I've said similar things, I think. Because of going through Sing-Off performances, I'm starting to recognize certain elements that are used in other arrangements. I heard it in Attention, and it was almost a staple harmonic rhythm that they had done before. One of the questions that I ask my students is why is it to easier to learn to hear harmonies with a group like Home Free rather than Pentatonix? And it's because the bass/beatbox combination drove so many of Pentatonix songs. I've actually heard an interview about how Home Free develops arrangements. Depending on who is doing it, I think I'm quoting Tim, he starts with the bass line and then he works on the melody and upper harmonies and after that is done, they hand it over to Adam Rupp to put in the percussive elements. We also did a beatbox style analysis with Kevin from Pentatonix, Adam Rupp from Home Free, and Layne from Voice Play. With Kevin, it is that club, reggae, smooth, and even instrument sounds like the muted trumpet in Havana. With Adam, he is literally in my mind a human drum (trap) set, with those notes of club DJ spinning. Layne from Voice Play (and I do agree when you hold them up to the same expectations of Pentatonix and Home Free, you will feel underwhelmed) is more of a sound effects guy and that really shows in their top ten Video Games. I know you guys didn't start with the video package before on this song, but it really is a deeper understanding of Kevin and where as an artist you say, this is my line that I cannot cross. Whatever that line is for a performer, I had/have a lot of respect for that.

Great reaction! This was not in my top 3, but it was a stepping stone to where they ended up and what they became after the show, so it's still interesting to see. Looking forward to the next one!

Margaret Colucci I’ve got to disagree - I think that Mitch might be more instrumental in the breakdowns especially. Because the techno aspect is his forte. He has said in the past that, if Pentatonix had not formed, he would either have done something in fashion or would have pursued his vocation as a techno dj. So I believe that he has the ear for it. Him and Kevin actually. Once they nail down who is doing the lead vocals, and they all work on the harmonies, Kevin sets the beats, Avi works the Bass in and then once those fundamentals are laid, Mitch puts the ideas forward for the techno spin on it, and they All showcase their gifts for doing special effects and sound effects! Mitch is Not just a great singer, I think that between them, he and Kevin have probably picked up the most production skills on this journey.

Scott has said this was his least favorite performance. He and Mitch respond to some Sing-Off performances on their Superfruit channel, and they both cringe. Scott struggled when it came to finding a good way to sing this song.

As others have pointed out, you missed some drama by not watching the introduction of the video. But I'm not upset about that, because I've worked in TV for MANY years, and I know how producers will often try to create drama when not enough exists in reality. Kevin has made it clear in later years that he was not NEAR as upset as the show tried to make it look.

Similarly, the jazz chords on "break you dow-ow-own" at 2:35 are a hat tip to Afro-Blue, who became friends with PTX on the show. When A-B got sent home in 4th place most of PTX cried except Scott who just looked really angry. (Search for the YT video called "The Sing Off 3 - 13th Eliminations" and skip to 7:53 to see for yourself!)

Interesting fact about this performance that you didn't see because you skipped the beginning of the video. Kevin actually had a hard time with the lyrics of this song because of his Christian beliefs. They actually had to change some of the lyrics around and take some out for him to be able to connect with the song.

You missed the controversay over the lyrics on this one by not watching the beginning. Pentatonix (at least Scott and Mitch) have said that this song was their least favorite of the competition. Everyone is going on about #10 & #12 and they're right. I think if there was ever a challenge to them in the series, they toppped out after #10 and then sealed the deal with #12.

All the flashy lighting and choreography helped hide the fact that this song is pretty weak. Not because of the arrangement or performance, but because of the original song. It needed all the bells and whistles to entertain. (Can you tell I can’t stand the original?) Compare the staging of this to the next performance, Let’s Get It On-no spoilers, but keep the staging in the back of your head while watching. My favorite part of this performance is that jazz chord on “Break you dooooown.” Apparently, they needed help with that part, so Ben Bram, one of the show’s arrangers and the guy who helped Scott assemble the group, arranged that specific chord.
