Atomic Shrimp

Күн бұрын

A week or so ago, I unboxed a pack of assorted wet wipes - in one of the comments, someone asked when I would review condiments - so I set about gathering a collection of single-serving packs.
The collection is way too big already to review in one video, so here's the first instalment - breakfast!
In this video, breakfast items which I bought at www.sachetsandmore.com/ (not affiliated)
In future videos, we'll be looking at the dips, sauces and other condiments - some of which were sourced from the above store, others from eBay, and yet more from restaurants and cafes that I happened to visit.

This is somewhat surreal in terms of my spending half an hour watching someone eat little pots of jam that I’m already familiar with, but also utterly relaxing?? Atomic shrimp has definitely become my go to chill out channel.

My last care home used to portion everything at breakfast time - powdered milk on a tiny bowl of cereal - gross - more so when they don’t put enough milk in the water - or too much water in the milk - they put marge and marmalade in little cups normally used for the dispensing of medication - we could have either, but not both, cereal or toast - but at least they allowed us to have both marge and marmalade on toast - unlike my auntie - Either butter - or jam! Not both! (didn’t have marmalade!).

What is Marmite? Marmite is an immense serving of glorious, savoury flavour in a tiny package. Marmite is umami for your face, fermented goodness that should be partaken in a respectably small portion. (Tasting notes also apply to Vegemite, Promite, Cenovis, and other yeast extracts.)

Great tip about adding some crystallised honey to runny honey - I’ll try that. Last year I picked loads of young elderflower heads and left till all bugs had crawled off, shook them a bit, snipped off stalks and stuffed them into a jar of honey. I left it to infuse for a couple of months then strained into a fresh jar. Added a strip of unwaxed lemon peel. Do try - it’s easy and wonderfully floral. Nice memory of early summer at Christmas time.

Interesting factoid, blackcurrant is not permitted to be grown in the US because it is an alternate host for a disease of white pine called white pine blister rust. It's a fatal disease and ruins timber yields, ergo no blackcurrant for us. 😟

Ruined the hot chocolate immediately. You should put chocolate first, then add a small amount of water, stir until it becomes a paste, then keep adding to from paste to thick and runny, then runny, then top up for hot chocolate. It keeps from having lumps or half of it sticking to the bottom.

Oh, and i did like that your shirt (cannot think what it's called, back in the day..) basically matched your table-cover, as did the packet colors match, too. Funny. I'll keep watching. @@philaphobic Sort of, but also a bit like lowbush blueberries, and a bit like ripe black cherries - there is definitely a very strong 'dark fruit' identity, but also other flavour components that are hard to pinpoint - including a sort of musky bitterness that is almost savoury, if I was forced to compare it, I would liken it to the bitter, savoury, aromatic components of freshly picked tomatoes (or in particular, the smell of tomato stems and leaves). It's not the same, but that's the closest I can think of

My first boarding school used to offer us honey or marmalade on toast - then they turned into a glorified health farm - took both honey and marmalade off the menu and replaced them with a rather gross-looking substance that resembled (to us) chip pan fat with brown sugar in it - I was assured that it was honey - however, nobody liked it - but that wasn’t enough to make them stop serving it - the school was in the Cotswolds and the so-called honey was said to be Cotswold honey - if that’s Cotswold honey, the Cotswolds can keep it! Looked similar to that crystallised stuff in the video, but worse!

I’m one of the few Americans who didn’t cringe at the taste of marmite when I first tried it. Like you said if you like really savory and salty things then chances are you may like marmite. It has a similar taste to soy sauce and smells like beef bouillon. It adds a great meaty flavor to vegetarian and vegan dishes and I would imagine that it enhances the umami factor of dishes with meat.
