This band was tight! But Steve is exceptional. It's not just his range. The tone, phrasing, breath control, vowel modifications, emotion and power! Journey with Steve were always better live. Love it! Thanks for the reaction. 🙂

He practically sings in the old bel canto style- all vowels. He’s operatic in his own way.

Love hearing Steve Perry out sing his own recordings. I saw them live in Oakland in 79 at 14. We were in shock for the first half hour. The band was excellence, but Steve Perry actually sounded better than the records. He's pitch perfect, but also super soulful. Phenomenal singer.

Went to so many concerts in the 80s. Saw Journey 6 times. Once from the front row during this tour. They always amazed me at how much better they were live. His emotion and tone is unbelievable. My bones are still rattled.

I saw them in 1982 at Day On the Green in Oakland. Gamma, The Tubes, Toto, Santana and Journey. If you have the Box Set of CD's, there is a copy of the article from the SF Chronicle about the show. First time the projection system was used. AMAZING day!

When it comes to music, I believe in the test of time. The 80s were really special. How many anthems did those geniuses give us? We had one smashing hit every-single-week. Let's see what current songs out today will be remembered 40 years from now. 😜

Journey is a great American rock band formed in 1973 by former members of Santana, Steve Miller Band & Frumious Bandersnatch. Journey had their biggest commercial success between 78-87, when Steve Perry was lead vocalist. They had so many hits including "Don't Stop Believin'", "Open Arms", "Who's Crying Now", "Still They Ride", "Wheel in the Sky", "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)", "Faithfully", "Send Her My Love" & "After the Fall".

I was there Brad but in Columbia, South Carolina! I saw the Escape, Frontiers and Raised on Radio Tours! PHENOMENAL! 🤩 PS Oh we had it ALL in the 80’s! ❤ Steve Perry is The Voice! Ok back to add. No backing track machines. What you hear are them and the instruments! Shows back then. You got to watch the crew climb into the rafters to operate the lights! And hellacious sound engineers! You watched them set up the stage . . It was REAL!

You won't find one song you won't love with Steve's powerhouse vocals. Listen to when You Love a Woman, Something to Hide. There are so many Journey fans going back to when Steve first joined Journey that can suggest many amazing, incredibly high notes that Steve can hit seemingly effortlessly like Wheel in the Sky, Sweet and Simple. I know You can appreciate the incredible RANGE of The Voice!🎧🎶🎤

This song had only been released as a single for 3 weeks when this show was recorded. They are so good and their harmonies are the real deal. You can find video of them in soundcheck without their instruments doing their harmonies. They nail them. It is unreal. And each of them is a beast on their instrument. So much talent.

Earlier this month, "Don't Stop Believin'" was enshrined in the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress as one of the greatest songs of all time! Steve Perry said in his video-recorded acceptance speech that the band had no idea that this song would become a staple of popular music all these years later. (I mean come on: Even rapper Snoop Dogg loves this song! He lip synced to it during his stint on "Lip Sync Battle," and there's a recording of Snoop DJing at some spot and playing this song!!!) This song is immortal!!!!!!!! ***Side note: Brad, you have a fantastic voice! 'Don't stop believin' - and keep pursuing your music!!!

Saw them one week before this was filmed, in Mobile, Alabama on Halloween night, 1981. The album came out at the start of my senior year of high school. 1981, REPRESENT! By 1986 it was clear to most that this song had achieved that sort of enduring status; roughly within 5 years, ya knew.

I was in my teens when I saw this show on TV (pre-MTV). At that time this entire production was state-of-the-art. All wireless, smaller P.A. suspended above the custom stage. The entire production had 2 versions, one went ahead of the band to the next venue to take 3 days to set up. It leap-frogged all over like that. For it's time it was amazing.

I was going to say don’t forget The Eagles & Fleetwood Mac & you did mention Stevie Nicks. It was a magic time from my childhood through my 20’s (70’s & 80’s), the music was incredible and concerts were a shared experience, everyone joined by the music not distracted by the flash. The musical & vocally purity & heart these groups played with made the magic. Seeing Freddie & Queen live, Journey, The Who, Bowie, Iggy Pop, The Pretenders, Billy Idol, Eurythmics, etc when I was young set the bar high. I will never forget the last great show before concerts started to change. U2, Pride in the Name of Love Tour in Toronto. No gimmicks just passion, talent and a vocal legend (Bono) before they started to believe their own hype too much. They wanted to change the world & make you feel and pouring out of Maple Leaf Gardens that night thousands of people walked down the middle of College singing Pride together, it was magic. I’ve seen great shows since but nothing so pure & emotional. They made us feel we were “One”.

This was the most downloaded song of the 20th century. When the music is great, it stands the test of time. If you want more phenomenal singers from this era, check out Queensryche, Ronnie James Dio when he was the lead for Black Sabbath or Rainbow or his own band Dio, Skid Row, Iron Maiden. For softer rock check out Richard Marx. Also check out Styx if you haven’t already. Their main singer, Denis DeYoung has a great voice, but two other band members also sing lead on some songs.

Sorry if I’m getting boring but my first concert (I was 12 I think), had to have my older sister take me, was The Bee Gees and they are just as legendary, maybe even more when you consider they were stars from the late 50’s & the 1000’s of songs written, performed & produced by them. Those incredible harmonies & Barry’s high notes were better live & as natural to them as breathing. The show was about the music, all of it, not just Saturday Night Fever (an impressive accomplishment that deep into their careers). Then there was Barry & Barbara on her Guilty album he wrote & produced or Bee Gees & Celine on Immortality. Barbara & Celine are the real deal as well, the two greatest female vocalists of all time who also have a duet (Tell Him). These ladies don’t need anything but their voices to move & entertain. It all comes down to range, the greats (Freddy, Steve Perry, Roger Daltry, Bee Gees, Bono, Barbara, Celine) can literally sing anything from their chosen gene to opera. There are artists today with range & great talent but it’s just not as seemingly effortless, better live and pure magic as these voices were, and some continue to be.

Nothing compares to 70s and 80s. The sheer variety doesn’t exist anymore, rock is not popular like past and R&B a shadow of former popularity. Agree lots of great singers now, but too many who rely on 100 dancers, tech enhancements and more.

That era was special because it was just before the 1993 hostile corporate takeover of the music business when it became more about looks than than music. Remember JOURNEY never used the studio to enhance any song and that is why they are even better live. In fact the Departure album was recorded just the way you see in the "Any Way You Want It" video in under 2 weeks with most of that time for writing the songs. The bands 1989 and prior had REAL musicians with actual instruments not sage performing actors with computer degrees from MIT to make it all sound good! That is why there is such a difference in the crap of today and the pure gold of yesterday!

It was a wonderful time and it's sad sometimes looking back and knowing will never be there again. The concerts were different and the singers were like movie stars. But everything progresses and we have the internet now so everything is viewable right at your fingertips and everybody can be famous for anything. Pretty hair and tight pants and an incredible voice. Steve Perry said they had no idea this song would blow up the way it did. I was listening to the radio a lot in the 70s and 80s. By the late 80s I pretty much quit listening to current hits and went to classical music on the radio and my stereo system. Just recently started listening to these reaction videos and got out my old vinyls and tapes. You're right, that was a special time and I was there for it. This was a geat reaction to a great band. I agree with others. Treat yourself to Mother Father. And yes, we had an embarrassment of talent in the 70’s and 80’s. And the bands earned there keep by performing all over the country. Try singing at that level night after night and running all over the stage. Next up, try some Bob Seger. You’ll be amazed at how many songs you recognize
