I am now in the 7th month of the course. starting to have a few of those AH HA! moments. I have always had a tendency to resonate into the mask. I am finally starting to understand using the resonance of open throat first along with proper vowel mods to achieve the nice warm tone. Your course has been everything you said it would be and more!

I'm basically a self-taught singer from childhood. This mask technique was something I did almost naturally when I imitated other singers on records. It's how I copied the tonality of those I imitated. What I didn't know, because it's not so intuitive, is how to protect my voice with the open throat technique. I didn't even know what that was until watching Ken's videos. Ken...I gotta get your course. I'm about to turn 54. But i want to keep singing well for the rest of my life. Your quick videos on KZbin have already helped me in so many ways I can't begin to share it all. You've shown me some things I've been doing right, doing wrong plus a whole lot I never knew. So thanks and I look forward to digging into your course. God bless you!

Yes, yes yes! I've wasted so much time with 'nyeh nyeh nyeh' and other pinched, closed-throat exercises that force the sound forward, when the correct, healthy forward placement comes naturally when you maintain a openness and lift in the back of the throat. Some of these coaches teach things that can sound great in a scale ('I hit high C for 1/4 of a second in a staccato exercise') but they don't tell you how this is supposed to translate to any kind of actual singing.

Even when he's singing in a soft way...I asked his voice teacher about it and she keeps saying that it's all in the mask, I don't know, he doesn't sound nasal at all...?
@kentamplin6 жыл бұрын
That's right. If you open up to MASK properly, it's not a nasal sound, it's a RICH, BRIGHT sound. You NEED some of that in your sound, or it will be too stuffy-sounding.

first of all thank you ken as always, hopefully in some near future I'm gonna owe you so much from what you have taught to me! sorry if this is long but I've started taking lessons (your course) since like 3 weeks ago, and ken there is one thing that bothers me a lot and it's that I can't go from my chest to my head smoothly! I've practiced singing soft and low but I feel like I'm not making progress, it really frustrates me. now from what I've learned from you, this might be because I haven't built my head voice properly yet, cause as you say we need strong chest and head voice together to be able to this, and my chest voice is not bad imo, cause I can really stretch it and do it with power and resonance. so should I just work on my head voice to solve this? or is it too soon
@kentamplin6 жыл бұрын
You need to work on your ability to bridge from chest into head and back without an abrupt change. It's a matter of blending smoothly from one coordination to the other. You will have to practice very quietly at first to begin to get the change to be seamless.
@gabrielcornea91196 жыл бұрын
I had a similar problem, but Ken always says that we need strong diaphragmatic support, that means the abdominal muscles need to be a bit tensed in both the upper register and the lower register, and then there is the ability to open the throat completely and the empty space that we create that way about just behind our tonsils will work like a resonating chamber or a mini amphitheatre. By training the throat muscles with Ken's technique you will eventually be able to move that resonating chamber back or forward at will, thus mixing the chest voice with your reinforced falsetto in your preferred proportion and creating a seamless transition between the two registers. It surely did help me. If you don't follow Ken's advice, you might repeat my mistakes, such as singing too loud, closing the throat, forgetting diaphragmatic support at the transition point and trying to transition from chest (pingy) to falsetto (flutey) without moving the resonating chamber forward and having therefore the unwanted "yodel" jump instead of seamless slide between similar texture registers (pingy chest to pingy reinforced falsetto). By pingy I mean "it's the Law Ah" sound as Ken use to call it. I hope that makes any sense to you.
@stevieG.5 жыл бұрын
A really insightful video, but for us 'intermediates' the practice of holding a good open-throat technique whilst directing the voice towards the mask and facial resonators and thinking about lyrics and pitch as well..this requires a huge amount of focus at our level.
@kentamplin5 жыл бұрын
That's why intermediates need to keep doing the techniques as they work out. Those things that are now requiring focus will become the norm and you will graduate from intermediate towards natural/Pro.
@flavy10006 жыл бұрын
So important, that about the MASK..!! By the way,I had to learn it on my own , by accident..(a happy one =) Hope I would have someone like you, to teach me about, but, my story was that, after so many years of singing, diferent styles of rock pop, choir, classic, etc,I discovered that there were some issues when I tried to imitate Amy Lee from Evanescence, a goal for every girl singing I believe...Well, I remember I was trying to make Your Star notes endurance part...and.it suddenly made a "click" to me!! THAT extreme opening I found was perhaps the famous "mask" I was seeing and finding spoken about everywhere those days...And while placing my voice , to say, below my eyes, and opening my mouth mainly as I was making a false grin, to say, I discovered a very very powerful kind of voice, half screamy, half sung... Then I found that,again, in Floor's Jansen version of Ghost Love Score, and all made sense to me.. (And the way she OPENED her mouth there!!!) Tarja's version was more about that classic way of head voice I was accustomed and taught ,and already singing because of my Choir years.... But...How did Floor get that light and clean scream at the ending, the one that everyone loved, including me? Well, I think that is the importance of the MASK, and the way you can push your voice further.. Ken, all this "story" was just to ask you, if you can tell me , I got it right, thanks a lot, and perhaps, I also can make it clear for someone else.. Thanks for another great video, and tips!!!! God bless you!

