It's a shame that after all the time and money spent putting on this special concert to celebrate the band's 15rh anniversary that somebody completely botched the Blu-ray and DVD release. Not only is the audio sub par with even the 5.1 track being highly compressed, the icing on the cake was the rather crude removal of a whopping 7 songs from the concert, most of them fan favourites. All of it seemingly done to allow the 80 minutes that was left to be squeezed onto a single CD and to have a matching tracklist on all 3 formats, the CD edition at least sounds good though.

Sorry but to me some of his belts sound to me a bit uncontrolled and more of a scream instead. You know if you own a Bugatti that can hit 300mph, that doesn’t mean you should drive over 300! Likewise if you can struggle to hit those high notes, one they don’t sound natural and two they sound like a shrill. If you listen to female opera singers when they hit those notes they sound so clear, his do not. I guess it’s that clarity that has earned Lara Fabian the “ring” nickname. Every single great male singer sounds powerful and strong, his voice sounds almost child like by comparison. Sorry, my opinion only, don’t mean to offend anyone.

I love that you talk about his performance as an actor, that is out of this world, and about the lyrics, that are amazing. And by the way, yes, he cried, there are real tears falling down his face. Goosebumps!!! 💚💚💚

This song was not written for him. It was written for the film and they were looking for Three singers to sing it but found Dimash who could sing all octaves by himself. The film is a science fiction film, Creators the past....

The lost love in this song isn’t a lover, it is Lara’s Mother. While Lara was born in Belgium, at a young age she moved to Italy. There she grew up living with her Mother & Grandmother . Lara was very close to both, but in the lyrics she gives us strong hints. She is describing her emotion’s, are as a child when her Mother would go out at night. The difference is that she knows her Mother is truly gone, she is truly left alone, and it has made her sick, completely sick, perfectly sick. Pain is the emotional place she sings from in this song, according to Barbra Streisand. She asked Lara where she went while singing this song. Barbra said, that is deep.

Late to the party, but loved your comparison here. I loved this song off The Division Bell, but I have to say that since I first heard the Nightwish tribute version the original now sounds maudlin. The energy and passion NW put into their version, while obviously showing the greatest respect for the original, just grabs my musical sensibilities more. In a world where I could choose only one version to listen to for the rest of my life I’d have to pick Nightwish.

The story that is interesting, Andrew Lloyd Webber tells the story of Steve coming in to try out for the part of Jesus and he said, ‘ I had this young man sing Gethsemane and I was blown away and I said would you sing that again and he did.” I had him come back again and he did it again.” You could tell how absolutely “gobsmacked Webber was. Webber than had Steve sing it for the audience there. The way Steve hits those high notes, just amazing and yet that beautiful peacefulness too. It made me cry and still does.

Awesome analysis!! And here is an amusing moment - right after Terry sang “Do you really want to see me crawl?” You immediately nodded with a facial expression like that, as if you were saying “Yes, yes! I really really want to see you crawl…” 😅😅😅 Watch here at 15:17 .

Hi Andy … thoroughly enjoyed this breakdown of my favourite version of this. I saw my first production of JSC at age 11 in Sydney Australia ….and the last one I saw was in 2014 I think with Tim Minchin playing Judas. Lost count of how many productions I’ve seen in between but Steve Balsamo’s is without doubt my absolute favourite. His performance level, both vocally and artistically are beyond compare in my book. I’ve never seen it broken down like this before so thank you and I agreed with so much you said … so thank you, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey. I was surprised to hear you compare him vocally to Ian Gillan as that was the first voice that came to my mind as well when I first heard Steve’s version. If you care to take the time … check out an Australian singer .. Jeff St John … who sadly passed away in 2018 … but had one of the most incredible voices I’ve ever heard. Thanks again … I’ve subscribed .. look forward to more x

As a lyricist, I just want to mention that Lara making scansion in five different languages requires skill, a love of words and time. I have never heard a flaw or a bad translation when she changes languages. It's quite difficult. My mother did English translations for Aznavour. A lot of poetry and effort. Thanks, Andy, for thoughtful analyses.
