Whoever wrote this song knows exactly how grief and/or depression feels like. And, of course, Kristen Bell's performance is top notch, singing the song not 'perfectly' but with the exact mindset of the character in the moment. There's quite a few hard-hitting lyrics. The part where the camera turns rapidly and the background music swells dramatically when she sings "When it's clear that everything will never be the same again," that hit really hard, that's some harsh reality for a lot of us at times.

Omg yes!! I bawl every time - especially singing it!

If I remember correctly I think most of the lyrics actually came from Kristen Bell and her personal experiences with grief. I definitely remember her in an interview saying that the "just do the next right thing" was something she often told herself if she was ever feeling depressed.

I remember reading about that. It really all adds to the performance, and to the themes of the movie overall. Truly great stuff.

The story is describing a friend to the songwriter that lost his son at young age before he needed to be at oscars, represent some prices and more a couple of weeks after. Heard it from an interview with them and it was just heartbreaking!

This movie came after my mom passed away from cancer. I felt like Anna. Everything was numb, dark, tasteless, colorless. I stopped doing things that I used to enjoy. I stopped painting, watching movies, singing and playing videogames. My body change for the worse. Gain more weight, got bold spot, my hormones went berserk, eczema got worse. So made me feel even worse. My life consist only of working my 8 hours shift and sleeping over 12. My mom was my best friend. We were always together. I never attempt suicide because of my belief but I was praying every single day for someone to come and run me over with a car. I was at my lowest. And the worst things was when people ask how was my day, I would smile and said I was fine. But when this movie came out, this song shook me(it was my first movie in the cinema after a whole year without going to one). Then I remember the things my mom used to say. " I know is going to be hard but keep going with your life. Don't give up" . And this song made realize how wrong I was. I looked for help because the state I was living, it wasn't living at all. Im not gonna lie, In still struggling every single day but I can appreciate the little things again. Like movies, music and videogames. Painting is still a no for me(I can see what I want to paint but when I'm in front of a canvas,my mind is empty). This movie have and always will be part of me and my way to recovery.

For CONTEXT, The song writers Kristen and Robert Lopez wrote this song drawing from the pain the director of frozen went through when he suddenly lost his son while filming💔 this song is so powerful and it’s truly changed my life

I love how this song doesn't have the stereotypical "happy" ending. Her loss and grief haven't been resolved but instead it's something that she'll learn to live with through her own efforts. It's a hopeful end that's still flavored with sorrow, a realistic take on coping with greif.

I struggle with depressive disorder on the daily. This is my mantra when it gets real dark. "Do the next right thing". Whether that's getting out of bed, taking a shower, shaving, going to work. The next step is sometimes all we can see.

This song really snuck up on me & my grief. When this movie came out, I had just lost my mom unexpectedly in my 20’s. I remember weeping in the theater because the lyrics gave the words that I couldn’t put together. To this day, this song is cathartic & brings tears to my eyes every time. ❄️💙☃️

This song is so incredibly powerful and important, it's probably one of my favorite from Disney and it's special for me because I saw this movie a week after I lost my mom to cancer and while it made me weep, it also helped me in a moment when I felt so lost. A beautiful song definitely.

I went and saw the movie and heard this song days before my grandma passed away suddenly, and right after I'd lost a dear friend as well. This song ran through my head and was truly a good message for me at the time, you just have to focus on the next step, instead of the entire mountain of grief.

Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Just awesome. If you’re interested in how the music all came together, there’s a documentary on Disney+ about making the film. Poor Kristen Bell could barely keep it together. In fact she wiped tears off her face a couple times. It’s an animated film, but the writers, artists and musicians are completely imbedded in the characters.

Best song from Frozen 2, hands down. If it didn't have spoilers, they could've pushed it to the Oscars--though the melancholy tone for most of it would've made it hard to track with kids.

