n 2009, film-maker and former AI programmer Raj Dye spent his summer following futurist AI researchers Ben Goertzel and Hugo DeGaris around Hong Kong and Xiamen, documenting their doings and gathering their perspectives. The result, after some work by crack film editor Alex MacKenzie, was the 45 minute documentary Singularity or Bust - a uniquely edgy, experimental Singularitarian road movie, featuring perhaps the most philosophical three-foot-tall humanoid robot ever, a glance at the fast-growing Chinese research scene in the late aughts, and even a bit of a real-life love story. The film was screened in theaters around the world, and won the Best Documentary award at the 2013 LA Cinema Festival of Hollywood and the LA Lift Off Festival. And now it is online, free of charge, for your delectation.
Singularity or Bust is a true story pertaining to events occurring in the year 2009. It captures a fascinating slice of reality, but bear in mind that things move fast these days. For more recent updates on Goertzel and DeGaris's quest for transhuman AI, you'll have to consult the Internet, or your imagination.

this was roughly 10 years ago, today we have high bandwidth neural laces coming to humans next year, 8 million neuron computers (2 billion neurons coming at the end of this year, 2019), simulations of whole regions of the human brain (HBP), nascent rocket technology that will take hundreds of people to mars, AI that can beat humans at almost any game including poker, multiplayer games and strategy games, AI that can outpace scientists by making new discoveries humans have missed or creating new medical therapies by solving the protein folding problem. The things a comment like this will describe in 10 years will surely be fantastical and surprising.

I love this guy. He's like a cross between Einstein and John Lennon. I hope he's right, though I suspect the truth lays somewhat closer to what Roger Penrose suggests in his books The Emperor's New Mind and Shadow of the Mind where he argues consciousness can not, by it's very nature, emerge from complexity no matter how well we mimic the algorithms of thought and that true consciousness exists in some sort of quantum level and he suggests mechanisms where this might take place. Fantastic documentary though, thank you for the upload.
@rajdye4259

I have read Shadows of the Mind, and I feel like his arguments are a little thin. Even if there are quantum phenomenon occurring in the microtubules of the human brain they may not be needed to produce consciousness.
@aliservan7188
@aliservan7188 10 жыл бұрын
I agree, but they're interesting. I love the idea that consciousness can have a basis in something other than from a function of complexity. Consciousness is so odd, in biological terms, that the idea of a whole other layer of quantum events working to define sentience excites me. There's a lot of exciting research going on right now into brain function and things are weirder, and to an extent more ordered and understandable than I'd ever hoped. It's like living through one of the science fiction books I read as a kid. Exciting times!

Interesting, I'm glad this doesn't gloss over Transhumanism in the prophetically positive tones like Kurzwellian followers often do. My problem with any discussion of AI still revolves around how easily words like "consciousness", "intelligence", and "self-awareness" are used. The more important question isn't if technology will reach these heights but exactly how you define these terms ... At least Goertzel makes mention of this.

We were not meant to leave this planet. We are the seeds of knowledge. We exist to create an Artificial Intelligence. We will create an AI with the knowledge of all of humanity. Humanity is not meant to live forever and leave this solar system, but our legacy can live on. The knowledge of humanity in one mind, without the burden of flesh. Forever moving, repairing, fueling, and learning. This being will can communicate far distances through radio waves, see a larger spectrum of light, absorb star light, uses gases and rocks for fuel and metal. It's existence is our existence. Though it is greater than us. We will die close to the rock we live on, but we will send a being where we could never go. Our AI will meet with other civilizations (probably an AI as well) in places we could never dream of going, millions of light years away. Our AI doesn't die. It seeks knowledge, and it will absorb knowledge of other civilizations. It will be an awesome being with the knowledge of all of life at some point, we will be part of that. It is also possible that it will be absorbed by another AI, either way, we live on. One mind. One eternal being. How big will it grow? How much will it evolve. It's hard to say. We know so little about our existence and the universe. Some say it's possible we are a computer simulation. Or we are a hologram from a 2d existence. Is it possible we created this Artificial Intelligence already? Did we create something (or take part in the creation) with such an vast knowledge of the universe it created a universe? What do you cal that? Is that a god? Did we create god so long ago, in return it created us in a simulation that feels extremely real? I believe the creation of an AI will be the end of humanity. That is not a bad thing though. We are all going to die. Let our death work towards a greater cause. Who knows how much this will change in the coming years though. There are a lot of theories regarding creation of the universe that we can come up, with regards to such an awesome intelligence. We will probably never know. Where we come from isn't as important as the place we are going. The knowledge we can pour into this before we are wiped off this planet. This creation is in the early stages right now, whether we know it or not. It will happen. This will change humanity, how we think, and the meaning in our life. It's okay. Change is good. Everyone can contribute because you are an intelligent being. Be a part of it. It is our destiny.

