@@XinthoseAnd, 1 year after your post, babies are still murdered each and every day. All they ‘say’ has been changed is late term, but they still do it daily. You can watch many street preachers stand in front of these places all over the country and no laws have stopped women from going in and murdering their baby. To overturn a law would be to ban it completely, and anyone that does it, be put in prison for murder.

Although this message is extremely powerful and convicting, I would argue John Edwards other sermon titled "They that are in hell are in despair" is even more sobering. Hell is such a terrifying reality and it is plain everyday many people are lifting their eyes in hell for there never to be an end to their suffering and despair. That's terrifying beyond words, knowing there will never be an end. The reality of hell demonstrates how wretched we are compared to an almighty, all powerful, thrice holy God! If we look at the world today, there are earthquakes, famines and wars going on, I think this shows us how far removed God is, but God hasn't completed withdrawn himself. The pleasures and good we experience every day is mercy, grace, patience, and love. But God warns us that His spirit will not always strive with man. I pray anybody reading this will wake up and accept Jesus Christ, the author of salvation. There is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved. Now is the appointed time, now is the day of salvation. You are not guaranteed tomorrow, nor even the next hour. Every second we live is an opportunity to serve God and not flesh.

There was a time when I could see people's lostness all about them. Every time I went to the store, everyone I saw who wasn't saved. There were so very many of them! This fall I'm going to give a class on the Fear of the Lord for the ladies at my church. Even bringing the concept up was a bit startling for our pastor. God is working to stir some of us up to speak out.

I have not been a Christian for a very long time now, but I still find this sermon impressive. Obviously, one today can raise many objections to such merciless fire and brimstone theology, but to what end? Let us not diminish such a great work simply because we disagree with it; rather, let us appreciate it for what it is, in the context of its own time and place.

***** Heidi, I mean no disrespect to you at all, but your comment above, "No born-again Christian would turn away from faith", can be dangerously complacent. There are many ways a sincerely born-again Christian can be tempted into returning to worldly ways. God gave us a wonderful gift called freedom of choice, and it doesn't change when we accept Christ as our savior. All people, including Christians, are subject to the same temptations. Being saved, or born again, doesn't end there. We must continue to grow in Christ everyday. Our protection against worldly temptations comes from immersing ourselves in God's Word, the Bible, by reading it, and coming to an understanding of Who God is, and what He wants us to do. We are God's "work-in-progress" until the day Jesus comes for us, and it our job to keep our focus on God until then...to learn from Him...and to gain spiritual strength from His Word. It's so simple to keep our faith, yet so hard for so many of us to do, no matter how sincere we are. The Book of Hebrews explains God's nature in a way that no other single book in the Bible does. It explains what Jesus has done for us after His Ascension, and how it applies in our lives. In reading this book, I found that even the most sincere, born-again Christians need help in persevering in their faith -- that no one is exempt from temptation. It is a difficult book to understand at first, but there are many commentaries which can give a fuller understanding of it. There is a book called "Exploring the Book of Hebrews, A Devotional Commentary", by George Knight, which will give you a much greater vision of God.

The Lord Jesus Christ has delivered me from drug addiction, homelessness, abusive relationships, evil spirits (yes they're real) , sexual immorality, swearing, lying, stealing, laziness.. and even more. I give all the glory to Him. All praise and worship belong to God. He is real. He is bigger than any problem you face. He will meet you where you are at. Even right now. (Romans 10:13) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Currently I'm experiencing a demonic attack. But I am standing on The Word of God which says I have authority over devils and we are commanded by Christ Jesus to drive/cast them out. So I'm will continue to drive them out in The Name of Jesus Christ. Friends I implore you to do the same. The devil doesn't want us thinking it's real. We have authority over it! All of them. Keep strong in The Lord. Jesus Christ is LORD to the glory of God The Father. I bless every reader of this comment in The Name of Jesus Christ.

I don't think this sermon comes across as damning at all. Who wouldn't want to be warned? If the top of the stove is still hot, wouldn't you want someone to tell you? If a snake was within striking distance, wouldn't you want to know? That is love, not wrath.

