No, no, no! If you didn’t live in that generation you don’t understand the “true” meaning of this song. This song was about the Vietnam War. The electronics future we could have cared less about, that was your problem. The war was never ending. People hated it. Instead of soldiers coming home to praise for their service they were spit on. I could go into each line for the reasoning of it but it would take to line. Example: neon lights splitting the night, that is bombs lighting the sky. Simon even said in an interview many, many years ago. I know, I lived it.

Yeah Woody, I know. I also know that disturbed isn't the first to cover the song. And that Simon of Simon and Garfunkel said in an interview that this version is his favorite and has it on his playlist.
@b1blancer14 жыл бұрын
Each verse of the song could potentially have several layers of meaning, and your interpretation would be as good as anybody else's. At its core, however, the song is a social commentary about the inability of people to really connect with each other on an emotional level. Amazing how way back in 1964, Paul Simon saw that people were paying more attention to technology rather than each other. How much more do we worship the neon god today?! You wondered about the boat. Disturbed took a bit more literal interpretation of the lyrics in this video. You see musicians picking up long-disused musical instruments. They had been silent for a long time. Then you see the songwriters in a place where no one could hear their songs. They were trapped in silence because there was no music for their songs. Then you see the musicians on a boat bringing their instruments and music to the songwriters. Their songs can now be heard. A detail that can be easily missed is the very last scene where you see the rising sun behind the boat. Finally, the long night of silence is about to be broken.

This is a fantastic song that I grew up with along with other Simon and Garfunkel songs. Very popular! Many of your other commentators here have already hit on the meaning of the song and I concur, I think that this is written as an observation and even a prophetic song about how things are not as they always should be when it comes to human communication and interaction and we must beware lest it gets worse and worse as time goes on. And yes, we seem to have not learned the lesson well since the 1960s. At least not here in the United States and Europe. I love your reaction as I always do! You have a wholesome interaction with and relation to music and it comes out in every reaction video you do. I love the way you love the music and at the same time want to interact with the message it's communicating as well. You are fantastic as far as I'm concerned! Please continue to observe music. Great Reaction!!! I've said this before and I'll say it again... A 1965 ('64 first released; a bit of a story actually) The song was written by Paul Simon and re-imagined by Disturbed in 2015; datz 50 years!! For me, this is by far the best song and cover these past 5 years!! This song literally ambushes you... catches everyone by surprise! The powerhouse vocals, the amazing arrangement, etc... just a great song re-imagined by a Heavy Metal band... done right. BTW: You've missed the band "PINK FLOYD" all together when reacting (ouch!!)... one of few bands that are The G.O.A.T. - I myself suggest these EPIC 10 live songs; the studio versions are great too!! : 1) "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" 2) "Hey You" 3) "Us and Them/Any Colour You Like/Brain Damage/Eclipse" (all 4 parts) 4) "High Hopes" 5) "Time/Breathe Reprise" 6) "Dogs" 7) "Sorrow" 8) "Pigs (3 different ones)" 9) "Welcome To The Machine" 10) "The Great Gig In The Sky" * "Comfortably Numb" (everyone has reacted to this one)(best guitar solo/stage design ever) Anything from the live "Pulse" DVD (1994) would be phenomenal!!

And the people bowed & prayed to the neon god they made.. (I think of how people obsess over their smartphones with social media, heads bowed to the neon screen, people talking without speaking, *they are texting* people hearing without listening, *reading text messages* people writing songs that voices never share.. And no one dared disturb the sound of silence) And it reminds me of how my mother and father warned me and my siblings of the dangers of too much tv or smartphone time.. people become zombies in their own world of electronic reality.. I think the lines, People talking without speaking, and, people hearing without listening, relate to the times also back then when the song was written. With todays technology, the meaning also relates. I think the deeper meaning is how people talk to others, yet talk of things that have no real meaning or value. People talking just to hear their own voice, or to impress others. People saying listen to me Isn't what i am saying cool, or does it impress you?. Other people are hearing without actually listening to what the other person is saying. More like, hurry up and shutup and listen to me!

people talking at each other instead of to each other. when Paul wrote this I think he was writing about the one way conversation the public was getting from the media. both tv and radio telling us how to think or what to think. the neon god to me was the television. we see it today how media corporations with competing agendas have divided us and that "silence" is the missing conversations we should be having amongst ourselves and finding our common goals and interests and not letting them define us and what we want. they're safe as long as we blame each other and don't look behind the curtain and find them pulling the strings. they can only keep their power if we are divided.
@kpetalis3 жыл бұрын
Perfectly said. The song is a warning to the fact that we, all of us are becoming more and more isolated in our own little world, thinking that what we see and hear from the media companies is the truth. We don't try to see for ourselves what is the truth. We don't interact with one another, we don't talk and discuss with our fellow man. And as a result, others are making all the decision for us and sometimes we don't even know it! In my country, using the pandemic, our government has already passed several laws that have taken away civil and labor rights. Rights that were considered common sense for decades now! But because we are all concerned with ourselves and having a good times on our phones and facebook, and because they own the media companies, most of the people didn't learn about this for more than 3 months. And now its too late to try and stop it... That move wouldn't have passed if the people knew about it. If we kept in touch with one another and knew what the hell is going on. That's what this is about. Disconnection and a loss of touch with the real world.

