Today we are going to talk about the most common ENT disease, which is acute sinusitis but before that, we will know what are sinus.
The sinuses are small, air-filled cavities behind your cheekbones and forehead. The mucus produced by the sinuses usually drains into your nose through small channels. In sinusitis, these channels become blocked because the sinus linings are inflamed (swollen). Acute sinusitis is most often caused by the common cold. Signs and symptoms may include a blocked and stuffy (congested) nose, which may block your sinuses and prevent drainage of mucus. Acute sinusitis is most often caused by the common cold, which is an infection with a virus. Initially, they see symptoms for 7 days, chronic sinusitis is when these symptoms persist for months.
The common symptoms of Acute sinusitis are - Nasal inflammation, Thick, discolored discharge from the nose (runny nose), Drainage down the back of the throat (postnasal drainage), Blocked or stuffy (congested) nose causing difficulty breathing through your nose, Pain, tenderness and swelling around your eyes, cheeks, nose or forehead.
Acute sinusitis is usually diagnosed by discussing all of your symptoms and medical history with your doctor. In a physical exam or endoscopy, your doctor will look at the ears, nose, and throat to check for any blockage, swelling, and drainage. In the other method, the doctor does the CT scan. Nowadays doctor uses CT scan which is more preferable for chronic sinusitis. Initially, we try to cure patients medically. To cure the patient without any operation we ask them to complete an antibiotic course of five to seven days. Secondly, we give them nasal decongestants. if the symptoms still persist and patient doesn't respond to medications then we do surgery. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is standard surgery for chronic sinus problems that keep you from breathing with ease. Healthcare providers perform this surgery to treat chronic sinusitis and to remove nasal polyps.
If you or your known have any of the above symptoms you should consult a doctor as early as possible.
