Tiong Bahru is the oldest housing estate in Singapore. It was developed by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) set up by the colonial government from 1936 to 1940 before the 2nd World War. The name Tiong Bahru means 'new cemetery'. Tiong means 'end' in the Chinese Hokkien dialect, and Bahru means 'new' in Malay - because this place used to be a burial ground. In recent years, a number of trendy tenants moved in to Tiong Bahru. Privé, Merci Marcel, Tiong Bahru Bakery, Flock Café, Plain Vanilla are just a few of them. We will pass by some authentic old-school coffeeshops. We will also pass by Yip Yew Chong's 3 beautiful and nostalgic murals of the old Tiong Bahru.
A total of 20 SIT pre-war flats here and 2 rows of shops houses along Tiong Bahru Road are under conservation status. We will pass by these conservation pre-war SIT flats as well as the post-war SIT flats (not under conservation). A lot of research has been done while making this video. Please leave a comment as I love to hear from you. Thank you for watching 😀
