This song is in my top 3 all-time. I still remember hearing it for the first time. I woke up to it on a school morning in 1990. I was getting close to my high school graduation. Another guy at school asked if I heard it. We both thought it was amazing. I knew it would be a big #1 hit. It didn't disappoint. 4 weeks at #1, which was huge back then!!! Sinead made it her own!!!

As mentioned, the tears were real. The part about "all the flowers that you planted, mama, in the back yard. All died and went away" made her think of her mother's death in a car accident in 1985. The song is obviously about loss and heartbreak and it makes people cry, she was no exception. Amazing performance. Prince was a genius for writing it, but Sinead's voice brought it to life. Originally she wanted to record the video again because of the tears but she was persuaded to leave it alone.

It's a beautiful song by Prince, but in SInead's hands, it becomes ethereal. I suspect that Prince was a bit unnecessarily jealous of her. Whenever anyone thinks of this song now, it's Sinead's version. A haunting powerhouse of a ballad. Plus, FINALLY, someone at least recognises the teardrop. That was genuine from Sinead, having recently lost her mother. The UK fell in love with her for that and this was at the No. 1 spot for a good number of weeks back in 1990.

If you knew anything about Prince, he was very humble and wouldn't be jealous of another artist's success when using one of his songs, as he wrote many very successful songs for several artists. Prince always treated others with respect unless the other person disrespected him. Fun fact, Prince released an album every year since his first album, and his private catalog of music is so huge they could release an album every year for a century. Price played every instrument on his first album, he was a perfectionist, and loved his fans more than being a huge star. After his falling out with Sony, Prince began holding performances in clubs and other small venues where he could have a more intimate experience with fans.

The part where she cries, is because she's thinking about her mother, you can see it in "I know that living with you, baby, was sometimes hard" is just a little of what Sinéad had to live with her mother, sadly. Much suffering but still she loves and misses her. This is really emotional and give me chills when she starts singing "all the flowers that you planted, mama"

Even though Prince wrote this as a song about a romantic breakup Sinead funneled emotions regarding her relationship to her mother into her version. The combination is electric. For an artist known for her passion and animated energy to be so still it's epic.
@LKre-vi5oq Жыл бұрын
Not quite. He originally wrote this song for his Mom, after his father died. Prince was really worried about his Mom, but yes it morphed into a love song. Sineads' mother, with whom she had a terribly difficult relationship had recently died. Sinead had repeatedly said her version was much more about her Mom. RIP, Sinead.

Prince had originally written it, but Sinead had changed some of the words in the lyrics. Prince was unhappy about that. The song is about loss. Sinead intentionally spoke to the lyric “All the flowers you planted mama, in the back yard. Have all died since you went away” due to Sinead having lost her mother and having a regretful relationship with her mother. I believe the song remained in the top spot on charts for 38 weeks. Still maintaining the longest running number one song.

In all these videos that I can watch there are those like you who are attentive to what is happening who discover admiration the music of their fathers and mothers and I love watching their reactions. And there are those who are too deeply rooted in a certain musical culture who take it down, forgetting that they come from the past. As I always say I love it when young people listen to old man's music.
