@@Archimedes.5000 Sound designers would probably like this though. I can't think of anything that simulates engines for the sole purpose of generating their sounds. Although it wouldn't quite sound like the real thing (then again, recording all the nuances of the real thing is hard considering how loud it all is), what really piques my interest is the sounds of impractical or impossible engines. It's one thing to have a model of a real engine that won't constantly clip your microphones while recording it, but it's another to have a model of an engine that nobody would bother machining or would explode as soon as you turned the throttle too high!
@Archimedes.50002 жыл бұрын
@@alexdandanalex this doesn't simulate the real sound in the slightest, or rather not the sound you would normally hear. All this is useful for is for calculating frequencies of the explosions, but this tool is an overkill for that, and the more important thing when making realistic sounds are the acoustics of the surroundings (what the sound passes through, rather than what produces it)
@The_Mister_E2 жыл бұрын
@@Archimedes.5000 There's cabinet simulations and (most importantly) impulse responses for all sorts of containers. And making an impulse response for... well... anything is just a matter of playing a few sound files inside whatever you're modeling and using microphones to capture what leaks out. Engines are very complex sources of sound, full of moving parts and propulsion. You can model the inside of an engine block and maybe the individual processes of an engine, but you can't really model all the sounds of an engine and how they influence each other without modeling the entire engine.

The clunking idle sound is the characteristic diesel sound when it's not fully warmed up yet, and the fuel mixture doesn't burn uniformly across its volume. Strictly speaking it's not a mechanical noise, and the current simulation won't be able to pull this trick yet, as it only seems to simulate uniform combustion. Probably would be also required to simulate variable geometry "trumpets" intake and a different internal friction coefficient. plus on high performance engines the exhaust system is designed so that the exhaust gasses create a slight depression behind them so that they "pull" the exhaust from otehr cylinders. Really, really awesome work! Well done! Anyway, as a professional audio engineer i can think of some improvements: As far as i can tell, you are only using one sound sample, shaped to liking. Its some noise that you tweaked to fit. You also mentioned that you had to eq the thing in the last video because the sound would otherwise be to muffled (which i still think is the case.) So in order to get it naturally right, i suggest two things: 1. The real sound is a mix from ignition spark, then explosion and then the exhaust gas. Since we have a very high frequency of ignitions, most of the low end from the ignition spark and explosion will be cancelled. But the transients of the initial combustion will give you the top end of frequencies that will make the sound realistic (and probably somewhat brutal). 2. No sound is the same. Our ears do recognize this very quickly and get used to it. We get bored, it sounds artificial. In order to get realism we use a technique called "round robin samples" those are slightly different samples thrown in at random to keep some variation. 3-4 different samples of each sample in the composition will do the trick. (3.Bonus: Different volumes have different resonant sounds, too ;) ) You should think of monetizing this. Its too great of a work to be "just for fun". First thing coming to my mind is BeamNg Drive which would be a blast if this could be implemented. I would love to see this in game. Second thing would be a VST Instrument to plugin to DAWs for realistic engine sounds. A gamechanger for Audio-Engineers working with car sounds from games to movies or sth. Hope you consider pushing this forward, i am stoked! - love, Freddy

Can’t wait to see how far this goes with different valve types, fuel types, and other electronic bits
@shadowboy8132 жыл бұрын
Fuel types won't change the sound of an engine by much. The sound is dictated by pressure pulses from intake and exhaust. In fact, under deceleration, modern cars shut off the injectors. While engine braking, modern engines use no fuel at all.
@nthgth2 жыл бұрын
@@shadowboy813 I thought that, but this simulator shows fuel consumption happening even while coasting. I believe you're right though, and it's just a minor oversight in the code.

I love the sounds of all these engines. As a blind person, the point of watching these videos is hearing the amazing sound these engines make, such as a V 69. That was probably the coolest engine sound I’ve ever heard! Good job on that one! my question is do you know if this engine simulator is Blind accessible? If so, I would really love to get my hands on this and maybe make some interesting modifications just to see how it would affect the sound of the engine. Can’t wait to see what else you do with this amazing technology!

Hello! Glad you enjoy my work. There have been some blind Engine Simulator users in the community Discord. I don't know how the exact techniques that they used but given that Engine Simulator only requires a text editor in order to create engines, I imagine it should be possible. If you join the Discord (the link is in the description) I might be able to find those people and see if they have any suggestions. Thanks for watching!

To make the sound even more real here os my suggestions: •Make the sound stereo/binaural by splitting the L R signals, double them, add a subtle delay, 5ms should do the trick, and play the delayed sound to the opposite side (processed L goes to output R and so on), perhaps with a lower volume and or through some filtering. You can even generalize this for 3D sound and that would be ready for a game. •Add a convolutional reverb, that way you can swap between different rooms and add even more depth to the resulting sound. •Add wind and road sound lol Very cool work, I'm excited to see more of this!

You should add a muffler system that you can physically see reacting to engine vibration and modifying the sound, visual exhaust even going through it could be badass. On a more difficult note, a 2 stroke engine would be mighty impressive.
@yngfljm2277 Жыл бұрын
yes plsss @angethegreat, also if you see this, when you slowed down the animation, are we hearing the explosions or exhaust sound (as in exhaust gasses leaving the combustion chamber), or are they one in the same? I've wanted to know this for years now as I could never quite formulate my question until now. I originally thought of it when I would watch cold-start videos lol and wonder when the rpm is below 1000, you could hear the individual sounds of the engine, but what exactly are we hearing? Thanks I hope I made any sense :(

Amazing work! I'm no engine aficionado, but I instantly recognized the Harley bike. That one sounded great! For part 2, you should consider showing the real-life equivalents before showing the simulated ones. It'd help people like me with less engine knowledge appreciate the accuracy of the simulated sounds more. Anyhow, amazing work, keep it up! People like you are the future.

This is still blowing my mind. I eagerly await any new content you make as I was immediately hooked with the last video. To test the limits of your sim, you should try the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp; a 2000hp, 18-cylinder beast of an engine used in American fighters back in WW2.

The comments I read are entirely accurate! You really do have something here! The reason I'm looking and you have it closer than anyone.... I'm looking for a tuning tool with approximate outputs with given information. I dabbled in programming many many years ago and I KNOW it would be a serious amount of additional programming to get where I want to go. This program/app would be something that would sell to high performance engine shops engine enthusiast and gamers with technical knowledge.
