@@Matt19matt19 Second the comment about Vivera steaks (although I'd really like to see a review of their bacon bits, which are quite shockingly authentic). The steaks aren't anywhere close to a convincing substitute for an actual steak, but they're tasty and easily an improvement on processed meat.
@NALGames5 жыл бұрын
This is pretty much exactly what I expected! I'm not a vegetarian (yet), but I figured a sausage roll would be about the best meat product you could ever translate, since they're all seasoning with the processed meat as a "binder" more than an actual flavour component. Replicate the texture and density, and you're pretty much ending up with the same result. Great to see Gregg's have managed that! And let's face it, Piers was always going to be spitting it out for the attention and the reaction, the actual taste of the vegan sausage roll was a non-factor for him.
@hickey12925 жыл бұрын
I am vegan, but sausage rolls are as you said, one of those things that it really isn't hard to get right as long as the seasonings are correct. It's been a little while since I had the pork version, but I used to eat far too much meat, and the vegan version seems to taste close enough to the original that I can't distinguish much of a difference. Piers Morgan is just a bit of a dickhead. But then again, we already knew that. He turned the whole sausage roll thing into a protracted tantrum on twitter for publicity as well. Greetings from Sweden! My wife and I switched to vegetarianism for around four years, with a few months of that being vegan (just to try it out). We've recently returned to an omnivore diet, but have been bowled over by just how good some of the vegetarian recipes and products are (not so much vegan, but some is okay). Both now play an important part in our life, and have changed the way we think about certain ingredients and meals. Processed meat has taken a hit in favour of the more enjoyable soy-based counterparts, such as burgers, mince and other such things, mainly because most processed meat is very poor quality. One of our favourite treats is vegetarian burgers, because beef always left us feeling weighed down and sluggish after eating. Not so with the plant-based burgers. Not all are good, but some burger brands are amazing. We still enjoy good beef, but in far lesser quantities. Pork is also nice, but more rarely used. Fish is used fairly regularly, chicken is our favourite protein, all of which we eat in lesser quantities, with our diet consisting mainly of vegetables and pulses. I think everyone should switch to vegetarianism for a month or 2 (or more if able) to pressure them into having to find alternatives to meat. I'm sure they would also realize, quickly, that many vegetarian or vegan substitutes are actually far nicer than most of the poor quality processed meat options. It's only the higher quality meats and cuts of meat that can't really be substituted. But the majority of people can't afford to eat those ingredients everyday anyway. Oh, and Piers is an idiot and an embarrassment to Britain...

@Charky_Creations4 жыл бұрын
@DriftZ TwoSeven there's also an element of being able to use other recipes. Making a seasoned ball and calling it a "meatball" tells you to put it in tomato sauce. Calling it a disk "burger" tells you to put it in a bun with cheese. Most long-time vegetarians are happy to eat "dehydrated soya protein chunks", but labeling things with the meat they resemble is an efficient way to know which recipes you can put it in.
@kieranwhitton36714 жыл бұрын
@DriftZ TwoSeven alot of vegetarians / vegans enjoy the taste of meat from when they were meat eaters, but only switched to a plant based diet for morality reasons. So they look for something that has the same/similar taste to the meat they used to eat, but from a more moral source. It's not that all vegans hate the taste of meat. Meat is naturally tasty. Evolution and our selective breeding of animals has made sure that the meat they produce is of a really good quality. So it's natural for humans to like the taste of meat and therefore want to replicate it without harming animals

Where I'm from we have what is called an Amish Market. They make all kinds of baked goods from scratch there. The pretzels are amazing, but their second best seller is the sausage rolls. I'm telling you, once you have good quality fresh, there is no going back. : )

I also done a review on this, i normally dont eat sausage rolls because i just find them such low quality meat unless its some proper expensive version, but after trying the Vegan one i love it, much better, because its more herby as you said rather than that cheap pork taste, also my girlfriend who has dairy intolerant she now can have the vegan roll. Also tried the vegan steak bake & i love that to, its more onion type sauce rather than that brown steak sauce flavour.