I love watching people get turned on to new music, and have been actively searching for a reactor that doesn't pause and comment. You are the first out of a dozen streamers that I have subbed to. Also, I like how you don;t do the fake "smash that, hit that " sales pitch for likes and subs. Keeo it up, I will be back.

I'm glad you chose this version over the live show. In the live video, David was sick, and even though you probably couldn't tell unless you'd seen this one, there's a marked difference. The original was a warning, way back in the 1960's, and this version has been called the rage that the warning was ignored.

@@MrsPenPal it is amazing the talent that exudes from him. Back in my younger metal days I was all into Disturbed from Down with the Sickness. As I got older and civilized this Perfect, and let's be honest, perfect cover comes along. I flat out mocked it ahead of hearing it. My daughter just smiled and told me ahead of time to be prepared to have goosebumps and be stunned. My daughter knows me. I have challenged others before that there is no perfect combination of artist and song. Sound of Silence was made for Disturbed and the World is better because of it. First version was a light-hearted warning, this was a rage filled it is almost too late. Listen to me or else. I am glad you found this. Disturbed will not be your cup of tea, but if you listen to some of their work you will know exactly what I mean. Excellent review.

The first stanza Simon refers to darkness as being his "old friend" that he came to talk with because he was awoken in the middle of the night, of a nightmare that still lingers in his head, that gives his a considerable amount of distress. So bad that the awful visions were still flashing before his eyes as he is awake. Second stanza begins setting the scene in which the dream took place: at night, him walking along the cobblestone road where he stops below the light of a streetlight. The cold chill runs up his back, so he lifts his collar to the "cold and damp." Just then, a blight neon sign lit up, showing that he, in fact, was not alone. But there were "ten thousand maybe more" all gathered in the cold night. The people who are talking, not speaking, are politicians, who are using false words to sway the population to vote for them, never revealing true intentions. The people therefore are hearing are not listening. They are taking these words that are spoken to them in plain value, not examining or putting into depth anything that is said. Because of this, as referred to later, these politicians have formed a government that the people in fact voted for and supported until it began to act as a dictatorship. This seems that Simon is making an inditement to a large government that has taken away the freedoms of its people. A future for America it seemed with the rise of government in world affairs as in entered Vietnam. This "future America" has given Americans everything, and has the power the take it all away, hence the people "bow and pray to the neon god they made." The Silence that is referred to is the silence of the people, afraid to say anything against the government for fear of death or worse. Simon, or whoever has had this dream, tries to bring people to speak out. Saying "Fools, you do not know, Silence like a cancer grows" that as more are afraid to speak, the more control the government takes and the less anyone will stand up to the new government. As all hope is about to be given up, someone steps up and says to the crowd that the future they will hold has been written on the walls of subways and tenement halls. This is because this form of protest can be done anonymously, therefore no one can get in trouble for it. This begins the whispering in the silence of the people, and starts the beginning of a revolt.

Great reaction, thanks for sharing. You seem like you would enjoy more a cappella. Check out Home Free since you know Pentatonix I would say start with 'Ring of Fire' featuring Avi from Pentatonix. Then 'man of constant sorrow' 'helplessly hoping' '7 bridges road' these will really let you enjoy some harmonies and a ca awesomeness. :) Amazing female vocalist: Karen Carpenter with 'Rainy Days and Mondays' or 'We've only just begun' Amazing male vocalist: Gordon Lightfoot with 'Sundown' or 'If you could read my mind' Amazing Band: Boston 'More than a feeling' and anything else off the first album :) Keep sharing and thanks again, Chris

This song was written in 1963 by Paul Simon. DAVID OF DISTURBED SINGS IT WITH SO MUCH MORE FEELING AND MUCH MORE POWERFUL THAN Simon and Garfunkel did. To me this is way better. I am 62 years old. I am very glad that some of the younger people of today are taking time to check out more of the older music. And.that some of the newer groups are redoing them.

This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon and Garfunkel sang to alarm us, Disturbed sings to give us a final warning. You should watch the live performance on Conan when you get a chance. Amazing performance despite the fact that David Draiman had the flu.
