Often shy, we were so lucky to catch this big bird in our backyard last week (March 2010). Last year, we caught him eating from our feeders. Didn't get the chance to put much out for him yet this year, hopefully he'll come back when we do! Update (April 2010)...he came back!

The singing or " squalling" can be heard over a large radius in or around a river or creek.....Amazing birds with a long wing span. I had the privilege of having a male to be a close neighbor during the winter cycle. He taught me a lot.....he was very punctual everyday. He roosted in a hollowed BALD CYPRESS TREE ( it was a young tree maybe 150 years of age) always arriving to his winter lair at 5pm E.S.T. If the weather turned cold with a threat of sleet or snow he would check in earlier.....he was no idiot. 😎😎😎 Cold winter days were hard on him and once he went on the roost at days end ...he was done. When the first light of a new day began he was on the hunt !!! I enjoyed hearing from him ....he provided much entertainment ....such a strong voice . When the Spring time arrived he moved on in pursuit of love and affection. I was so in hopes that he would return when the fall was ushered back in but that was not the case. Never did I have him for a neighbor again. The hollowed out hole that he accessed ( the front and only door) for his bachelor's pad was about 15 ft above the river cove. The Bald Cypress was surrounded by water......I was amazed that he could fit that big ass of his in that small of a diameter. The opening was perfect ...located on South side of the cypress. Incredible birds....enjoy hearing him especially when he got "cranked up" !!!!!😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎 THE male will have a little red mustache ......the female is missing this identification mark.

This is amazing video! Reminds me of the Ivory-Bill Woodpecker I saw, in 2009. It had white stripes down the tips of each wing and only made one loud sound, not stacatto like this woodpecker.

These birds are so amazing - I've seen quite a few up here in Vancouver BC [cedar forest] - I tried taking a picture of a very large 1 recently but he kept hiding from me then he would peek around the corner to see if I was still there with him.

We were seeing humming birds a few weeks ago, not now, not sure where they went. When we lived up in North GA, we had between 15-20 hummingbirds on the feeders and in line for the feeders at any given time. It was amazing.

YEAH, OUR PILEATED'S BACK! I put out raw peanuts along with the suet. I think the big guy must have smelled it from afar and decided to drop down. :) But I'm really upset about the hummingbirds. Every year at this time, they would be fighting to feed. We saw one or two in April and that's it! I know they have their flowers to drink from. I'm hoping they come back in the early fall before they migrate back to Mexico. I'm still guessing last year's drought had an affect on them. :(

Trying to capture these in the wild is difficult, as they are timid and will fly away when you get close. I've found the only way to film or shoot them is to be already in-place ready to go. I've seen them in and around a swamp with loads of standing dead trees. Some appear to be all of 20" in length. Awesome species :) Nice video.

I have noticed through the decades (first when I was about 5-6 years old) that these Kings of the woodpeckers have at least 2 very definite pattern calls they will do besides the regular sounding off they do... I have 2 that regularly visit my feeders mostly later fall into mid spring at both my Illinois feeders and down in the Missouri Ozarks where so far I have only seen one at a time.... The most I have ever seen at one time was 4 about a decade ago... 2 regulars and they were accompanied by 2 others about 3/4 full grown... I'm guessing it was a Mom n Dad and the kids, but I never actually confirmed that... Then again I know for a fact I've had to have fed multiple generations due to them living a (rare) maximum of about 13 years..... I enjoy all the different species of woodpeckers...

Thanks! :) I put out the, "Delite No Melt" suet-peanut flavor. You can get this at Petsmart or Petco. I also us a suet holder that has tail prop on it. It's longer so the big guy can eat off of it. I bought mine at World Birds Unlimited. You can also go to Duncraft's website and type in suet feeder. Try to put it on one of those shepard's poles, or those pesky squierrels will eat it in less than a day! Still no Pileated this year. :( Last year's drought really sent my birds away.
