Barcelona, the city of the Sagrada Familia, Las Ramblas, and La Boquería, is trending. It's one of the most popular cities worldwide. However, not all the news is good. The city has a serious problem with insecurity.
In recent years, crime rates in Barcelona have skyrocketed, and the question is, why?

Broken window theory has nothing to do with public space. I am shocked! Shocked! Well maybe not that shoked. I am personally a big proponent of immigration but it seems like this is not the way to do it. It's anyone surprised? Ak this raise in crime across Europe has done common denominator and we are all going pretend that it's a mystery? Really? I've been coming here for the past 18 years and have lived here for 4 years. I live next to the most problematic neighbourhood, the Raval, and I walk though it most days, my job means that I'm out and about all the time. Despite the statistics, I've never had issues here, and I rarely experience crime. I feel very safe and it's a great city. In the past year I've hosted more than 800 torusits, mainly US citizens, on tours around the city, and none of my guests ever mentioned having had any issues. Elderly locals have told me that pickpocketing has been a present blrm since at least the 1950s, except that back then petty crime tended to be committed by migrants from Southern Spain, now it's mainly northern Africans, Eastern Europeans and Latin Americans. Believe whatever you want, Barcelona is a great city, very safe and fairly clean. As someone once said: "there are lies, damn lies, then there are statistics". I suppose if you base yourself on what it said on the Internet you'll never leave your room for fear of the outside world, scaremongering is powerful stuff.

I visited Barcelona as a tourist in 2023. My experience was great and I didn't feel unsafe at all (I'm from South Africa and trust me when I say that I know what unsafe really feels like). However, the amount of badly maintained buildings and graffiti was quite surprising to me considering the fact that the city is a very popular tourist destination in a developed European country. Obviously all the pictures and footage you see of Barcelona on youtube or google usually does not show it, but when you get there in person it's very prominent. Don't get me wrong, overall my experience in Barcelona (and Europe in general) was very positive. the public transport is great and very accessible (especially when compared to my home country), the people we met were all very friendly, the food was amazing and the tourist attractions were all very accommodating and interesting. As a side note we also visited southern France during our holiday and there also noticed much more graffiti than expected - especially in the larger towns/cities.

I have lived the last 25 years in Asia. From Japan to Korea and from Thailand to China. If a foreigner commits a crime, he/she will be sentenced, locked up and never released till he/she manages to buy a ticket back home. A bicycle theft or an assault still makes it into the national news. Crime is that rare. In Europe, we do allow any foreigner in, often without checking if they have funds enough to stay and a return ticket and seldom do we check the background of people. People under 18, could go back home the day that they reach that age, no matter how long they have been in the country, and they should be sent back to their home country. Unless, of course, you want to become a magnet for crime. Also, Europeans should not allow any container ship in that has containers on board that are not electronically locked and are unable to send a radio signal to the authorities when unlocked at sea or in a port. Only that will put a dent in the illicit drug trade.

Broken window theory is along the same line of thought as “my dog keeps taking a dump on my carpet, if I don’t clean up the dog turd today there will be more dog turds tomorrow”…well yeah duh but you’re not addressing the underlying problem which is to train your dog to not crap inside. To address the actual underlying problem you need corrective action not just clean up. Social programs can only go so far, you need to hold those responsible accountable

No mention of the stupid laws defining types of crime, 'punishment and reoffending... Anything stolen with a value of €500 or less is a 'delito' meaning a verbal warning and the culprit being released to commit other delitos. If the same person is caught after 5-6 delitos in a given period of time, the offence can be upgraded to a 'crimen' which may involve some light punishment or fine. Particularly hard to identify any of these people as they generally don't have ID or other papers and the police generally can't be arsed with a wild goose chase which will take up their time and result in nothing were they lucky enough to apprehend someone. Everyone knows how stupid this system is and how open to abuse it is, and yet it continues. And repeat.

Probably more xenophobic than smart in their situation. Immigration is the only thing that can save them. Immigration is not the problem, problem is what kind of immigration and how you feel with it. Singapore, Monaco, Iceland, Switzerland, gulf countries... have massive numbers of immigrants (in stone cases 90% of the population) but seem not to have the same problems. Because they know who is coming and those people have to integrate. It's different if you have thousand educated Korean or Swiss immigrants, or thousand rural afgans with no education whatsoever.

A local city got tired of trying to find a company to tear down delinquent dilapidated properties in the city limits that was affordable. So, the city council funded a project led by the maintenance department supervisor to find, purchase and repair older heavy duty demolition equipment. They made their own crew capable of tearing down old buildings cheaper and faster than any contractor for the city!

A lot of crime also goes unreported, as it really is a waste of time to go the police, file a report and that’s it. I’ve been multiple times to the police office in Raval, so I know what I’m talking about. The ex mayor was more interested in making parades for women’s rights than ensuring security of the citizens. Finally, the lack of opportunities and expensive housing means that stealing a wallet in a day with no repercussions will feed you for a week, while working … not really

When the Catalan people want it to anull the Spanish constitutional law by creating an independent state by a referendum that was not approve, they had created an annulment for their own security within the context that, if local people do something elicit why the others cannot the same state of outlaw environment??? I think that could be the root of the problem and the local corruption levels , not portrait in the nationalist slogans ....

Already in the early 2000's, I went twice to Barcelona. I got my car broken into both times . The second time, I left the doors open (and nothing inside) so that they would not break the lock. The lock was broken anyway (idiots!), the car was left with drug paraphernalia (spoon, syringe). At Montjuic, there were syringes everywhere in the park. In Spain, the heroin consumption was over the roof, Barcelona was probably the worst hit.

“Poverty generates crime” - no, crime did not significantly rise in the US during the Great Depression. Types of crime expand during times of plenty. Organized crime is a huge issue. Illegal aliens are victimized by people who allow it, and illegal immigrants are victimized by organized crime & victimize the general populace.

I first visited Barcelona in 1982. It was tricky then but it's gone down the plughole now. Are we allowed to say this, but there's a lot of folk from one European country really messing things up. Anybody living in Barcelona knows which country that is. They're in the U.K too and just as helpful. Plenty of Spaniards have fallen in to criminality too.

The VP lads need to realise that trying to appease both the left and right wing is not objectivity. On some issues one side may have a monopoly on the truth. Mass migration (particularly from vastly different ethnic and cultural composition) is one such issue the Right has the correct optics on.

You also have “migrants” that are french or spanish from old colonies, for example you have camaroon people in france and although they’re “foreigners” they are really french so when they commit crimes they do not go to a statistic under foreign crime.