I ran across this video randomly and yet, it feels like I'm destined to watch this. Because when I first watched the movie, I wasn't really into it so this song totally passed over my head. I was even thinking during Anna's solo, "oh here's her drama yeah yeah whatever, obviously Elsa's not gonna die that easily" with matching eye rolls. But your video, your insights and explanations made me realize just how much important this song and its message is to me, it brought me to tears with those words like putting one foot in front of the other, don't think about too much just take your steps one at a time. Yep, I felt that. HARD. The lyrics reminded me of the times when I was getting out of my depression, when I finally convinced myself to look forward, not in the far future which I can't see (which makes me feel hopeless), but to a "tomorrow", live my life one day at a time, step by step, gain my confidence that I can be happy again, that I'm not a waste of oxygen. And since I feel like the world is too big for me that I feel so insignificant, I made MY world smaller by including only my family and closest friends in my daily life and being content on simple and small things, until I felt confident enough that I'm healthy and happy and in a better place to deal with the bigger world with all its complicated problems and messy affairs. I never sought out professional help (can't afford them anyway), I did it all by myself with the help of my family. I just did what felt like the next right thing is for me, and it worked somehow. NOW I'm happy, in a strong and loving relationship and having the best years of my life, in the midst of a pandemic no less. And I owe it all to my niece who gave me a glimpse of hope and made me really push myself to get out of the dark place I've been living in for the last several years. The Next Right Thing totally encaptulates all the feelings I felt at the start of my journey to recovery. Thank you for making me realize all these things.

In 1991 my mom died from cancer. She was 48 and I was 27. I had a 7 year old and 5 year old and 5 month old baby. I felt like I had been punched in the stomach. Mom was my best friend. My grief was mind numbing. My heart really felt like it was shattered. The only thing I could do was make sure to take care of my kids. First feed them, make sure the girls got dressed and take care of my little boy's needs. Just one thing at a time. I didn't know how I was going to get past that kind of grief. I had never felt that kind of loss before. After all these years, I am now facing losing my husband to stage 4 cancer. We have been married for 39 years. He's my best friend. I know it is going to be another one of the hardest things I'll have to go through in my life. That kind of grief is the hardest thing I've ever faced. The one person in the world you would do anything for. The one you looked up too. Now they are gone. This song talks about the reality of grief, loss and depression. When you feel so lost, what do you do next? One breath, then another, then another. Then one step and another and so on. You can go on. Whatever your next right thing is, you can do it. It might take longer to get it done, but don't give up. My kids helped keep me going, they depended on me. I know they will be there for me when I need them and when their dad passes, it will be the hardest thing they will have to face so far in this life. I will do everything I can to help them. I pray that when this time come to you, you can find it in yourself to start with the little things you can do first, then the next.

This song is just deeply emotional and hits the darkest parts of you. For me it’s my depression, for others it’s grief of a loved one, and for others it’s just deeply touching. It probably made you feel something from the vocal and musical performance. It is a powerful piece. There might be something else but you’d have to look inside yourself. I can’t say for show yourself because that one is very versatile in its meaning to oneself. For my friend it was coming out, for my other friend it was a comfort song during their transition, and for me it was a reassuring song that no matter who I am I shouldn’t have to hide it, even if I don’t really know who I am yet. The lyric “you are the one you’ve been waiting for/all of my life” spoke on a deeper level as we all wear facades. Finding out why you felt the way you did is key to understanding what the song triggered in you.

It’s definitely my fav song, but there’s this huge problem I have with it. The background music. It’s so loud and Kristen bell’s singing kinda drowns in that. Everyone is applauding idina for her amazing performance in her 2 main songs, and most musicians don’t like Anna’s song much, because musically, it doesn’t sound that strong. That’s bc of the background music. In “into the unknown” or “show yourself” the instrumental isn’t that loud and you barely even hear it - Disney didn’t need to do anything bc everyone loves Idina. What about Kirsten bell’s voice? It’s just like Disney was more proud of the background music so they chose to put that into the front, instead of the voice. Bugs me so much.
