Hello! I'm Andy - a semi-professional singer-songwriter from the UK, based in Germany. I'm a solo artist as well as vocalist of a rock band. I also teach English Language at university level, and this semester, due to covid-19 restrictions forcing an online semester on us, I did a special online version of my course "The Language of Songwriting."
Alongside a bunch of songwriting challenges, part of the final project included the option of making a reaction/review video to a song that my students particularly enjoy, discussing what elements of the song(writing) are special to them. I never give out tasks I'm not willing to do myself, so I recorded one of my own (Ghost Love Score by Nightwish, also on my channel). I put it on KZbin for fun to see whether there was interest in this kind of video, and I was really pleasantly surprised at the positive responses! So I've gone ahead and made some more!
In contrast to the many wonderful reactors out there, I'm reviewing a song I already know well. My reactions, therefore, are not as spontaneous or sensational as those of professional reactors ;-) Would you like more? Thank you, so much, for another amazingly insightful review, Andy--we are the lucky ones to have found you and all that you have to share with us. I'm always astonished at just how much you pick up on that many of us have missed or glossed over. Your attention to detail simply floors me; you are the real deal and watching your videos is truly a level above almost all other reviewers/reactors. One point which I think you've brought up in other reviews and is prominent here has been is Dimash's beyond engaging stage presence--even when simply standing there while the instrumental parts are featured, he is STILL performing, commanding our complete attention with a slow gesture of the hand or nuanced expression to convey a feeling. A heartwarming tidbit about Terry and Dimash and this video: Dimash and Terry (as well as Jam Hsiao from LION band) had been getting to be extra close during this competition, and after Terry finished his wonderfully impassioned performance of "Feeling Good" this night, one of the other contestants told Terry that while he was singing, Dimash had pointed at the big screen TV proudly declaring to everyone there, "My father!!" From then on, Dimash called him his "LinPapa." :D

After the "Singer" series ended, the Kazakhstan government were so impressed that they sponsored Dimash's first solo concert which was called "Bastau." I think his opening song called "Qazakhstan" would be a very good choice for your next reaction. It's an Up-tempo celebration of his country's music and culture. The Golden flags, dancers and giant eagle are all symbols of Kazakhstan. 😃🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿👍

I really do appreciate how you began your reviews on Dimash beginning with his performances on "The Singer 2017." By doing this, it shows the progression of Dimashs' abilities and how he improves with almost with each and every song. Not only was this show the first time he sang in English, but, he performs two songs in Chinese, another language he had never spoken before the show. It seems as if Dimash was actually having a bit of fun with this song. The orchestra and background vocalists are superb. They are better than excellent on all the songs for all the singers, but Dimashs' voice just demands more, and they bring it. YOU MY FRIEND ARE AMAZING!!!!

Dimash said at the beginning of "The Singer Show" the only English he could speak was what he had been taught at that time, "Hello, my name is Dimash." He has really astoundingly come a long way with his English.

I highly recommend you react to the most soulful vocalist I have heard in my 62 years, Angelina Jordan. Angelina is a true music prodigy who specializes in vocals, winning Norway's Got Talent at age 8. Now at age 15 is signed by Republic Records as their highest priority new artist. Angelina's family has requested Republic to allow her as normal as childhood as possible and therefore they are not promoting her. Her fans, like myself, are charged with introducing her to more people. Dimash has a range from C1-D8. Seven octaves and 2 semitones. Very incredible. Yes he has spent a lot of time to learn English and Mandarin,. He also perfected his French in SOS. He just continues to grow all around.

THANK YOU!! Great commentary! There are two songs he performed on The Singer for which the backstory is important: Autumn Strong and Daybreak. For these two, please use Gloria Wu’s KZbin channel, where she provides the backstory plus English subtitles! Some Dears will suggest that you to use a different performance of Daybreak, but you’d miss the important story behind it. You may want to do a “double feature,” reacting to The Singer (Gloria Wu’s taping) first, then the more recent performance.

He sings 'all by my .... self anymore' with two very contrasting placements, which splits the word 'myself' in two - for no discernible reason. It becomes even more pronounced in later performances, and it really jars on me. Unusually with Dimash, I feel that in this song, he is throwing vocal tricks in for effect. What are those staccati meant to communicate at the climax, for example. I don't feel he has any particularly strong connection to the song (why should he at 22, and at the beginning of his fame?) and it just sounds like he's being a juggler. In that, he out-Célines Celine, a singer who has a lot to answer for 😲
