Five million people live in a land area smaller than New York City. To make such a small and highly urbanised place liveable, Singapore is embarking on its most ambitious project to date. Three massive gardens - the size of 177 football pitches - will house thousands of plants from all over the planet. This is the country’s most ambitious greening project to date and no one has ever attempted such designs before.

It is an amazing city and country, having been there many times for work & pleasure. The average American would have a hard time living there as there are many rules and high taxes, but Singapore Works and what a lovely and forward thinking country.

Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." That's good engineering but the amount of concrete, steel, glass, fuel burnt for ventilation poured into this greenhouse which houses imported non-native vegetation is just a show of grandiose and extravagance. It's not green at all.

I once watched a video that said that places with weather like Singapore actually produce less solar energy than other places. This is due to the monsoon conditions I believe. Power production in Singapore is a big problem. They are planning an undersea cable to import electricity from Australia.

Strange way of wasting resources and not ecological project at all. Also, why have male architects and engineers have to build anything without air streaming options by natural wind. I worked in different tall buildings and windows couldnt be opened, air conditioning made eyes dry constantly. My patients or my co workers and in other places my customers hated it, that the windows couldnt be opened, they didnt mind heat as much as no sensing the air flow and air circulation. This said, the glas house needed several windows for air circulation and depending on temperature to open and close some of them too. What a waste of money.

800 million US dollars to build a fair. And how much money will it need to sustain it in the future. A real waste of money and precious space. This project is more one of the ego and prestige than of eco. It rather looks that the former minister of national development wanted to let his own footprint behind. Those 18 giant artificial trees look hideous. They are more suitable for a fair. The landscape architect/designer hasn't taken account of the animals and birds. A better alternative for that region was a forest with lakes and waterfalls. Or to emphasis on agriculture because Singapore import most of the vegetables and fruit. Or greenhouses to grow edibles for the people instead of an arboretum.

Oh the irony! Let's create a huge garden, creating the perfect environment for plants from around the world...but... Build it on reclaimed land. Reclaimed? Reclaimed means to take back what was there, not create new land, destroying the natural environment. "Oh we studied the environmental effects" they will say, but no way was there zero negative impact on the environment. Use mega amounts of concrete, regardless of the effect upon the environment. I do not imagine that they used environmentally friendly versions of concrete. Use mega amounts of steel, ignoring the environmental consequences. Environmentally friendly timber is being used in construction worldwide. It would have been amazing to see a wooden structure. Include plants that cannot survive the searing heat and humidity, so create a cooling system that will lead to mega amounts of greenhouse gases as it pumps air through the system. The "average" office block uses way too much energy, so is not a particularly good comparison. Also, do it in a country that already struggles to produce enough electricity and is planning an underwater power cable linking to Australia to make up the shortfall. Using waste wood is great, but it is not without consequences. A very environmentally friendly project, up there with Dubai and Las Vegas. It claims to use environmentally sustainable technologies, but apart from power generation, what else was there?