Yes, I think so.. I ve been always observing my fav singers since I was a kid..this way is for me the best to learn, it´s kinda I can "feel" in my own chords what they are doing...but , it takes patience and time... The term MASK, was from the Opera, I didn't know about that, I thought it was because an anatomical part of the face...=)
@flavy10006 жыл бұрын
By the way, sometimes I still have to think about that grin trick, to place my MASK voice, not that easy, and it was my last "discovery" at singing..!Thanks a lot for answering Ken, I 'd want to know when exactly, your live streaming is, because I've never got it in time up to now... It is perfect. After one year of practicing with your course I improved a lot but still having problems sometimes with tension. I think i should do more posts in your singers forum as long as I am not feeling that total openess with no tension at all. I feel the breath support now even stronger cause I am using the mask so the diaphragm support connects with the mask if I am doing it correctly? I feel my voice is really strong and loud then. You said to widen the mouth as much as possible but it still should feel comfortable with no tension like a total relaxed feeling? When I am doing your scales and open my mouth as much as possible and smile really bright my tone should be like your tone during the scales so the larynx is automatically in the lowered position? So the larynx raises just a litte bit when I start singing? I watch all your videos very often and you did it so great with gabriella. I think half or one hour skype lesson with you would be great :) cheers

Interesting - My coach followed your steps - but she never told me that she's teaching me the mask technique 😂, or I ain't listening - we spent time having me open my throat through in breath, then soft palette raising via inside smile, and focusing on the vibrations I feel when I sing and keeping that sensation by not throwing the voice out - she wanted me to simply keep the vibration at the back of my mouth and above my head, but somehow I can only confidently project when I feel it in my eye area, she's okay with it - she simply doesn't want me to put the voice in the lips and throw the voice outwards. Time to time in some songs she insists on keeping the voice at the back of the mouth - I guess that's the open throat.

My vocal coach taught me to hum till my lips buzz then let the sound out then that's forward placement ( mask). Also yawning to open throat then as lessons progressed told to open throat when I want to go operatic only. I seem to sing from chest into head voice seamlessly but I don't think I was ever taught to belt so I'm confused as to what method I was taught all I know is it involves lifting diaphram and opening throat and forward placement.

2 1/2 years later Ken and came here to make sure I was right in thinking it was what made Frank Sinatra sound so out front (at times he pushed it too far but the idea is there, you can clearly hear him, good enunciation). I also managed to get whistle notes down. The open throat removes the really nasal sound on higher notes. You have helped me a lot and I continue to keep learning new stuff. Got a question if anyone can answer it. Does anyone else have a chorus effect happening in your head when you open throat and have both the head and chest voice going at the same time? Mine is like that and since I learned whistle notes if I concentrate I can get pretty much everything going at once by placing my voice in the middle and opening everything, sounds odd. Also another question, if you are singing and your frequency monitor tells you that you are hitting the same note at 0 cents, can you hear it? I cannot hear it if its a perfect note mixed with the music unless I turn it up over the top of the music. It limits my mixing. Do you have to sing slightly flat or sharp to hear it if its a perfect note? Thank you to anyone who answers. I'll upload a raw cover of a Muse song on my channel so anyone interested can hear what I mean.

@kentamplin6 жыл бұрын
Hi, Noel. It's kind of normal for us to be a little more tense when recording, because we want it to be perfect so much. But we need to be OK with whatever we get, so that we can relax a bit. It's a balance. Be vigilant to pay close attention to details, but also remain relaxed enough to avoid unnecessary tension.

Ken, does Tobias Forge from Ghost BC sing with a lot of “Mask”? (As always love the content!)

Hey Ken, Awesome video as always! One thing I'd like to point out is how agile and strong your speaking voice is. That is one thing I always look for in a singing instructor. There are some teachers who either don't have a pleasant speaking voice or who sound hoarse! Question: If one was striving for that Stevie Wonder sound (a bit too nasally for me personally as well) would you still advice them to learn the open throat style first?

Riley Cronin-SchneiderReally great question for the forum. Please post there, other singers will benefit from the reply and you will receive great feedback from either myself or one of my commentators. It's free! forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com/

Hi Ken😀😀😀,im a beginner...I'm working on my breathing but I don't know where to start to train my voice and how long I should to train my voice a day????can you give me some tips please.....

Just getting started you may not have much stamina, but you want to try to do about an hour per day, 5 or 6 days per week, when you are strong enough.

Hi Ken! Thanx for your great info! I have a question that maybe some other people could als help me answer: Is what they call “twang” the same thing as singing into the mask?
@kelolin43526 жыл бұрын
Does the nasal voice have its own passage, or is just a cavity for projecting the voice.
@kentamplin6 жыл бұрын
The velonasal port is up behind the uvula, and is the passage into the nasal cavity.

This is a great clip, thanks Ken! I’ve been watching your clips for 3 and a half years now and my singing has improved a great deal :) Most of the time now, when I’m testing out the passaggio, going from chest to head voice and back down again, my voice isn’t cracking as much, especially when I go back down, which is pretty cool. Every now and then you can hear the break in my voice when I go back down, but only because my voice hasn’t warmed up properly I assume? haha

Could you please do a video on volume ? Especially with low notes. I feel I struggle to be heard when I do low notes.

I think I stumbled upon this once doing a vocal warmup and it kind of came out of nowhere. I was doing a me me warm up in scales and then as i went higher, the sound started getting more pingy and it was resonating through my nose and like cheeks a bit so I decided to keep doing meme with bring me to life melody then as soon as i opened my mouth to say life, my whole face was pinging the sound and my voice was so loud and strong with no effort it freaked me out that i stopped. This kind of thing happened to me only that once and I never had that sensation ever again. So I was wondering if doing a warmup with meme a good way to get used to mask. Also is mask the same as mixed voice??

I don't recommend me-me, or mum-mum, or nay-nay, or no-no or any of those consonant-launched exercises. That's probably why you can never recreate that sound. You have associated using consonants to get to every note. That's a crutch that will cripple your voice. You close the vocal tract down on every M, or N, and rely on that to even get to the note. I teach with contiguous-phrase, legato scales that teach you to keep an open throat, which you cannot do on those consonant-launched exercises.
