This is, by far, the most helpful content i've come across with. Pre-pandemic, i've been using my voice non-stop and during the pandemic, it just drastically stopped. I realized i've been underusing my voice for almost 7 months. Miss Whitney, your warm ups and tips are a HUGE help. You are a blessing!

I've been a singer, pianist and musician for 27 years. Was trained in 2 school choirs growing up. The highest note I can hit, at the moment, is F an octave above middle C. It can be kinda hard to sing higher because, although I can maybe hit F# and G, I get conscious and it becomes "breathy." From personal experience it IS possible to increase vocal range but, as you said, it's under developed. I can now sing songs that I couldn't really sing before - because I developed my higher range. It doesn't happen over night though and can often take about 3 months.

Your videos help me inmensely. Like i was strugling to expand my range and i was getting a tired troath and the warm up makesy voice more crisp. This video challenges my range, but i see a slow improvement. And it my vocal chords feel better afterwards. Just a question. Is there a video with higher notes? And what is the highest note in this video? My max note is a g#5, but reaaally pushing it. I want to be able to sing dream on, and that part is that note.

Ooh yes, this is a good idea for a future video! When working onset, you can practice with the straw - so going from just blowing air, to adding sound. Dropping sound again, then adding it back in. Trying to keep the addition of the vocalizing/sound super gentle and easy. Straw will help!

Can you make the best exercises to keep the larynx neutral?
@SingingStraw
@SingingStraw 4 жыл бұрын
The S/S does help encourage a more stable and neutral larynx through the back pressure - so that will be a great start. Then I'd encourage you to move to vowels off the straw that have a neutral-low larynx position like the [u] (ooh like in "who") and [ʊ] (the ou sound in "book"). Good luck!

@SingingStraw
@SingingStraw 3 жыл бұрын
Try doubling up on the straw and seeing if you can reach higher notes. Also, be patient and consistent - do a daily slide/stretch warmup and track your highest note. If you're using the straw daily, stretching to the top of your range, you can expect to see an increase in your range within a month or so!

I know I’m not supposed to hum. Do you keep your voice in a vowel shape as you “sing”. Trying to determine if I’m doing it right. Not feeling tight, but it feels like almost a workout for my voice.

Good Q. I say allow your mouth and vowel to remain neutral. The resistance can feel like a workout for sure, but make sure you’re not fighting it. Use 2 or 3 at a time to get used to the resistance and let me know how it goes!

Thanks Michael! Yes, I listened to a live version (I always recommend that when trying to analyze what another singer is doing because recorded sessions have all kinds of effects on them) and it does sound like he is flipping to a head voice type sound for "will". Straw phonation will help you increase your range - and lay a foundation for finding access to your whistle register! Depending on your voice now, you may be able to stretch into that part of your voice on your own, or you may want to get a vocal coach to guide you, but the straw work will help keep your overall voice healthy!

Great videos. One question though. I Have always had huge issues with my low notes. Would the straw help me with that? I thing I have an overall problem of putting too much tension on my vocal chords, and the low notes are the ones that suffer the most. Which exercises can I do to develop my low range?
@SingingStraw
@SingingStraw 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Nadia - Yes for sure. The S/S helps to balance out your vocal fold coordination, so if you're too pressed, it will help lighten you up - or if you're too breathy, it will help bring the VF together. Start with using the S/S on your warmups and see how it affects your lower range! I will work on a "building your lower range" video as well!

What is essentially difference between basic and pro? Why would not someone invest in pro instead of basic. Is it only fot professional artists
@SingingStraw
@SingingStraw 3 жыл бұрын
The Original S/S has three 3mm diameter straws, and you can vary the resistance by using one, two or three at a time (effectively giving you a 3mm, 6mm and 9mm option). The S/S Pro was designed for experienced straw singers who want more control and nuanced variability in their resistance. In the PRO set, we have a 2mm, 3mm (standard) and a 4mm. You can't go wrong with either set, but I generally tell folks that if they are new to straw phonation with a narrow diameter straw, go original. If they have been using thin straws for singing in their practice, go for the PRO. Hope this helps!

Good question! Don't stress too much about where exactly your voice breaks when using the straw. It doesn't necessarily correspond with that transition on an open vowel or lyric (because different shapings and coordinations will also change where you break). Let the straw do it's work in balancing your voice and then move to song work!
