Simulation of the phagocytosis of beads of different sizes by human neutrophils

Finite-element computer simulations of phagocytosis of antibody-coated beads of three different sizes by human neutrophils. The coloring of the cell interior (legend shown at the left) reflects the relative density of the cytoskeletal actin network. The counter at the upper right gives the elapsed time in seconds. The simulations are followed by the "real thing", i.e., examples of typical experiments (see also • Phagocytosis of beads ... ).
The simulations reproduce our experiments remarkably well (including the phagocytosis timeline, the bead trajectory, the cortical tension, and the distribution of F-actin inside the cells). Moreover, global agreement with all experiments using different bead sizes is achieved with a single set of model parameters. This unparalleled success indicates that our mathematical model has predictive power and indeed captures the dominant mechanisms underlying the physical behavior of neutrophils during phagocytosis.
