The weirdest thing about that is that Monsanto was using chemicals that caused frog’s hermaphroditic tendencies to kick into overdrive! (Sorry I’m not a scientist I’m an author, LOL!) It’s strange and definitely was just a way for him to scam people into buying his water purifying supplements but still… weird that it wasn’t COMPLETE bullshit. just misrespresented bc of course it was, it’s Alex Jones. As far as I understand frogs are naturally hermaphroditic and it was just causing it to activate at unnatural times or in an unnatural or harmful way. But I’m not sure if I’m correct or not. Alex Jones just doesn’t have eyes on the inside to understand it.

Regarding Djura painting his clothes with ash and that working to guard him in the same way Eileen's plague doctor mask does... it makes sense if you think ash was the thing you traditionally made lye out of! So using ash as a disinfectant is not farfetched at all and lines in perfectly with what Sophie said!

The tool on top of the Bone Marrow Ash is a powder flask for flintlock guns so that implies that you are using the bone marrow instead of gunpowder for that shot the animation even looks like you are stuffing it down the barrel of your pistol

One fun detail I like about Old Yharnam, is if you don't kill the hunters in that area, after you talk to and make peace with Djura, the hunters are no longer there and don't attack you. I discovered this while trying to do a run where I didn't kill anything in Old Yharnam. This is also how I discovered that if a beast accidentally falls down that ladder pit and dies, Djura thinks you killed it and then the hunters come back lol

I have a different interpretation of the nature of "ashen blood" as it relates to poison and the healing church. I think we should take the game literally here when it says the antidote cures ashen blood and therefore conclude that the poison swamp and other sources of poison cause Ashen Blood itself. The Healing Church was aware of that poison swamp considering the shortcut to the clinic and presence of Church Giants there, and may have even developed the antidote to deal with traversing the forbidden woods since they are implied to have been messing around in there. In the comic book the Healing Church dumped a poison powder in the water supply that caused the sickness. It's also said to spread through blood and bodily fluids. This seems related to the concept of tainted blood which seems to have been more of an emphasis early on in the games development when it was rumored that there would be "pure blood" and "tainted blood" that you could find as items that would have different effects. So I guess the idea would be that drinking the poison water causes Ashen Blood and/or causes blood to be tainted which we know in Yharnam is consumed in greater quantities than alcohol so it would've spread very quickly. The healing church just used the sickness as an opportunity to swoop in and offer their miraculous healing blood and the blood ministration combined with the moon descending is the real cause of the beastly scourge.I would typically take something like a comic with a grain of salt as far as what constitutes canon but it's backed up by the antidote item description in the game and I don't know if they would be that careless with their item descriptions (unless the poison swamp is full of beast blood somehow??)). Okay apologies for the long reply/tangent

Yeah i'll be honest the whole 'Kos Curse' angle has always been my least favourite part of the Bloodborne lore, and a big reason why i'm not a huge fan of the Old Hunters DLC. It just seems so tacked on, totally unnessary to make the curse against Yharnam rather than about the hunters. I've often wondered why they went back on the original idea of having cainhurst rather than the finishing hamlet being birthplace of Kos' child, it makes so much more sense to have the Church (via laurence) directly take part in the killing of the child rather than having it be Byrgenwerth, and then post-hoc rationalising why that gets blamed on not just the hunters but also Yharnam as a whole. The video you guys did on Kegare did help a bit with understanding the whole thing, but it still feels off to me. Having it be just about imbibing blood turning you into a beast, the more blood you take in causing you to become more bestial (or enlightnened if you had the knowledge) has an elegent simplicity to it, akin to the way demons/the fog works in Demon's Souls.I don't think anyone would argue that demon's souls would've been improved by the addition of lore around the Old One giving out curses that were totally distinct from Demonhood. Anyway, great video :)

Very good video! I am still confused about a few things however. In the line that says the ashen blood was the trigger for the scourge: does this mean ashen blood was what turned people into beasts and not the old blood the church handed out? Also, Sophie mentions that they were abusing the beast blood. Does she mean the healing church old blood or something else entirely, like the beast blood pellets?

Sorry, I only just noticed this. Nothing is really outright stated, but if you look at what is causing / curing what: - Ashen Blood is the result of Old Yharnam's blood going bad (becoming poisonous, in game terms), and it's seen to "cause" the beast outbreak because it's the first symptom of something being wrong. - The root cause is that the Healing Church were introducing Beast Blood Pellets into the area. This is why you find the pellets there, but nowhere else in Yharnam (they're in Forbidden Woods and the Nightmare areas, but not the city, unless you count rare drops from some enemies, or gifts from NPCs). - Beast Blood Pellets were developed by the Healing Church during their experimentation with Old Blood in the Research Hall. The room with the three Blood Ministers on the way to Maria seems to be where they were created, because you find some on a corpse there, which is directly above a ladder leading to a locked room full of patients who act like beasts. Presumably it came from whatever happened in that room. (You also unlock them via the Choir's badge).

The beast worship in Old Yharnam is interesting, as it appears to be a crucified and very large version of the Blood-Starved Beast. Are they bleeding it out and consuming the blood like a communion? What is the purpose of the Church of the Good Chalice? Was this the Healing Church at the time, or an extension of it?

What's interesting to me and no one seems to bring up is, why is the BSB starved of blood? It can easily kill and eat the small beasts. I like to think it was purposely forgoing consuming old blood in a attempt to return to it's old self. Combined with some viscious bloodletting, it seemed to be trying to rid itself of the Old Blood. Pretty sad really 😢

I don't think healing church ever tried to heal anything. It was probably all experiments to see what the old blood would do.

The only thing used to treat Ashen Blood were the pills we use in game to cure poison. But it was never a cure.
