Great video. Us beekeepers in the UK have continual discussions as to whether to single or double brood! Glad you have found a style that is good for you 😊

Some of us in Europe run single brood with only 6-7 frames in.. so they have to put all the honey above excluders and there's no space for pollen. Did you noticed that Noel has two partitions in and one frame on the outside.. its called 6+1 in the brood box. But the timing of it has to be perfect with the flow. Makes them all work on honey and just enough pollen to feed the brood

I run 175 singles myself, you are totally correct when you say it can be hard to stay on top of them. Doubles are too many frames to inspect...

Good description of which way to go on your colonies depending on what kind of time you have . When is the end of your flow for where you are at . ???. Ours here in central NC is usually around Father’s Day give or take but there will be a little amounts coming in for quite a while after that . Thank.

Natalie, I don’t know how you don’t have more subscribers, you put out wonderful content. Keep digging in and you will get lots more.

I do single 10's, a deep and a medium for my 8's, and double 6's for my nucs. We're having an amazing black locust bloom in NJ this year and I plan on harvesting this weekend.

Great video, let me suggest an experiment for you to try on a few hives next spring. Instead of running 10 frames in an all-foundation super, try putting a drawn comb frame in position 1, followed by 7 foundation frames and finish with another drawn comb frame. It is critical that the frames be equally spaced. The 2 outer drawn frames seem to draw the bees up quicker than all foundation. Not recommended after the flow is over as the bees may well cut your foundation and use it elsewhere but they will likely do that with 10 frames also. Let us know your results!

I have top bar hives because I can't lift boxes so I don't get much honey. Great video Natalee. :)

I did one hive as single last year and did really well with it, I just did it in spring, once main flow hit I added another deep cause I figured they would plug it out. Got one now and probably gonna do couple more, but just because of my lack of equipment. You may already know this trick but if you are having trouble getting bees to move up, you can put a stick under the lid and make a gap and they will move up to protect the gap and then the other bees will move up as well.

I've been doing doubles for 8 years, and i find it more challenging to inspect, also when time to harvest they usually have 3-4 frames with honey and bee bread. I cant pickup deeps full of honey so ive resorted to one single deep then mediums (1 ½ as they call it) it seems no matter what you do , its alot of work. But it has the greatest reward of all the challenges ive taken on. Thanjs for videos, yall help me stay on top of things, . JESUS BLESS YOU:)

You did splits with the double? So they bees are still building up the frames that you took out? Would explain why they are behind. I am no pro but it seems backward that a hive with 2 boxes of bees will makeless wax and honey than a hive with one box of bees. I do enjoy your videos keep up the great work
@BeekeepingWithNatalee5 ай бұрын
Ok. So both hives were doubles but a few weeks ago we split both of them down to a single. One hive stayed as a single the other we added a box. When we added the box to make it a double it gave them a ton of space they needed to fill before we could add supers, and this also means they will likely use the new box we added as a super with a small patch of brood. So instead of waiting for them to build up another box we go ahead and add supers to make it a single brood (which is the other hive in this vid) so we also probably missed out on a good bit of honey from that double because they used their brood box as a super. Let me know if that makes sense or if you have any questions

Thanks for the info Natalee. How hard is it to keep them fulĺ of food and healthy using single brood? Does it take a lot of feeding to keep them as a single?
