Singapore - WHAT IF you could register a bus as a private car?

What if LTA allowed you to register a bus as a private car, just how crazy would the taxes be? This is a WHAT IF scenario only and will probably never come true (unless ambulance bus hmmmmm.. SKP8296X anyone?)... I'll love to be proven wrong though!
We look at 10 buses from 1993 to 2006 and their respective taxes should someone be insane enough to get them registered in this alternate universe.

People in Hong Kong bought buses after they retired for a few ten thousands but only a few can be registrer as private buses, some people will register trial tests so that the bus could be exhibited. Some crazy people would also bring those buses to a private place up in the countrysides where people don’t know so that they could sneakily drive them around in the yards

I went to Singapore in 2008 for a family vacation and while you may not be able to have an old bus, you could (If you had this insane amount of money) build replicas of these buses from scratch, and while I don't plan on doing this, these are the replica buses I would build and register: - 1982? Mercedes O305 - 1986 Leyland Olympian 2 Axle - 1992 SMRT Nissan Diesel - 1993 Leyland Olympian SBS900S (In Original Superbus Livery) - Volvo Olympian 2 Axle - Dennis Dart - VO3A SBS9324H - VO3A SBS9496U (I rode this one in 2008) - VO3A SBS9661J - 1989 B10M Non Air Con - B10M SBS996C - B10M SBS997A (Original SBS Livery) - B10M SBS998Y - O405G SBS999U - B10M Strider - SMRT Hispano (I rode one) - SBST Dennis Trident - O405 TIB832Z (In Original TIBS Livery) - SMRT OC500LE (In SMRT Livery with White Rims, fascinated me in 2008) Assuming it could be done (In Singapore), how much do you think it would cost to build all these buses, register them, and taxes? Just a Hypothetical, and it wouldn't be effective as private buses become death traps after 20 years #ltalogic, and I would imagine as a collector you'd want those buses longer (So I'd keep them in another country like Australia, UK, Ireland, NZ, or somewhere else. I'd put them in the USA but I'm not sure they'd be allowed there.)
@glitchFan2428

Replica vehicles of any sort are not allowed to be registered for road use in Singapore. Assuming you wanted a rolling chassis only for display, there are tons of red tape to go though as well as audits by the government which you'll have to facilitate. Not to mention fees of hundreds of dollars per month to keep your vehicle in their system (even on private land)

If I had the money, I would've bought an old Singapore bus from my childhood and have them shipped here in North America. The doors will be on the wrong side, but who cares. I've seen a few RHD ex-London double decker buses in Los Angeles before, so they could work here.

@glitchFan2428

Honestly it depends on the bus model & maintenance. Some buses if not maintained properly can be ready to be scrapped in 10 years while if welll maintained, can last for decades.

There wouldn't be a rigid pre determined lifespan. Instead, as long as the bus passes an inspection and is equipped with the necessary facilities to serve commuters comfortably, it can be used indefinitely.

When it comes to niche hobbies like this, the impact of a very small number of enthusiast owned buses will have little to no effect on overall traffic flow, especially since these buses aren't expected to be driven out on a daily basis. There are so many scheduled bus routes out there with little to no passengers that causes more congestion. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

That's how the LTA control the vehicle population. If not the road will be jam up.
@glitchFan2428
@glitchFan2428 3 жыл бұрын
If you're referring to the practice of high taxes as a whole then I agree with you as it is indeed necessary to control the vehicle population and regulate traffic flow, however if you are referring to allowing buses to be registered as private cars, I disagree as the impact of these few buses on the roads will not contribute much to the overall congestion as these are hobby vehicles that will not be driven out on a daily basis.

Its like your goverment guessed a random number and went "Yeah that'll do". Thats madness for just road tax. And I thought I would be hard to get a car in the UK. Mind you insurance is the big worry in the UK
@glitchFan2428
@glitchFan2428 3 жыл бұрын
There is a formula for road tax calculation, and it just gets more expensive as time passes until it's capped at more than 14 years old. Regarding insurance in the UK, I heard that in certain cases the insurance can cost more than the value of the car a few times over (learnt that from Top Gear teen car challenge).
@Matt-di6nb
@Matt-di6nb 3 жыл бұрын
@@glitchFan2428 Yeah you are definitely right about the insurance for the UK. Its mad how the tax increases though it kinda makes sense for it to increase due to the age and the emissions and they might not be as safe to have on the roads compared to newer buses but the price of it is just mental
@glitchFan2428
@glitchFan2428 3 жыл бұрын
I think the tax increasing thing can be justified by citing pollution issues, but I've always felt that if a person were to stick to one car for a prolonged period of time, the carbon footprint could arguably be lower than say, if one buys a new car every year (sourcing new materials, shipping etc). I understand that in the UK certain vehicles manufactured before a certain date have their taxes completely waived as they are considered a "classic", which sounds like a nice way to thank the owners for hanging on to a piece of history. The exact opposite from Singapore it seems, on the surface at least.
@Matt-di6nb
@Matt-di6nb 3 жыл бұрын
@@glitchFan2428 I know a few people who haven't changed car for at least 8 or 9 yrs. My mates Mum has a 56 reg Vauxhall Corsa and hasn't needed anything major done to it. But as you said the carbon footprint could be an issue especially in London where Ultra Low Emission Zones come into play which soon could be across every city in the UK. Also what you was saying with classic cars is quite true. Im not sure if this has always been the way but the goverment have made it where if your car goes over 40 years it get a classic car status and a black and silver plate for the car to show how old it is. I know that wouldnt be possible as explained in videos of yours the buses get scrapped after 20 years where as over here in the UK they can go one forever as long as they are deemed road worthy
@glitchFan2428

@@Matt-di6nb my current car is a 1990 (H prefix if regged in UK) Mercedes Benz 300CE, tax is SGD3580 / £1999 per year, but parts are cheap and easy to come by so it's not all that bad. Very reliable too. Fuel economy on the other hand, not as good 😔 In Singapore we get the choice of following the UK's white / yellow number plates or a white or silver text on a black background, similar to the UK's classic car plates. We however unlike the UK do not have a requirement to display a number plate matching the car's age or older, so a brand new plate can be assigned to a old car. Looks really weird but I've gotten accustomed to it here, would be like seeing a 69 or 20 reg on a vintage car in the UK

In HK from what I understand it's generally not allowed to be registered as a private car as well, only exception so far being the red Daimler. However there are other loopholes like using a trade plate to drive unregistered buses on the roads on the pretext of testing or demonstration to potential buyer.
