Very helpful! You filled-in a lot of blanks that kept me puzzled about "singing". I am a 71 year-old singer. I started singing 4 years ago after retirement as a karaoke activity. I sucked but occasionally strung a few notes together. Then I found the miracle of You Tube...began using YT voice coaches and my journey began. You are right...practice, repetition and muscle memory are everything. Even at my age my voice not only astounds, surprises and amazes me but listeners are very complimentary. Weirdest thing is that sometimes I skip several days, come back to singing and find my vocal chords have advanced in ability. Go figure. Additionally, I do work-out just about everyday at the YMCA and the physical training is a big plus. So, I am a believer...if you can conceive it you can achieve it...look-out Johnny Mathis, I'm almost there (LOL). Peace

Love it! Also, it's the same as working out. Those muscles are going to be building back up while you're not working out and resting. Many times have I not been singing for a few days and let whatever I've learnt just soak in and then when I do it again it feels so much better and easier, exactly the same with playing the guitar too. Hope you do make it!

It's easier once you can identify your flaws and work on them! I've whittled my issue down to a few main things that really seem to be mostly rooted to my chest register: managing cord closure strength, breath support and tongue placement. I'll get around that E4/F4 area and either I'll get completely "locked out" (pulled chest/high larynx, tongue shoots up) or I'll have the "release", but it's super weak and I'm cracking all over the place (not enough cord closure and too much air going out). In both cases, I lose my breath and it all collapses. What sucks is that I have a really cool sounding mix, but I have such little control over it at the moment. Like, my whole life's outlook would look SO much different once I can put the pieces of my voice together.

I like to think too. Intuitively on a deep level we all know how to squeeze for a specific tone due to very primal sounds made as a baby. We have some references such as crying from hunger. Sometimes it feels like its almost a letting go and allowing yourself to squeeze. Probably mixed with a bit of my own problems/inhibition. First time time I truly felt free when singing was the first time I did shrooms. Pretty crazy what it does to certain parts of the brain. Shutting of certain areas. I would be happy to share with you some of my vocal recordings of some of my most strained singing and recording where I felt my voice felt infinite

It's so odd, I think I might have learnt on my own. At the time I just figured that there needed to be a "path of least resistance" for vocal performance to do the things they do (aside from training). Just like with everything there are rules and tricks that help one be more efficient and felt less constraint, so I just applied that theory to singing. Then it was a matter of just testing, starting small singing simpler lower pitched country/folk tunes like James Taylor, and then move up from there.

Every day I have to go through the process of stretching and thinning the cords. It’s actually great to find the shaky place where the cords struggle to hold on and then let go. It means I have isolated the cords from all the tension and other muscles interfering. It gives them a chance to work out and get stronger and more balanced.One thing that really helped me was the feeling of staying on top of the note. I know you’ve spoken about this before. It feels to me like every note is initiated from the lower rib area and into the back, the deep vocal fry feeling. As the pitch ascends the resonance moves up until it is very small and just in the nose, but the feeling of connection stays low, like holding a ball underwater - the sensation of pressing down as you go higher.For years I’ve been able to connect right through my range on a very light and quiet co-ordination, but as soon as I tried to do anything louder or with more closure my cords just let go or I had to squeeze like crazy and it sounded terrible. Obviously I was just using my throat and not finding the connection from a deeper place
@cwehden7 жыл бұрын
yeah that sense of being on top can really help people distinguish between correct and pushing even at small volumes you'll feel it reach if it's wrong. Bigger sounds require more of the right type of squeeze which can be tricky to get because people often mistake this for pulling chest or 'I shouldn't be feeling that much', so they back off and never find full voice.

You are the man! I could never manage the time for lessons, so was stuck in the "completely relaxed throat" area, which I was starting to figure wasnt exactly accurate. It seems that in order to make people relax the chewing muscles (digastric, if I got it right), instructors will promote complete relaxation of the throat as to get the pumping from the belly, but Im finding out another reason was to promote some kind of muscle independence of the squeezing muscles you talk about, if I got it right :) (I practice 99% of the time with my thumb stuck under my chin just to make sure Im doing the right thing, but ended up with just an annoying falsetto after F F#). Many thanks :D

For those who love 'Diva's" , I recommend checking out the Lebanese Hiba Tawaji. I find she is special somehow although her high register is a bit piercing and I find her lower register more interesting. The reason she sounds so good has to do with her special crossover music (jazz, classic, pop and middle eastern mixed) and also her Arabic which is a very interesting language for singing it seems.

Hey Carl, at least i seen 3 videos of you talking about squeezing. But i got a question. The squeezing lesson is basically a complete lesson that made me sing well in pro level? Cause we have so much more lessons in sing theory, but you talk about squeezing like the better and the most efficient. (And thats is a thing that i gotta insight before, like all millions of vocal lessons are more of the same). So, Squeezing is all that i need?

Personally I found that light squeeze doing nothing but making my vocals weaker overall over the course of a year. Now, I did get a bit too breathy and falsetto-ish back 1-2 years ago with my vocal technique. Thankfully I started developing my belt voice, that made me start to get a balanced and powerful sound at the same time. Im just curious, are you against belting or what? It sounds like you bridge very early. I never found these squeezing excersizes helpful, but Im not neglecting that I might have done something wrong in the process.
@cwehden7 жыл бұрын
I don't really think in terms of bridges so much, the type of squeeze I'm talking about is universal all sounds require it so light or heavy it makes no differences they all require the right amount of this type of squeeze, heavy needs more light requires less of it.
