Who wants a better sound? Don’t we all? Sound is something that sets you apart from another player of equal ability. There are so many exercises that we all know and love and have done all our flute lives to try and create that fabulous sound. Sometimes we have a good sound and the only thing that is missing from making it a great sound is something called resonance.
I have talked about increasing resonance in other videos as it is an important topic. Today I’m going to teach you a new and modern way to practice resonance. Singing and playing. What does this do for you. When you sing your throat opens up. The tension that might have been there is removed. It is a way to fool yourself into understanding exactly what it should feel like when playing.

I've been using the play and sing every day in my warmup for only a week and I already notice and more importantly can feel the difference. Quite exciting. If you are interested, I would like a video on how to play without vibrato! I know, I'm the opposite of most flutists. I have a "natural" vibrato that is quite pleasant and I can control the speed and intensity, but I have difficulty playing a straight tone for more than a couple of seconds. Thanks!

Hi Cherie, that sounds like a good idea. I know others have that issue. I think it all comes down to the throat but I'll do some experimenting and see what I come up with.

You explain things so well. Just what I've been looking for. I'm definitely going to be using these exercises in my daily practice. Have you made any videos on how to create certain tone colors? eg purple, yellow...I have the Trevor Wye practice books which I use but I feel that I need to hear examples of different tone colors and shown how to create them in practice.
