a mine always means you'll have a safe space to escape to. Bu~ut I don't think either one is better than the other, only personal preference, and attachment to the current build you have. 10: Indifferent: As long as it's not Perma-Death, losing items will be frustrating, but there's always a way to re-obtain the lost objects, it might just take a long time, and I know I've rage quited a few times after dying with epic amounts of loot before. So while it might be a cowards way out, I don't think it's necessarily cheating, sometimes you just want to mess around, and not having the pressure of losing all those emeralds or epic armor you made is nice at keeping stress levels down.

While I'm against keeping inventory, I am for changing the rules to fit how you want to play. An example that I do in almost every "survival" world is using command blocks to increase the day/night cycle. By turning off command block output, daylight cycle, and using a repeating command block, you can make the days as long or as short as you want. I go for a 45 minute day and a 45 minute night and it, somehow, makes the game feel so much different. It not only comes down to the ambient lighting and how the night clouds appear orange from the sunset for longer than you think, but it makes the world feel more substantial in a way. It's noticeable when exploring, since you travel further without seeing night or having to place down a bed, but you also don't feel like you're actually traveling that far and it somehow makes your radius of what you consider familiar or "close by" much wider. Why there isn't a slider to adjust day/night speed isn't in in the vanilla game is something I don't fully understand, but I'm okay with knowing I'm not playing true survival if it means experiencing the familiar in a way that feels new.

My personal takes on each one: 1. Aether - I've got mixed feelings on the idea of vanilla Aether. I appreciate it for what a big mod it was in its time, but I also feel it's a bit overrated, especially considering the other kinds of dimension mods that've been made since. _However,_ I do think almost any other kind of sky dimension, not just the Aether, would be nice to have, because I really hate how punishing The End is with its terrain. At least with the Aether if y'fell off y'had a chance of survival, and even if you made friends with solid ground you could meander back to your stuff 2. Moveable Spawners - Absolutely for this. I seem to have abysmal dungeon finding luck as is, if I find one I should be able to haul the spawner home make my basement a Spider jamboree if I so desire 3. Symmetry vs Asymmetry - I don't know if my autism has anything to do with it, but I *vastly* prefer symmetry. But that said, I do also prefer things that are meant to look natural to be asymmetrical, as you don't often see symmetry in nature. Which is why it kills me whenever I see you, Grian, or anyone be able to do random block placement [of sorts] for natural decoration and make it look coherent while also managing to avoid falling into symmetry bias 4. Diamonds Near Gravel - This is honestly the first I'm hearing of such a debate, and it honestly feels more like a conspiracy. Of course, unlike many conspiracies, this one actually has a fair bit of reasoning to it 5. Java vs Bedrock - Bedrock has never not done me dirty. The off-hand is basically useless, there's no option to make your main hand be on the left, Redstone is ironically jank by fixing quasi-connectivity, and the UI can be an absolute eyesore at times. And that's not even mentioning the mobile game-tier trash that is the Marketplace. I generally don't touch my PC these days because I get so much milage out of my Switch [and also I have lackluster wifi in my room, so not very good for playing TF2], but I've had so many bad experiences with Bedrock on Switch that I continue to stick exclusively to Java 6. Vertical Slabs - I'm not much of a builder, so whether or not they exist doesn't really affect me. Though I absolutely hate how one of Mojang's excuses for not adding them is they would "limit creativity," which is such a stupid claim that I want them out of spite 7. Mojang vs Moyang - Honestly, I say "Moyang" simply because it rolls off the tongue better 8. Automation - I don't really have strong feelings one way or the other. I can see the point that it'd be much easier to get bored if you never have to work for your stuff, but in my case I have the attention span of a chicken, because even without any kinds of farms I get tired of a world really easily and go on to make a new one. And it's not even exclusive to Minecraft, of the probably almost 100 Pokemon randomizers I've done, I have not completed a single one 9. Underground Bases vs Surface Bases - I kind of accidentally do a lot of the former, or rather a lot of my base and the time I spend in it is underground, and it boils down to the fact that it's way easier to branch out underground than it is above ground, and it also doesn't help that you're usually using up way more resources to expand above ground than the resources you use up expanding underground 10. /keepInventory true - I mean, yeah, I'm not gonna deny that it removes challenge and the main punishment death is supposed to provide. *But!* I am an absolute pansy who likes clinging onto his garbage, and will pretty much always have this and /mobGriefing false on if I can help it

