I am late to the party watching this 2 years after it first came out. What an absolute beautiful car with brilliant design features inside and out. Many thanks Sion for an excellent video..

Wonderful car. It's really a classic that has always stood out and was always around, even when I was a kid, 40 odd years ago.

Lovely video of my favourite car, my uncle had a white one which he bought when stationed in Germany. I can still remember the journey and the space age looks brilliant.

Great video on a wonderful vehicle. Really enjoyed it 👍😀Lovely that there was a guest appearance by the Ami meaning 2 quirky Citroëns in one video 😊

This is a superior design with a longitudinal mid-engine, with the gearbox in the front, driving the front wheels! Also with inboard disc brakes on the gearbox output. No other car can even come close to this brilliant construction!

When I was a little boy of 8 or 9 we lived next door to my mothers uncle Tommy. He drove a crane in a local nut and bolt works which was still owned by one man. I would come home from school and on some days his Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire would be parked outside uncle Tommy’s as he’d come to visit him. Except, one day, the Martians came calling. It had to be an extra terrestrial because they’d parked their bloody spaceship outside his house. Even now, 65 years later, the memory of that DS resting there is still as strong as ever, so much so that I’ve been a Citroen nut ever since. My daily driver is a CX, I’m sorry to say this but, it’s actually a better car for todays roads as it has no problem keeping pace with modern traffic, whereas the DS is a little agricultural with that old engine. Still, as the “original”, it’s fair to say that the DS deserves its place in the top 3 automotive icons of all time.

I had an early '70s LHD ID19B (badged as a D Special, grey with a white roof) and the column change on that was a doddle to use and is of the conventional pattern (1-3 up, 2-4-R down). My dad had a RHD D Super 5 (the same colour burgundy as the one in this video) and being column shift, the shift pattern on that was reversed/mirrored, so it was 5-3-1 on the top row and R-4-2 on the bottom row which took some getting used to as you had to remember 1st was nearest you in both cars. Mine had a parking brake pedal with release plunger instead of a handbrake (like the XM much later on) whereas the RHD one had the same style parking brake as the one in this video with the release lever on it, but for the right hand instead. If anything, compared to later Citroens I've owned (CX and XMs), the DS/ID has the much better and more comfortable suspension and ride as later HP Citroens seemed to get much firmer suspension - the XM felt more 'German' having the most solid feel to the suspension and seats compared to the DS/ID and the CX. While the XM was the most practical being a hatchback, it was my least favourite of the big Citroens as both XMs I had (both were 1990 models) were plagued with problems. I've yet to experience a C6, although I understand they're far too clever and complex for their own good (as was the XM) which only spells trouble.

Well done sion an excellent review of one of my favourite cars and probably the best car ever made that is a stunning example and well cared for I remember reading they wanted to use a futuristic engine in the DS and it was rejected by Michelin who owned Citroen and ironically the same happened with the CX they have never dated and look great now sixty years on and some design touches are common now proves how far Citroen were ahead of the curve

The ID/DS does not ever "roll over" by itself!

With base unit construction you can actually take all the body panels off and drive inside the base unit... That also explains the massive side sills you have to climb over to get in and out

The brake is called the "mushroom" button on the DS! And the brake valve on the ID is not the same as on the DS, which is much more advanced and regulates brake power front and rear, depending on the load and road conditions, etc.

Ideally, with the 'coolant' being so filthy, it would have made sense to back flush the heater matrix out too.
@jourwalis-887517 күн бұрын
The engine is fantastic and the car is not "under powered"! And it has nothing to do with the old Traction Avant engine! It was/is a totally new design from 1965, with short stroke, five bearing crank shaft and cross flow top, spark plugs in the center line, and much more. A totally modern motor for its time!

The DS was futuristic-looking when it came out in 1955 and is still futuristic looking today in 2023. Lovely to look at. Nice cabin. I would have liked to have seen the automatically cornering-adjusting headlights demonstrated. Idiotic United States regulations in the 1950's and 60's forced Citroen to send DS's with fixed-pointing headlights to the States. Does anyone know what the wind resistance quantity is for this motorcar, its coefficient of drag? And how does it compare to that of, say, a Toyota Prius, or a Honda Accord?
@jourwalis-887517 күн бұрын
First and foremost, the hub caps is not from an ID! It´s from a DS Pallas! The center armrest in the front seats also belongs to a DS Pallas!

Very nice. Not quite the base DS though. I've always wanted to see the 'Normale' version that's really stripped out and I think had the unmodified engine from the old Traction.
