How to Upgrade 36V Golf Cart Batteries to Lithium LiFePO4 | Eco Worthy 100Ah

We do an affordable lithium iron phosphate battery upgrade for a 36V EZGO golf cart. We remove and clean the old lead acid corrosion and build a wood platform for new batteries.
To preserve and extend the life of the new batteries, we install a balancer to equalize the charge. For the 12V electronics, we install a 36V to 12V step down.
For charging, we do an onboard charger with a new 120V outlet to allow any extension cord to charge the cart anywhere we go.

I just did the same change over on a 2004 Ezgo TXT. Exactly the same batteries. My 36/12 converter is switched on with a key-on relay since standby currenet is 1/4 Amp. I didn't put in a balancer since I charge each 12v battery separately. Works fine, 300 lbs lighter.

You need the balancer if charging separately. It’s important for all batteries to have same voltage due to resistance. Imbalance will prematurely kill batteries.

5/31/24. I did the same install and just bought the same balancer that you used. It doesn't say anything about using only 3 ports or anything about 36 volts ?

@MrGeezer101 that’s how they work. Hook it up yo each battery and it will balance the charge.

@@TunerwithKids Hook the leads up in sequence starting at one end, the 4th set of leads stays unconnected if you only have 3 batteries.

It’s fast and constant 13Mph. I get about 40 miles per charge. It does 5% drain per round trip, 2 miles to kids school.

Could you speak about the Florida infrastructure and culture for golf carts? It's a curiosity to those of us who don't use these outside of a golf course. What's a typical week of use?

I use it to drop and pick up kids from school. So I do about 5 miles a day (2 round trips). The bumper to bumper traffic is crazy so this saves so much time.

Great video, I'm just curious... the battery charger had a D plug, could you have used that instead of changing to the connection you installed? I'm guessing you did that to have the flexibility to charge anywhere? My EZGO has a D connection outlet, I'd prefer to find a lifep04 charger with a D plug but I've not seen one except for possibly this one.

Yea for charging anywhere. I already had to use it since I left the cart for 2 weeks and the bratty drained but the meter wasn’t reading accurately. I had to charge a mile from house using my car inverter to 120v.

That balancer does make a slight whine but nothing that people make a fuss about. It’s the balancer working and transferring juice between batteries.

I am doing a swap on a 48 volt Yamaha golf cart with the exact same batteries. I've already purchased the batteries but upon doing more research it looks like the max 100 amps continuous may not be enough. just wondering if you had any problems with the BMS over current triggering and if so how do you reset.thank you for your time

You won’t hit 100amps. Even when I have a heave load, it’s like 65A max for like 2 seconds. At 48V, your amps will be less for the same power.

@@TunerwithKids very nice glad to hear that. one last thing have you had any issue with rain it's quite rainy where I live and I'm debating building an enclosure for the batteries. also what chart do you use for deciding the state of charge, the manual that came with the batteries 13.48-12.85 or the one on the manufacturers website 13.6-10.0. your time is greatly appreciated thank you

@greencactusgaming2101 it's sealed so water is not issue. I build that surround and it keeps water out. I use a shunt meter to track battery percentage.

Hi, ty for the video. I gotta ask about the voltage converter.... ive been seeing viewers make comments that the converter will drain your batteries. That confuses me actually, i run an ezgo txt and i have a pull toggle switch to turn the lights On and Off. I figured no power was being used if my lights weren't turned on, am i overlooking something or am i overthinking this lol? Ive seen viewers say you gotta put a voltage converter in and connecting it to your key switch. Thanks

Physic says if electrons aren't moving then it shouldn't drain. So with converter, unless something is pulling amps, it shouldn't drain. The balancer does actively move charge between cells so it will drain some charge.

The voltage converter draws about 1/4 amp doing nothing, so it will drain the batteries eventually. So mine only gets energized with the key on through a 36volt relay.
