Wouldn't aliens communicate by quantum entangled systems that preclude finding a radio signal. If there is a reason in physics why this isn't likely please enlighten.
@jeschinstad
@jeschinstad 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe Clarke-tech will proclude us finding aliens, because it will appear to us as magic. Maybe we'll discover that some of the stars are artificially created as habitats for advanced cultures. We have extremophiles on Earth, living in unimagible environments; why couldn't an unimaginably advanced culture be extremely extremophile? They're looking for things they know how to find, because it's easier than finding things you can't imagine. But radio doesn't necessarily imply communication. We wouldn't replace radar with fibre optic cables, for instance. They might use radio for beacons to guide drones. Light-speed communication will probably never become completely worthless, regardless of how advanced a civilization is. The hammer was invented 3,3 million years ago, some say, but we still use hammers today, because it's a useful thing. We have nail guns, but sometimes, all we need is a hammer and if we do find alien beacons, they'll probably still be using hammers too.
@Rayalot72
@Rayalot72 5 жыл бұрын
This is answered in the talk. Physics implies entanglement cannot communicate information faster than the speed of light, meaning it's obsoleted by radio waves (since they're photons).

The answer to the Fermi Paradox.There is a beautiful loving Universe many people claim they experience when they are undergoing an NDE. Long before any Advanced Civilization gains the technology necessary for Interstellar Travel - they find a way to escape to that Universe. In other words, it is technologically easier to get to that other very pleasant and safer place, than it is to develop the Type II Civilization Technology necessary for Interstellar Travel. This explains why we have found no sign of an Advanced Alien Civilization anywhere in our Universe.

Questions for SETI: - What is the maximum distance of stars that SETI is currently probing? - I've never heard Dr Seth Shostak talk about the fact that we are probing in the past for extra-terrestrial life. It would be nice to know what a prominent scientist like Dr Seth Shostak has to say about that. As an example, if SETI detects a signal from a solar system that is 500 to 10,000 LY away, that would mean that the level of technology of the civilization where the signal it is coming from is currently (advanced enough to send signal + 500 to 10,000 years of additional evolution). If we add that technology tends to follow an exponential evolution, the implications for that civilization would be very scary for us. That civilization would necessarily be much more advanced than us. It would change humanity''s self-perception to something else forever! In a sense, it's a blessing that such signal has NOT been found yet! Is humanity ready for this?

In Crick’s book Life Itself: Its Origin and Nature, he writes: “The immensity of complex coded and precisely sequenced information (in DNA) is absolutely staggering. The DNA evidence speaks of intelligent, information bearing design. For life to form by chance is mathematically virtually impossible.” What's more, scientists have no idea what caused the Cambrian explosion when animals with brains, eyes, skeletons, appendages, hearts, etc. appeared out of nowhere from simple multi-cell organisms like sponges, overnight. Fermi's Paradox explained? Not to mention how DNA appeared on Earth only 600 million years after the Earth was formed.

One of the overriding themes and criticisms of SETI is that we likely wouldn't recognize any signals coming from alien civilizations or that they might not have even used radio waves on frequencies that we are able to comprehend...but then, many of these same scientists go on to mock the idea that extraterrestrials would have the ability to have come here or are here on a regular basis because the distances are too vast...forgetting that really only a couple of hundred years ago, it was incomprehensible to think that man could sail around the earth...or that the earth was even round. Shostak claims that alien ships would require more energy than the earth consumes in three years (or some such figure) in order for them to travel at a acceptable rate of speed to traverse the universe. Really? He knows the technology limits of other civilizations?

Hes speaking from a point of view of our understanding of the laws of physics and energy. We have no idea how to build something that could power a ship to speeds fast enough to move around the galaxy in any short amount of time. Hes not saying for a fact that he knows no other alien civilization could figure this out, hes saying that its unlikely they have came here because its extremely difficult.

The earliest human made signals date from 1837 (Morse) and were very weak (1-10 attoJanskys at the orbit of pluto). I Love Lucy would be about 1 microJansky is strength at 5 light hours out.
@bobbyd6680
@bobbyd6680 3 жыл бұрын
Yep. Those 1837 "signals" of Morse were spark gaps, basically static from electric sparks. Most of the those low frequency would've been bounced back to earth off the ionosphere. It wasn't until after WWII when VHF (above 50mhz) frequencies were coming into use. Even the AM radio broadcast channels wouldn't leave the atmosphere. That said, assuming around 1950 with broadcast TV, and public service, becoming popular those signals have only traveled 70 light years from earth and would be very, very weak. Unless they were directed in a straight line beam and another planet was pointing a receiving antenna toward earth, then it would be remote chance they have been intercepted.

The religious upheaval (mass suicides), social unrest (murder, rape, etc.), shortages of food, water, fuel (you really think people will still be working at their jobs?) and the eventual imposition of Martial Law nation wide, you folks really think YOU are going to get to meet them and ask questions? Get real. The best you can expect is getting beamed up off a country road and anally probed.

The assumption that is the foundation is that life self originates. If life's presence on Earth is not by materialistic naturalism but by an intelligent cause, then an estimate of millions of extra terrestrial life could be zero. An equation that makes a prediction of millions when the actual numbers are zero is a bit humiliating I would think. But it's based on the assumption that life creates itself. When I was a little boy, I asked my Dad where I came from, he said from mother's tummy. Until then I thought I created myself. I had to face the shocking truth.
