Each song has a spirit to it. If you don't understand the message then it can really keep the song from feel right. Love songs shouldn't sound like they're being performed at a funeral, and sad songs don't connect properly with happier emotions. They're playing a song to pass on culture, not to show off, so everything matters much more here.

Yeah, I´m a white man living in Mexico, but still... I brought a sledgehammer with a short shaft to the wood splitting for the upcoming teepee ceremony. Handy while applying the wedges, much easier than a sledgehammer with a long shaft. "Not allowed!" I was told. That was not how they had been told by the uncles from North to do it, so we couldn´t do it that way. Then they take themselves the rights to change the whole protocol of the ceremony just a short while after...... Well, this experience does not apply to the native American experience though, perhaps.

We have what we call, karanga. The first voice to be heard at any tribal gathering or event. It is performed by our women usually given by an elderly women. Her call is basically the connection between the two realms, the living and the dead. When two people or groups approach one another at gatherings they each have a caller. The host calls first, to open up and clear the area in well coming the guests as they cautiously approach. The visiting group have a caller also and she replies to her host's call. In essence the same thought is encouraged, because it is to the living as well as the dead. They call amid tears of grief recalling the absence of the dear departed as well. Naturally the shedding of tears was accompanied with wailing. It is considered the most natural thing expected in maoridom sadly because of colonisation and adopting someone elses ideology it is being lost. So I can understand just where you are coming from and to remember it is not about ones self, but everyone. We call it "puna roimata" spring of tears.
