Thank you for your words on doping and Sinner. Notwithstanding what will happen with CAS, even WADA accepts that it was not intentional doping. All that Sinner has shown since the case went public is that he needs no doping to win.

Fritz deserves so much credit for his achievements. In a million years I wouldn’t have thought he would finish ahead of Medvedev and Tsitsipas, but it did happen. I can now feel that he might steal a slam at some point (especially if Sinner actually got suspended periodically). You can argue quality wise Nole is still the top four player this year, but Taylor well deserves the year end number four. He may find himself not facing Sinner/Alcaraz/Nole before the AO final. As for those people who honestly think that even if a player deliberately took a performance enhancing substance, they would, after positive tests, being cleared, facing the court of public opinion, and then having their case appealed, continue to take it, despite frequent testing.. well I am afraid those people are just idiots. It's interesting that Sinner himself seems less affected by the current appeal in the public eye, than he was about the original hearing when it wasn't public knowledge. True he withdrew from Paris but anyone can get a tummy bug and it may have been precautionary. His ability to compartmentalise is impressive. Darren Cahill said recently that this whole experience has made him fearless - maybe we see that on the court too.

I partially agree with your analysis. The whole point here is that 🥕's game, right now, is so insanely fast, intense, error-free and, above all, CONSISTENT that nobody can keep up with it. It's just not human. Fritz probably played his best tennis. That's just not enough with this 🥕. The body language of players losing to 🥕doesn't really show anger or regret, but frustration and resignation, like they know there's nothing they could do. And this is confirmed by what they say in the post-match press conferences. The scariest thing is the 🥕is improving in real time. He's a deep learning machine who only gets better. Most likely, next year he'll be even better than this year. Considering that right now he's virtually unbeatable, we'll probably see an orange dominance in the next future
@al1976-v7mАй бұрын
Great analysis. Allow me to add my 2 cents about the leaping backhand: the reason we don't see this on any high backhand is because it's quite difficult to time, and - as you mentioned - doesn't necessarily add power. On the (body) second (kick) serve return however, it is almost a pre-planned move as Jannik knows exactly what speed and trajectory to expect. So the leap is ideal, especially because a body serve normally forces you to move AWAY from the ball and thus give up power. So in this case the leap does add power and enables him to immediately neutralize the serve and get in the rallye on even terms.

Before Sinner, only Lendl in 1986 had managed to win all the matches without losing a single set, with the difference that Sinner conceded a maximum of 4 games in all the sets while Lendl won a couple 7 to 5
@krosewallАй бұрын
Lendl only played one 7-5 set that year (the only set in the tournament in which he was broken - his first match vs Gomez. he didn't face a break point in any of the other matches). Also he beat 4 hall of fame players at that event(Becker, Edberg, Wilander, Noah). Becker is widely considered one of the best indoor match players of all time and had won 3 straight titles, and 21 straight matches going into the final(including a final set bagel over Lendl at the Sydney Indoors). So it was pretty shocking that Lendl beat Becker in 3 straight sets and faced no break points(no service game even went to deuce). It was probably the best week of his career(also he played matches every day, the YEC was played in shorter amount of days back then)

True. I found an interesting article online by USTA coaches evaluating Taylor's game some years ago, where they diagnose that his strokes are a bit old school in that they're "all arm" and not using the body properly. If you read that verdict it's actually really inpressive how far he's come this year. His coach Michael Russell and his influencer girlfriend really managed to get the max out of him. Being seeded 4th at the Aussie Open will give him a good shot at another potential deep run.

I think no one in the tennis world disputes the claim that Sinner's serve is his weakest core attribute. But the stats mentioned in your podcast do not say much. The point is not whether he significantly improved 1st serve percentage or speed after changing his technique. The most visible improvement that separates his current serve performance from two years ago is the fact that he can serve big when it matters. In pressure points or when defending break points. His serve used to break easily in those situations, now it's become a huge weapon. And yes, it's not as consistent as it should be yet, but that doesn't matter too much. I feel like you've missed the point entirely there.

Hi Gill, when you talk about the Fritz - Zverev matchup you left out some factors: Wimbledon. Zverev had a knee injury which happened the match before Norrie. he was playing on one leg basically and struggling from set 3 on. US Open: Zverev was not well physically. Not sure if you know, but he has had lung issues later diagnosed as pneumonia since probably Hamburg. Laver Cup: you excluded it, but Zverev was really sick there, in hospital a few days before. So in all of their last matches, Zverev was not well. Might as well be mental, but it certainly did not start out that way. Why are you not including this info in your analysis?

