Hartigan is probably the best example of a true hero I've ever seen. He has no superpowers, is aged, completely surrounded by immorality and corruption, married, and has a life of his own. Yet never does he once give in. Never does he betray his morality. He risks his life with the knowledge that in the unlikely chance that he survives, he will be ruined for life. He acts with complete selflessness to save Nancy, twice. Considering it to be a fair trade in his life for her's. And when push comes to shove he takes his own life in order to save her's. He sacrifices everything to save one girl. I can't think of a more perfect example of a hero.

I see the things a little bit more darker. You are completely forget he has a caring wife and she's expecting him to come back. Maybe the have children too, that I don't know. They've a life together, not just him alone. When he made his decision to save Nancy 'whatever it takes' that was a selfish move too, not just heroism. He ruined two life to save one. His and his wife too.

I wonder if part of the direction the actors got for this movie was “be deliberately campy”. I’ve seen both these actors give subtle, more naturally flowing performances. It’s like they’re purposefully going for an old noir film style of acting.

I really like this film. But in a movie with dialogue that is sometimes clumsy with exposition, this dialogue between Hartigan and his partner is the clumsiest. And given that this is the opening scene, it really doesn't do the movie any favours in making a good first impression.

The No.1 Guy Lol I'm not saying it's a legitimate flaw I'm just pointing out how there is no other scene in the film with this much exposition. We are straight up told about Hartigan's age, "bum ticker," that Bob is his partner, that Nancy will be the fourth victim by the same rapist. And that's not including everything told in voice over. It's just kind of funny.
