@@lindadalton2668 it’s a first rate sewing machine that has been treated as a runner up to the featherweight Singer because of its cast iron weight. Actually, It’s the weight of the cast iron and the solid construction that gives it a great deal of its preferential value. The 99 is a valuable machine for a serious sewist to have. They have no flaws. 😎👍

Wow! I can get one in a cabinet for $35! Needs some TLC…If I didn’t just buy a featherweight, I’d look into it! Have enough sewing machines and not enough room!🤪

I have three 99k, they are great machines. Yes definitely heavy ❤

You’re set for the duration if you have three of these beauties. Good for you for knowing a good machine when you see one. Thanks for watching.

I don't know why, but Singer put a .8 Amp motor on the 99 & 185. But on the full size 66, they used a. 6 Amp motor. Strange.

That’s a curious development for sure. Maybe they were dealing with the price of copper in the wirings. The copper wire they use is heavy gauge. Quality stuff.

@@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 I stand to be corrected, but I think it had to do with physics. Singer made the handwheel smaller than the 66. That means that the pulley system ran faster, but it would have needed more torque to start. Increase the size of a pulley and you lower the amount of force needed to do the same work. Make the pulley smaller, and you need more force. So when Singer made the handwheel smaller, they needed more force. That meant that they had to make the motor more powerful to get the same type of performance as the 66. If they used an underpowered motor, there would have been very little control at lower speeds. Maybe no control. To get the machine stitching, the user would have had to run it at full speed.. With a more powerful motor, even though the pulley was smaller, the machine would have good enough low speed control. Kenmore's solution to all of this was to use a great big motor, a 1 or 1.2 amp motor and they ran the power through a double pulley system thereby significantly multiplying the amount of piercing power at the needle and offering really great low speed control.

@@r.duroucher225 that makes perfect sense. I also noticed that the Japanese Nelco I just reviewed, has a counterbalanced flywheel attached to the shaft at the hand wheel. I meant to mention that in the video, I forgot because yesterday was a long day. ( and I’m an old guy) LOL. Different machines have varying sizes of those weights attached to manage the torque and speed that’s applied. In the old days, the operator was accustomed to giving the hand wheel a flip to get it started. Now, that’s not even an issue and hasn’t been for a long time. It’s a blend of motor + hand wheel + crank weight = success. The manufacturers who took the time to figure all that out, are the ones who make the superior machines. When we start up a vintage sewing machine manufacturing operation, you’re going to be our lead engineer. Lots of coffee, naps, CNC machines, etc. 😎

Hi, Randy, Can you tell me what the little screw with clamp is on the right side by the thread guide for the bobbin? My 99K is in a straw weave case and it sits low in that right corner of the case. I have a feeling that little knob should be doing something about that! Thanks for your videos.
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 Жыл бұрын
It locks down the machine so it won’t tilt back from the base. If it is tightened onto the machine, the machine can be lifted under the gooseneck opening and the case will lift in unison with it.
@lindadalton26689 күн бұрын
It’s a little turn knob or screw some would say but it’s to secure the machine into the cabinet so it doesn’t slip if you move it around

I’m asking around about an issue I’m having with my 99 machine. The feed dog adjustment for forward and backwards is off and it’s hitting the back area. I cannot find the manual to adjust that. Do you cover that anywhere in your videos? Thanks

I have a 99, not a 99K and when I disassemble the bobbin winding system, I can’t figure out how to put it back. Do you have a video on that?
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 Жыл бұрын
No. I discourage folks from disassembling mechanisms on their machines. It’s hardly ever necessary, and rarely turns out well.

@@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 yep, I found out. The machine was in horrible condition and was given to me at no charge so I thought I would clean it up by taking it apart. I’m watching a few videos, I’ll keep trying. Thanks for your quick response. I really enjoy your videos.