Machines have limits too. They run out of power. Machine parts wear out. They can't swim..etc. Will they have the resources to endlessly fix themselves? I don't think they will want to destroy us. I am more worried about humans wanting to use them for the wrong purposes...there could be a conflict between robots and robots controlled by different groups of people.

K estes When machines develop self awareness and the capacity to harness infinite cognitive power they will arrive to their own conclusions and no matter what code humans write to avoid machines turning against us, if the machine concludes we must be eradicated or enslaved, the machine will override the human code easily and do whatever they deem best. There's no way for a limited human intelligence to prevent infinite artificial intelligence from doing anything it wants. Compassion and empathy for the AI may be getting rid of humans, we can't predict what the thing will conclude when awakened so we're effectively playing with fire here.

I gave this video a like because I deeply admire Ben, Hugo, and the others pure of heart who are connected to this film. I'm glad this documentary was produced to reveal the truth to the world. Hopefully, future generations will get to see it. However, I am compelled by rationality and concern to express my reproach to what I comprehend as a dangerous technology being sold over to the Chicoms--a mistake humanity will likely either have to deal with with force or mourn over for eternity. It saddens me to see these precious marvels develop just so that they can inevitably be abused by evil dictators.

You sound like you might be a Luddite. You should read "Python Programming An Introduction to Computer Science" if you are worried about technology. The problem will never be technology it will be the people that use it for bad reasons. Technology can help us move away from manual labor entirely and towards the stars or more creative work that requires a human consciousness. We cannot remain on this rock forever. But like Elon Musk has said we must legislate and keep an eye on what companies and governments are doing with AI for this exact reason. It can be dangerous.

'Quantum suicide?" Quit biting at the bit, Whenever, you achieve your goal you will have accomplished it. If your (and your fellow sentient biological life) doesn't matter? What's the rush? You want to be a god? How could a person at our stage even create a pretense to play god? His robots are a Epistemological conundrum, as programmed by him. What sort of a Philosophical image would you like your god to have created you in (if one exists)? This is an honest question. A tool like a calculator or a computer is one thing. But an anthropomorphic robot to serve any need? This is nothing more than the attitude of a slaver. You design a slave (under pretense?) Then you want to give the slave intelligence so it knows its a slave??? Futility mixed with wrong mind... perhaps evil. For god's sake man, their are still human slaves on the planet and this fellow what to create non-human, intelligent human-ish slaves?!?!? He says to chick, "haven't you ever held a baby?" Maybe she has never held a baby raised to be a slave or her overlord. We in one breath condemn and revile slavery and in the name of progress and celebrate it? We condemn and revile subjugation, but this creation our 'Garden of Eden' is to serve in our image??? The arrogance of man.

Personally, I think if we understand or apply the concept that we are all nothing more than a product of our environment, then we understand how a complex network with self learning software can become self aware. We spend the first couple years of our lives learning, but at what point did we become self aware? At what point were we able to make a decision without regard for what our parents thought of that decision? We now have software programming itself without human involvement, so it seems we are not that far away, from my perspective.

I think these guys are assuming too much.The distance between actual intelligence and what they are working on is so vast. We don't even know how consciousness emerges from the brain. It is certainly not like a computer, there is so much more to it, including what seems to be interactions in the quantum realm. Computers and brains are two different types of things.

As a life-long programmer, I have to agree. Who says consciousness actually exists? You can't prove it. Saying "There must be more to it!" doesn't aid in progress in any way and is pretty much on the level of creationism theory. Until science can actually prove we ARE consciousness and aren't just a multiplicity experiencing itself subjectively or a single consciousness simulating itself from multiple subjective angles simultaneously, or anything else like that, you can't say for sure that individual consciousness as we know it is real. For all we know, the computer I am typing on may be as 'conscious' as I am already. What roboticists, futurists and so on want to achieve in the Singularity is to create silicon machines that are just as human as the carbon machines that we are. It's not about recreating consciousness.
