I have a masters degree in human services and was recently laid off from a good remote job paying $27 and hour and I been looking for another position for one month. I am a single mother and recently moved into my place and I am worried about failing. I’m checking out resources in the area I moved and applying everywhere I can. My biggest challenge is child care for my youngest. They don’t offer all day and there’s no way I can pay bills and rent along with child care expenses. It’s so hard

When I read your comment, it hit me hard. I work remotely for a law firm, I am a single mom, and the whole point of me finding remote work is because I needed to save money, especially on before and after school care. Can I suggest that you look into Holland & Knight LLP? They are based in Tampa but have branches nationwide. They are a tough place to get into, but with your degree & experience, I am sure you could fit in well. But don't shun other potential positions because they pay well and offer great benefits. Just a suggestion 😊

Not sure how old your kids are but if they are school age your degree would be able to help you enter education. Even if it’s Substitute teaching. It’s been a good side job for me and hours are same as kids school hours. You can pick up as much as you need to and can even take a long term assignment. Kelly education and ESS are some prominent substitute staffing companies that will place you in a district near you

Yes! It’s very hard to make it off $15 an hour. I actually make $15 an hour but I have one 11 year old with no child support. I only pay for afterschool care which is $140 a month. She rides the bus to and from school. I’m only able to afford rent because I live in income based housing. I don’t qualify for food stamps for a family of 2. They say I make too much. So I pay for groceries out my pocket. I do have a car but I’m only able to afford because I don’t have a car payment. I have to be on a strict budget to make it work and I have mastered my budget but from one parent to another It’s hard to manage with one child it would be very hard with three kids because all your expenses would double.

As a single mom of 1, and rents so high where we live. It's almost a requirement these days to have a remote position. It saved me money in many ways. If my daughter is sick, I can take care of her and not miss work out my paycheck I don't pay for after-school care I save money on gasoline Save money on food eating at home I use natural sunlight instead of turning the lights on. I called my electric company to ask what times are off peak so I can do my laundry when it's cheaper. This list goes on and on. It just makes more sense to work from home to be able to get by. I wish there were more remote positions available and that those companies would see the value of single mom's and how they could be an asset to any business.

Here is an idea 💡 If you have children and you have NO job. SOME income is better than NO income. Start small. You get off at 4 and work from home. Have something in the crock pot so dinner is ready. You and your children can Uber eats goal $40 a day for 5 week days that’s 200 a week. That’s 800 a month . If you need more Uber eats on Saturday 😊

I live in a major coastal city with two roommates & a student loan to pay off-single, no kids-and earning15-ish an hour for three years put me in SO much CC debt just to feed myself & cover utilities. I can’t point at a single expensive electronic, pair of shoes, jewelry, designer bag or even designer clothes, no car, or even a concert to attribute debt to. I literally never ate out in those years. Never ordered food delivered. Bare bones essentials. Luckily I got a decent pay bump which has allowed me the stomach to to BEGIN to get on top of debt. I have no clue how single parents do it, but given how much I have to throw at debt each month, single moms’ budgets are the most relatable and helpful to me as I work on it. So rough out there.

I'm a single adult (No kids or partner) and I quit my job at CVS because $15 an hour wasn't making a dent in my bills living in urban California. I felt the same frustration, "How do they expect anyone to live off this???" Then people will have the audacity to call you a bum for not working pointless jobs you can't survive on. I went to community college and am better off on Financial Aid and Scholarships. My campus also offers basic healthcare, counseling and free food. It's been a godsend, the struggle is so real. I couldn't even imagine having kids all alone in this economy, I admire you because I think I would give up. It's beyond me why anyone would not support increasing minimum wage. Unlivable minimum wage just makes people extremely dependent on the welfare system.

Another resource (if you are okay with asking a church for help) is the LDS Bishop Storehouse for groceries - they help people get free groceries and are based on your family size, and it really can help if you have multiple kids. They have basics like fresh fruit and veggies, pasta, cereal, milk, eggs, and canned goods, as well as toilet paper, toothpaste and brushes, tampons/pads, laundry soap, etc. Really worth at least asking about at your local LDS church! My mom and I are LDS and when my parents divorced my mom and I lived off of food from the storehouse for a solid year if not longer.

In this economy you either pay rent or have a car. You can't have both. Also if I was getting that amount I would not have a child. If you are single, childfree and don't have a car. You can make that work but you can't really save.

I’m confused, I pay child support (out of court agreement/never late, do after school pick ups and watch my youngest during the day as well as doing all doctors appointments and parent teacher conferences and my ex pretends she has it “hard” not to mention I have 2 overnights a week. Every other month she’s moving the goal post because of her own personal struggles. I work 3rd shift not to mention so technically I’m doing the equivalent of 5 overnights a week as I’m responsible for them during the week days. 🙃

I’m here because I’m getting ready to start over. Today I received my cheque I was shocked because the money they paid me that was my pocket money my husband used to give me! He refused me to work and I was a slave and a made he never appreciate me. So I’m scared how I will make it but my happiness and my son’s safety comes first 😢God will walk with us and I will overcome this send prayers for me🫶🏾❤️
