After spending over 250 nights on the streets, real estate developer Alan Graham realized the single greatest cause of homelessness was not drug addiction, mental illness, job loss, those were all big issues, but the greatest common denominator was a profound, catastrophic loss of family. With no safety net, people are forced to rely on the government and while government programs attempt to provide food and shelter, they cannot provide real homes, a real sense of belonging that only community can. So with Mobile Loaves and Fishes, Alan Graham set out to build a lasting community to lift people up off the streets of Austin, Texas.
Today, Community First! Village is a thriving neighborhood still growing to span 178 acres and eventually provide 1,900 permanent homes for people coming out of chronic homelessness, alongside those who support and care for them.
I got to interview Alan for the HOPE Is My Middle Name podcast, and I'm just so moved by his story and the impact of @mobileloaves To join them in their work, go to mlf.org
