Really enjoyed this insight Crafty and Darren - such a great way to get a better understanding of how the magic happens in that basement studio. One question I was wondering was about the tea-towels on Michael's kit. I assume these were for some sort of dampening...or maybe he'd been doing some dishes??? In any case, it all sounded awesome. I really appreciate the effort you go to in putting these behind the scenes productions together. Thanks.

From an optic perspective, it would be refreshing to see Sing it Live perform elsewhere. Also, I really enjoyed the interaction that HSCC did with kids from the local schools and colleges. Do you think Sing it Live will do something similar?

Aerosmith's 1976 "live studio recording" of this song is an interesting benchmark - comparison. It was recorded in a small practice room outside of Boston, so: small practice room, pro musicians, minimal analogue-only gear, maybe done in a few takes also. I think the Aerosmith version was fantastic and had a great feel. The music press complained about poor musicianship, sloppy playing, terrible recording & production of that Aerosmith Bootleg album. I thought it was fantastic and the closest "live concert" feeling of any rock record I know of. The playing was a bit sloppy but these guys were very talented.

All of Phil Spector's productions were recorded in a small room, that's how he got his trademark "wall of sound" effect, by letting the instruments bleed into each other's mics.

I gotta ask. What's the science behind the several different sized studio monitors? What's the application for that?

Good question, different monitors give a different form feedback to your ears for how your mix sounds, so having multiple reference types gives you more ways to check your mix. What sounds good on one may not on another, then you have to keep adjusting til happy. Note: the monitors in question aren’t limited to the studio (phone/car speakers etc). In particular, larger speakers generally provide a stronger low end frequency response than smaller sized

@@CraftyMusicTips Makes total sense. I guess it's finding the "happy medium" between all the different monitors/speakers. Beats having to go out and try the mix in your car stereo system for comparison. 😆 Been there, done that. 🤣
