Whats also really amazing is that Elvis is controlling his own fades with his superior mic control. He is also performing with a full band, an orchestra, and two backup groups, all without an ear piece or autotune. Incredible to think that this is only 4 years before his death, he looks and sounds great.

@@Carol0000P When Elvis was home in Graceland, he knew where everybody was in that home of his ... I read one of the mafia guys said that. So musically, it would make sense for Elvis to know where and when his musicians needed to be inside an Elvis song and performance. That was the Genius about Elvis.

Not only a a master singer, but technically a master. Remember that things evolved quickly at that time (50's to 70's) . Elvis was a pioneer not only musically, but very much also technically. His microphone technique should be in the books. It is truly fantastic (emphasizing and strengthening different parts of the song).

When Elvis sang you didn't just hear him you felt him as he touched your very soul. Elvis put his heart and soul in to his performances giving his all to what mattered the most to him ( HIS FANS ). I've been listening to him since 1954 age 11 & have always noticed something unique that he does w-words that I've never heard from other singers, & that is the "up-&-down " thing (for lack of a better way to explain it) that he does occasionally w-a word -- as example when he says the word "gone" in the line "..now that you're gone..." (at 4:39 on my screen) & the word "last" (at 5:56). To me this is very special -- makes the song -- & him -- extra unique & extra special -- best of all, it's natural, not "put on" or forced." He does this a few times in "Tomorrow Never Comes" at kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5m8pXVtpc-eiZI as he builds to a glass shattering finish -- one amazing song.

Lauren - could you talk a little more about the climax? That last note sounds almost opera-like, meaning I haven't heard the vast majority of singers hit that note unless they are opera singers. Is there some special characteristics to do that and what prevents the vast majority of modern singers from hitting that range?

I'm always here for a reaction from Lauren to Elvis Presley. It's often been said that Elvis's song selection reflected conditions in his personal life (his impending divorce from Priscilla). I don't think anyone else could have pulled off this song, with its maudlin lyrics like Elvis does. I always appreciate how he modifies his stance in order to deliver a big finale. It's like he's drawing out a supernatural force from within in order to deliver something absolutely magical for his audience.

Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis. One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

The lady presenting here seems lovely, so no offence intended, just some observations that she can consider for the next time. For a vocal analysis video, the only, oft-repeated, observation-boiling it down to basics-was that Elvis sang softer and louder. With respect, surely that doesn’t take a trained musician to realise. How about, to name a few, his rhythmic placement of words, his diction, his vocal range, his tone and the story painted (pained?) across his face. What’s more, if you make yourself familiar with the original song-as usually interpreted-how incredibly unique and authentic this version is. Again, I think our hostess is more than pleasant, but if you are going to step-up from mere reaction to insightful analysis (as an expert,) and, presumably, attract students, then, perhaps, you need to offer more: and who provides more scope than Elvis?Just a thought. A lovely day to her and everyone visiting.

his female background singers were the Sweet Inspirations. One of the 3 ladies was Cissy Houston, who was Whitney Houston's mom!!! This was from his Aloha from Hawaii TV special, broadcast via Satellite around the world on my 17th birthday Jan 14, 1973. I'll never forget this because my mom and I sat through the whole thing watching together. This was the last time Elvis was of normal weight and id shape. He worked off some pounds and worked out intensely...swimming an such... every day for 6 weeks so he would look good for his fans around the world. After that everything went downhill for him and he passed away in August of 1977.

Real singers know when to hold back and when to let loose, stay inside the song and lyrical content and emotion. they know how to interpret for the sake of the song, not themselves showing off constantly. Barbara Streisand and Linda Ronstadt are like that. That is if the song actually worth a damn to begin with in musical and lyrical content, like this one.