Tennis commentators and analysts have tremendous recency bias and grossly exaggerating Sinner's domineering performance this year on hard courts as the best season ever in history. No way this can favourably compare with 2011 performance quantitatively and qualitatively when Novak beat Nadal and Federer to win most of his tournaments. He won three slams that year, beat Nadal six times consecutively in all major tournaments, had a 10-1 H2H against Fedal, won sunshine doubles and was almost unbeatable that year. Even 2006 season of Federer pales into insignificance compared to Novak's feat because Novak achieved that feat breaking the hegemony of two of the all time Great players. That was the starting point of his dominance in a majestic way which extended for more than a decade except for a brief interregnum when he lapsed into an elbow injury between 2017 to early 2018.

And honestly, Jannik's rise last ~12 months was just astonishing. I get that at the age of 23 a lot of guys start to enter their prime, but again, the difference between Jannik 20 months ago and like 6 months ago...seemingly overnight went from the guy who was vomiting and had kinda physical problems, winning 1 masters - to being an absolute machine. Faster, stronger, more consistent, everything. Again, seemingly overnight. It's just feels a bit weird to me. Anyway, i was giving him benefit of the doubt and I guess i will continue doing so. And his tennis truly was immaculate this year. It's just that it feels kinda weird to me, can't help it.

Agree. I am a bit puzzled that Gill is totally not mentioning it. Just raving about his dominance and casually ignoring the fact that this guy had two positive doping tests, with a substance also used as masking agent - and that he has presented the silliest story of how it happened, and that the whole thing was covered up for months. Any normal person not too smitten with the tennis world would get sceptical.

Guys, just read the 50 pages PUBLISHED verdict and read the rules. He wasn't allowed to talk about it until the process was over, that is the rule, not a choice. Everyone, even the WADA, has ruled out doping, because the ammount of substance was so small, it was riddicolous and in no way it helped with his performance (doctors specialized said this, not some random people). He never refused to answer questions since it came out and he was allowed to talk about it. How can it be shady when everything is written black and white. The appeal from WADA is only for neglingence (should have checked more what his team was doing), they also ruled out doping, I think it's time to stop with this nonsense about unclearness. 😅😅😅😅

Yes, Sinner is a great player. Is he doping now? Probably not. Doesn’t change the fact he got preferential treatment in his failed tests. His story/alibi is still ridiculous and unbelievable. No way his team could be that stupid. I think all anyone wants is a fair playing field for all. Until his failed tests are addressed the cloud will remain.

The ATP is a snooze fest. I despise Taylor Fritz with a passion. No mentality. All of the tools. But will never get over the hump against these high end players. I pray Alcaraz stays healthy and starts a family like Fed and Novak did so he can fullyindulge in tennis and dominate. I refuse to watch Sinner mollywhop everybody.

L take. Fritz literally does not have the tools to beat Sinner, his forehand is worse, his backhand is worse, his movement is worse, his touch is worse, only his serve is better. It's actually quite incredible he managed to reach this level and if you look at the Zverev match you can see he was more clutch and better mentally. And you can refuse to watch Sinner destroy everyone because he is simply the best right now and hits really big, but good luck with that and I don't really understand why you wouldn't want to as he is a nice guy and plays amazing tennis.

Gil, why are you not mentioning the doping affair, when you praise Sinner achievements? Are you seriously just ignoring this? Do you not think it is the weirdest coincidence that he goes on the crazy run in the year where he also had two positive doping tests? Disappointed at your lack of objctivity and sucking up to Sinner fans.
@claginiАй бұрын
Because there is a verdict that you can read, that clearly says that it wasn't doping and even WADA did non appeal it (the appeal is just about the fact that WADA believes he should have checked more his team, not the substance part), bacause it's a scientific data. I trust more indipendent organisms specialized in this and their verdict based on science, than who said by random people.

Tennis fans/podcasters are some of the most gullible people ever if they believe Sinners "my trainer bought cream in italy with a "doping" sign on it and brought it to the US in case someone cuts their finger and oops my physio then cut his finger and treated it for a week with a cream with a well known prohibited substance and he massaged my crusty open wounds skin with his open wound and when I got my positive result I immediately knew why that must be despite not questioning before if he had used cream on his finger" story. Are you people seriously so naive? You too, Gill?
@lsb9073Ай бұрын
Bcos the amount found in both tests was compatible with contamination by a tiny bit of cream as like from a cut on someone else's finger, and not at all compatible with PED abuse. Simples.
@TheFlowMindАй бұрын
Read the sentence. It’s not that difficult 😂
@francescojsbАй бұрын
In fact, all the judges of the independent tribunal who acquitted Sinner without guilt or negligence are naive, and Wada is also naive, having appealed only to assign him negligence, accepting that it was only an accidental contamination. On the other hand, all the haters frustrated with envy who bark at Sinner believe they are smart.