I agree a lot with mojang in that adding vertical slabs would limit creativity minecraft is about a blocky world were you can build things using cubes half slabs and since you are limited to those forms you have to think about your build to consider (would this look nice with those half slabs or do i just use normal blocks) and those thoutghs keep the player engadged, thinking and sure made me play the game for a long time thinking about my builds By adding verticals slabs you would erase this thoutgh process and the player would just think instead: if i want some horizontal variation i use horizontal slabs and if i want vertical i use vertical slabs and that takes away the planning the testing and just makes it so you can do builds without worrying about the builds integrity Its by adding a limitation that the player learns to overcome the problem and achieve his desires without a limit to how you can place and variate blocks it takes away some of the skill in building And you may say but isnt minecraft a game about making whatever you want and for me the answer is not in that way because you can change anything in minecraft within the rules of the game if you want to play a game with basically no limits in what you can create go play roblox the problem you may find is that when you are building something in roblox you need to already have a goal and inspiration, minecraft encourages building in survival to protect you from mobs and organize resources to accelerate progress wich encourages you to think of how your base is going to look so its visually appeling to the eye, what will be its shape so it can contain what you want in it and from there you have to think of block placement and where do you want to place slabs instead of full blocks and by having to think of that building in minecraft becomes fun and challeging because you are forced to work around your limitations By adding vertical slabs you remove some of the challeging of block placing and in consequence minecraft building wich runs into the problem of building things on roblox while you can build fun things the building process becomes stale and that makes players prefer to just play other persons maps instead of creating their own Btw sorry for the wall of text i wrote on why i think vertical slabs would be a bad addition but i hope you understand my point

A diamond shovel will always mine faster through dirt and gravel than a pickaxe can mine through stone, thus by default, finding a dirt/gravel patch is like finding an open air cavern. Also consider Mojang's logic against vertical slabs: they say it would inhibit natural creativity or it can already be done in other ways. But yet it would in no way inhibit natural creativity, if anything it would bring about so much more creativity! Roofs with proper angles would be possible! Castle walls with thinner battlements! Actual thin walls! It would revolutionize building! But what block do we have that's similar to a vertical slab? Walls? Trapdoors? Neither of those function in the way a vertical slab should. Walls are in the middle of the block, and trapdoors are far too thin and serve a very specific use. (also on a server some punk could waltz over and flip all the trapdoors) Also, Mojang said on the previously considered suggestions page that anything that can already be done in other ways are NOT being considered, like furniture! But chains exist now! Chains could already be done with iron bars or grindstones, and yet now we have them!

The slippery slope argument is by far the most credible argument against vertical slabs, and even that one isn't perfect because there are way more people who want vertical slabs than people who want micro blocks. I think the vast majority of the MC community would gladly accept vertical slabs with the knowledge that micro blocks would forever stay a modded feature. A lot of people have _already_ accepted that possibility. By comparison, Mojang's "inhibiting creativity" argument is just plain stupid and makes no sense. I should also say that I myself don't want real furniture items like true tables and chairs, but I do want the option to sit or lie down on any block so that we could continue building our own furniture while also being able to actually use them as furniture.

However, I hollowed out that entire mountain. Underground, I kept all the less pretty things that wouldn't fit up in my spire, like farms, storage systems, and the like. My take on vertical slabs: Helps with building by expanding what you can do. Making uneven door designs could look really cool, it doesn't limit creativity, it gives more options (we already have a lot, but this is one that is visibly within reach). For anyone else that isn't really focused on building, having such wouldn't make much difference really. Also I've seen some people saying that it would break textures. If that was a problem, then slabs would also break said textures. You can just do what you do with slabs, but instead of taking half of the texture in the horizontal, you do it for the vertical. Look at Forge Multipart. You got it there

I think they should make something like Chisel and Bits a part of vanilla. For those who don't know what it does, it allows for blocks only 1 pixel in size to placed and removed. Which is very helpful for detail and design. (Just try the mod because it isn't too easy to explain). I know why Mojang won't add them because it "ruins creativity". In a way, Mojang is correct. And also incorrect. 1. It somewhat depletes creativity. Having to use what we got for small details (or major ones) could be creative as you can't just go around and make a city using 1 pixel-sized blocks. 2. It also helps creativity. Being able to use 1 pixel-sized, 1/8th-sized and 1/4th sized blocks would allow for alot more detail and improvements. You could build an entire house within just a single block or make an extremely detailed house with small vines and triangular roofs. This allows for unique shapes, so this kind of feature would benefit. 3. If Mojang does and doesn't players to use this kind of thing. There should be some configuration to this. If players want something more but not too much. They could make it so only vertical stairs and slabs can be used but nothing like pixel-sized blocks. Too Long, Didn't Read: Small blocks with configuration should exist.