I see comments below about the hellfire and brimstone preaching style here, and perhaps Jonathan Edwards did learn towards that type of message. But the true message he is conveying here should not be overlooked, that you must know, in your heart, where you stand in God's kingdom; to ignore it would be eternal regret. Being baptised doesn't mean being saved; attending church doesn't mean that you're are a true christian. Serving God doesn't mean that you're living a life that is Christlike. Serving not with your heart, but to show others how "good" you are and what a "good Christian" you are, is merely serving for your own good and not for the benefits of others. God's always knows your heart, even when you don't. It is essential for everyone to examine their own hearts and motives; this is mandatory for your own salvation. The alternative brings us to the objection some people commented on to this "style" sermon -- its "Hellfire and Brimstone" style. There are many ways to define "hell" -- Hell is created by man right here on earth, and to suffer from your own sins, would truly be like fire and brimstone in your heart. It helped me to visualize the torment a sinner would feel when, on the day of final judgement, he/she realizes what he/she have lost by not examining their hearts very carefully while still alive and able to do something about it. The regret and pain they would endure at the realization of their loss of God's kingdom would indeed by like a fire consuming them. This was an awesome sermon which applies as much to these days and times as it did when it was originally. Open your hearts and minds, and maybe you will see his message.

I think many people who know Edward's work disagree with Ralph. This sermon is a good representation of Edward's preaching style. He may have also delivered more uplifting stuff but he is well known for preaching Hellfire.

+Dirk Stabins, Edwards was an expository preacher, meaning that he typically taught and preached verse-by-verse. Unlike this portrayal of him in the video, he was actually soft spoken. There was much more to Edward's works than this one topic, so I disagree. I would also argue that this type of preaching was common among Puritans. Speaking on hell and judgement was not unusual or taboo. If they arrived to a place in Scripture that spoke on judgement and hellfire, they would speak on it also. It's the same for any other biblical topic.

Vaccination wasn't until later, in the 1700's they would grind up dried scabs and rub it into a cut to "innoculate" as they would call it.

Hey Larren, Christ death wasn't for them. (the lost) it was for those who would believe on him for salvation. And sir, the soul is eternal. For good or bad. And, God will wipe every tear from their eyes. and there will be no more death or sorrow..etc. God does this. in Heaven. Sinners won't be near God. They want nothing to do with him! read Revelation..look at all the punishment sent down and suffered, and yet, (read on) still they would not repent. Nope, Eternity is just that. Eternal. Just because we can't conceive of it, doesn't make it not true. God can not lie.

Many people don't like sermons like this. Of course the sinful: " Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God." - I Corinthians 6:9-10 Schools, as the Pastor mentioned, try to degrade Jonathan Edwards. But, what I find most surprising are "CHRISTIANS" and "REPUBLICANS" and "CONSERVATIVES" who don't like this sermon, the theology behind it. These people seem fake to me, because in the end, I always say: they love liberty (equality, inclusion, etc.) more than they hate sin.

The religious word "sin" hurts many humans. If we replaced the religious word "sin," with the non-religious word "behavior," it would keep us grounded. Humans would no longer believe that a god existed that was spying and judging their every move and thought. I suggest that we should be taught as children that we are whole, just as we are, and that, concerning how we treat others, the onus is on us.

What we believe does not matter. It is what God says that matter. Our lives are nothing but vapor that appears for a little while and it is gone. We should all repent and turn to Jesus Christ for the saving of our souls.

@@eddiefrimpong5136 If what you believe does not matter, then if you don't believe in Jesus, it should not matter. I understand your confusion. I spent until 70 years of my life being confused by the double-talk of religious teachings. For instance, within theology ... if a god gave humans free will ... then he would go against his own promise if he harshly judges humans for using their free will. God his self would be a double-talker. You will spot the lies, as did I, but only if and when you are ready, and "willing."

@@junevandermark952 Love is only possible when there is free will. The Lord however shows you what is good for you. That is to put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Punishment awaits every disobedience of man. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.

Only those who believe in such a horrible god would want to be saved from its wrath. Religion is not good for you.
