It's perfectly fine to stick to common faces and facial features to make it easier, but you definitely don't need to learn generalizations before variation, you should be learning variation from the start.

Yea, it talks about average proportions / beautiful proportions. The common mistake about drawing the mouth too low is only a mistake when done wrong. They actually used an example of it being used right, putting it on a pretty flat and wide jaw. Some people actually have faces like that, and it's also often used in more characterised art like comics, so I personally wouldn't say it's wrong.

You somehow manage to distil the complexity of your subject matter into its important and immediately graspable essence. So I know you said NOT to do studies of the Homer Simpson diamond mouth but honestly, drawing it has helped me a lot with understanding how the mouth sits on the face. I’ve always known about the muzzle but I could never really place it correctly in perspective until I started abstracting it the way you did for those drawings. So yea, don’t discredit your thought process there, as someone who always had trouble drawing mouths in perspective, I found it helpful and actually recommend others practice it!

The idea of helping artists draw from imagination is one I will get behind since I don't want to draw from a reference every doodle or piece, but I also want those drawings to be realistic and anatomically correct.