I see where you come from, but I would like to add a few things. Just like when a writer writes a book, a builder builds a building. The writer has 100% freedom of what to write, and therefore spends most of the time rewriting every line to perfection, which takes months of work. The builder does not have the 100% freedom, that the writer has, and will not spend quite as long on building. However, if the builder used Chisel and Bits, they would begin to carefully remake every bit of every block, which would also take months of work. The final build would be stunning, but at some point the amount of work overshadows the finished result. I'm not saying that some builds do not already take months of work, just that with the chisels and bits it would take considerably longer, and with details you would only see if you really looked hard enough. Some builders could master the use of chisels and bits, and create masterpieces, but (if it be like with the writers) those that do not put in the amount of work to use them will be heavily criticized. New writers usually have a hard time getting into writing, due to the amount of work and pressure they'd have to go through. I don't want new builders looking at all the different bits and pieces and be discouraged by the amount of work it would take to just make a simple house. While I would love to be able to make a replica of my actual face in minecraft from build height to the bottom of the world, down to the 1/512th of a block, i think it would be too much of a downside with the amount of work I'd have to put in. tl:dr - I compare writing a book to building with chisels and bits, talk about makin a realistic face in minecraft, and come to the conclusion that having it implemented would put too much pressure on the builders to create perfection and make builds take 10x as long. Thanks for reading the whole reply.

Debate #3 - Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical building... I generally have a unique approach to my structures that backs up both views. Without overcomplicating too much: I like to build mega-base/mansions that I spend 1/3rd to 2/3rds of my time in depending on what I'm doing. My structures are based on a half-chunk grid (8x8 blocks), with physical blocks surrounding all or most of the grid perimeter, while the inner 6x6 is hollow Air, if not occupied elsewhere... Yes, that means double-layered floors and walls for creeper resistance. It's especially useful if you want to add in more Wood to your build by having a Stone layer behind to prevent fire-spread if something nasty happened. The most incredible feature is that it allows for easy fitting of a full 6-beacon pyramid in a "room", without the grid-pattern ^ exactly above. - Symmetry: My base floors follow the same X-Z format in which I designed the rooms, and stack directly over each other. - Asymmetry: Every floor may differ based on average X-Z area and in a shrinking format which eventually cuts off rooms from existing in higher floors from lower floors, creating the exterior "mansion" look, of course different from typical Woodland Mansion structures.

I think moveable mob spawners would be great, but only if having too many mob spawners next to each other reduced the rate, so that you'd get deminishing returns after 3 or 4 spawners I just want to be able to move my skeleton spawner so I don't have to travel a few hundred blocks every time I need it. It's not like that travel time adds more to the game, I'm not "exploring the world" because of it. It's just a boring commute after a while. Or be able to use a dual spawner without having to get extremely lucky/look up the locations of one and then travel potentially thousands of blocks to get there It can be locked behind some magical silk touch 2 enchantment, or they can only be pushable with pistons for all I care. A good solution to this would actually be the custom terrain settings, that used to be in the game, finally being re-added. Back in 1.12 you could change the likelihood of spawners and other similar stuff. If you felt like it, you could change it so 3-4 dungeons in a single place were pretty likely to happen. More spawners also means more likely to find one near your base(Unless you are playing in a world created before changing the setting). A good example of this is hermitcraft season 4.
@starrysock
@starrysock 3 жыл бұрын
@@RonDe675 Idk, I definitely think dungeons should be more common by default, and more customization options never hurt, but that feels more like a bandaid patch than an actual fix. For one you still wouldn't be guaranteed to find one near where you want to set up your base, and like you said, if your world was generated before that change happened, it wouldn't help you at all And also, if you're already making 2-3-even 4 spawner dungeons common enough to realistically encounter, why not just let players make them themselves? That way where you want to build a base isn't controlled by a couple fancy blocks deep underground if you want to try to keep your farms close by

The debate on symmetry is pointless. Symmetry and asymmetry are forms of art. Symmetry shows structure, it looks planned, it looks mechanical. It is best used on mega structures and big modern bases. Asymmetry is good for harmony. It shows flow, composition, and it allows the artist to use tricks to tell a story. It is best used on terraforming, landscaping, big villages and towns, and immersive custom biomes

when I play on survival, I go with symmetry, because the process of making a good looking build is harder on survival and I would rather repeat the already tried and tested method that I used on the other side of the build than make something new. I also need it to be practical, and usually that means symmetry, and it makes keeping track of the resources I need easier. But on creative mode I go asymmetrical, because unlimited resources is pretty neat, and it's easy to go through multiple iterations of a build really fast until the best one is found. But really both are good if you are able to make it look good.