They can be eaten hot or after they have cooled from cooking. These were still pretty warm

Sausage rolls are such a UK thing. I'd like to try one, but they're hard to come by in the states. We normally stick to lightly seasoned garbage in a Macdonald's wrapper. . .
@augustinaslukauskas44335 жыл бұрын
Now I want one! I like how you compared which ones taste better instead of comparing if the vegan ones taste like meat. Unfortunately, I couldn't find their ingredient list online. Does anyone know it?
@AtomicShrimp5 жыл бұрын
The main ingredient of the sausage appears to be Quorn (cultured mycoprotein) - I am not really sure about the rest. The pastry was really crisp, so I think some sort of hard vegetable fat was used there

Thanks - I'm an omnivore who is realising that his consumption of meat was and is pretty unsustainable, so, whilst I am perfectly capable of cooking and/or enjoying a fully vegan meal, these products provide a useful bridge to general reduction of meat consumption, I think. Shame Greggs has now shut because of COVID-19, but it was the right thing to do

Atomic Shrimp I live in Columbus, Ohio and last night, Monday night, the Governor ordered a mandatory level three emergency lockdown. The only places open are national chains with shortened hours and all local shops have been closed for weeks now. The governor postponed Ohio’s primary election last Tuesday and I’ve never seen anything like that before. Hopefully all this helps and we can get back to normal as soon as possible.

HP sauce isn’t common in the states (at least where I am). Is it vegan by chance?

To be fair sausage is one of the easiest meatproduct flavours to imitate. Beyond burger paddies even taste like sausage. I was more worried about the pastry being dry or flavourless, since some vegetable fats tend to be quite bland in taste.... but then, the porksausages pastry isn't necessarily made with butter either. ...Now I really want to taste that vegan roll too.

Can you do a video comparing different brown sauces? HP, Yorkshire relish, brown sauce etc. I don't consider HP to actually be brown sauce. It's made of tomatoes and is more spicy whereas a brown sauce is made of apples (I think)
@AtomicShrimp4 жыл бұрын
I might do - I bought them all in a while ago, but never got around to making the video. Interesting point of view about HP. I would say many people regard it as THE brown sauce - the standard by which others are judged

What is your opinion on the plant based beef substitute?
@AtomicShrimp4 жыл бұрын
They're typically not really like beef in texture, and often lack the depth of flavour of real beef, however, in some applications, they are as good. Occasionally better - the Greggs vegan steak bake is a triumph - they totally nailed the flavour, and replacing the beef with Quorn means greater consistency of quality, and no chewy gristle
@kathleenfleming75194 жыл бұрын
@@AtomicShrimp thank you for your help with that. I have heard harsh opinions of how bad they taste, or the ingredients that are in them. It made me leery to try any plant based meat substitute.
@AtomicShrimp4 жыл бұрын
I have tried a couple of different varieties of fake beef burgers recently (I forget the brands): One that was based on wheat protein - was surprisingly meaty in texture, but tasted like raw pasta even when cooked One based on pea protein that was nicer in general, but I could taste that I was eating processed legume protein - it had quite a concentrated 'beany' aroma Impossible/Beyond burgers - these were pretty good and really tasted like they must have meat in them; the texture was a little soft and crumbly, but not all meat-based burgers are the same as each other. On the health and ethics; as far as I understand it, most of the fake beef burgers are marginally better for human health than actual beef - they are not typically lower in fat, but it's different fats, and they contain fibre. They are, I believe, significantly better in environmental impact, if for no other reason that raising beef consumes an absurd amount of resources, and emits a lot of CO2

@ferrumignis4 жыл бұрын
What a great review, definitely going to give these a try. Interesting to note that there is little difference between them in terms of nutrition; total energy is virtually the same, with a tiny bit less fat and a bit more protein in the vegan one so it's not really a 'healthy' alternative which some might expect.
@BeckettSmeckett2 жыл бұрын
The only downside I think the vegan sausage roll had is the lack of egg wash on the pasty, it's pretty much just aesthetic but the lack of shine does make it look a little sad. I wonder if there's a v different wash they could use to make it shiny?
@oxybrightdark87653 жыл бұрын
Personally, I saw this , and I didn’t think the meat would be hard to replace. But the egg glaze on the pastry, I was wondering about. After all, the sausage in a sausage roll is not a high meat content sausage. I don’t know what can copy egg glaze.
@blahza123453 жыл бұрын
For the glaze, one can use milk (not for vegans though!), plant milk, or oil - all cause a bit of browning when baked

I love trying vegan/veggie options of stuff, sometimes it's surprisingly better, frequently it's about the same, since... ya know, the flavor of meat mostly comes from how it's cooked, seasoned, etc. Especially sausage.
