I love to sing in my car along with the radio and I think I sing great but Im terrified to sing in front of anybody. Ive heard some females sing karaoke that were not even close to being in tune with the song. People clap when they are done even though they were horrible. I myself even clap because I dont want that person to feel bad. Does that person also think they sing good like I do?? That's why Im scared.

Karaoke is just for fun. I usually go to a dive bar where everyone is drunk and no one is that good lol

Sounds like you are very hard on yourself and you are judging yourself. Try to get out of your own way. The first time I sang I was so nervous my head was shaking and I kept going faster and faster that the keyboardist turned it from a ballad to a jazz tune! Lol I kept at it and ended up making a lot of money through the years! My point is I was like you. I had talent and skill but zero confidence. The only way to get over that is to jump in and do it. It’s not an audition. It’s karaoke. It’s singing. It’s not brain surgery. Go out and have some fun with it!

Singing karaoke is the single best thing I've ever found to gain self confidence. If you want to avoid the fear of performing in public, simply do your "homework" first, simply by practicing on your own in the privacy of your own bedroom. I did this for an entire year before I ever had the courage to sing in a bar. People will always try and support other singers, but only your best friends will actually be honest with you, and sometimes even they won't tell you the truth. In the end, only YOU know whether you're singing at your best, or not. *Take this young lady's advice by videotaping yourself singing, first.* This is perhaps the best way of truly determining the strength, or weakness, of your entire vocal performance. One more thing... always sing a song that is in your key! Just because you like a particular song doesn't mean you can do it well. I've made this mistake a hundred times, and believe me, it's a great way to make yourself look bad. But with most karaoke systems, the KJ has the ability to instantly CHANGE the key to yours, but you need to know exactly how many steps up or down you will need, first. You can even change the tempo of the song, which I often do. I love to use the Karafun online karaoke system. It's only ten bucks for an entire year!!

I clap to give respect to the person putting themselves out there even if they sound awful. I go cuz I sound awful as many others do and we all are there to have fun. The applause is for effort. It is kind.

I've won a prize or two and made money busking. But there's always room for improvement. I do too many ballads sometimes because my voice doesn't seem suited to hard rock.. I love old jazz,, pop and country.. I'm more of a vocalist than a showman.. BTW I'd rather sing before 20,000 strangers than 20 friends.

Hey, i have a question...I'm an absolute beginner singer with no musical history.and i'm confused over the most basic things. Like how do singers know witch notes to sing? if i just wanted to sing Mary had a little how do i know what note to start on? Also how do they remember after they sing song after song which are all different? Every one seems to get it but me.Thnx

These are great questions. First, thanks for asking them. lol Okay, so it's all about practicing and ear training. When you hear the notes of the song, you'll start to remember them. When you sing the notes over and over, your vocal cords will start to have "muscle memory." Some singers can find the notes easily by humming it acapella. Other singers need to hear the note played on an instrument or pitch pipe. If you know the melody to Mary Had a Little Lamb, you can start on any note you want, really. The starting note will determine what key you're singing in. Now, when it omes to remembering lots of songs, that also comes with practice. The more times you sing the song, the more likely you are to remember it. There are exercises you can do to help you memorize a song quickly, like writing out the lyrics or singing along with the song and then singing alone with the instrumental version. In general, keep practicing on a regular basis and you'll make progress. :)
