Now I'm tempted to write a spy character who had lesbian parents and is asexual and still a strong independent woman. Not because of trauma, but because of growing up in a loving, stable household. She also knows how to set boundaries for herself and doesn't use her body to get what she wants. Also, she should have a platonic girlfriend. Not for any particular reason, I just think it would be cute.

The gross “How to creepily manipulate a woman into changing her entire personality to suit you” article did contain exactly three pieces of good advice(provided you ignore the horrifying context): “You can be a feminist and a girly-girl”, which is absolutely true; you can and should express yourself however you like, “Take your partner on dates relating to their hobbies”, which is a great way to try new things and show the person you’re dating that you care about their interests, and “Try to avoid phrases like bodacious ta-tas”, which is just solid life advice for every conceivable scenario.

I asked him what he meant exactly and his response was, “Women we’re not meant to parade their bodies around for all the world to see, they are to be clean, neat, and expecting of their husbands in order to bare children.” I asked him about the women who cannot get pregnant, he proceeded to tell me that those women are traitors in the eyes of the lord. That "how to cure a feminist" manual reminds me of one girl that was literally brainwashed this way into seeking an abusive relationships. Her ex was into "BDSM" (he called it that but it was nothing else than abusing a partner, he was just sexually aroused from beating women and called it BDSM) and over time taught her to just take it, told her he's doing it because he loves her. He was her first and her second was also an a*sehole like that, misogynist who wanted a woman that "knows her place" as a slave (not even a partner, but a slave). Then one of our mutual friends decided to help her get out of this relationship and she (already mentally f*cked up from her boyfriends) took him as her "knight in shinning armor." They weren't dating, tho she had seen it that way. She was constatly complaining about him, that he doesn't really care about her, because he's not shouting at her nor hitting her while he was just telling her daily that they're not a couple and that she has to go to a therapist. Since then she had a few other boyfriends who she either broke up with for not "loving her enough" (already wrote what that actually means) or who were abusing her. I remember her before all of that, she was this always positive tomboy who had more men as friends than women and now she's this broken, fragile punching bag that sees having male friends as cheating and looks like a drug addict (she even may be at this point, can't say that tho).

Thanks for putting «BDSM» in quotes and explaining that it wasn’t that at all. Real BDSM requires consent and mutual pleasure. All sex does. Unfortunately I think lack of sex education makes people develop veird ideas about sex, and then you have things like 50 Shades of Gray glorifying emotional abuse and «BDSM» as romantic. It’s dangerous. I’m afraid your friend won’t be the last to be victimized by people who exploit this lack of knowledge to abuse their partners. I hope she’ll be ok. Lets band together and get people educated to prevent further misery.

I just think gendering animals in that way is ridiculous. Yeah animals have a biological sex and it's fine to use pronouns for them depending on their sex, but I don't think human concepts of gender apply to animals. "Masculine" and "feminine" aren't really applicable to animals regardless of sex, but especially not entire species. A cat or dog can be male or female, but they're not "men/boys" or "women/girls" in the same way humans are. The whole cats are women bullshit is also usually only applied to domestic housecats, but never applied to big cats such as lions, tigers, cougars, cheetahs, and mountain lions because those cats are considered more "masculine" because they're strong. It's all bullshit. Modern human concepts of gender are already ridiculous enough as it is and don't really apply to all humans, but it's even more ridiculous when you involved other species in it.

Love Baby Soft had a tv commercial that featured a young blonde woman dressed in a frilly white dress. She is looking at the camera, while she is slowly licking a large lollipop. I saw this commercial in the 1970s and it made me feel queasy. I don’t know how to connect to KZbin, but it is on KZbin.

Ugh, baby groupie culture. The thorn on my side as someone who's interested in classic rock and its history. Many of the most iconic rock stars have participated in it, one way or another, and it's disgusting. I had once thought this ad was just a general 70s normalized terrible thing, but the way it's connected to groupies specifically made me realize it ran deeper than I had thought. It wasn't just about rock star fangirling, it had extended to marketing. Anyways, do you know any video essays specifically about the baby groupie culture? I really wanna watch a proper deep dive into it.

The one about "fixing a feminine" is disgusting. It has 3 good points: 1. U can be a feminist & dress like a girly girly which is true because u should be able to dress however u want without having someone trying to "fix" u. 2. Take ur date to places that they're interested based on their hobbies. 3. Don't use terms that ur date may find offensive. Otherwise it is manipulative trash that should never been seen as anything good because when ur date finds out that u have been pretend just to take them to bed & "fix" them they will dump u

I find it creepy how so many men want to seek out strong willed, intelligent women who want to be treated as equals and try to "cure" them and manipulate them into being submissive to them. These men could simply just leave feminists the fuck alone. Men who give and take this sort of advice are probably creepy, manipulative abusers on the down low.

That 70’s ad campaign about “innocence is sexy” was a reference to how popular CP was at the time. It was LEGAL and shown in THEATERS(there were theaters just for porn back then) until the late 1980’s. Most younger people don’t know this and most older people don’t want to admit it.

I like the idea of the fictional strong woman being super naive and sheltered. Had a pleasant childhood but is unprepared for the challenges. What makes her strong is the fact that she rises to the challenges and is prepared to learn and grow. Also kicks butt on the journey. You don't need exciting back stories. The most exciting things to happen to a character should be in the story itself.

You must move with the horse, in canter it's like your lower end rolls in a circle in the saddle. It can take some time to build up the strenght, but be patient. @11:20 This usually happens when the author doesn’t have much for the female character to do in the plot, yet they don’t want to just k1ll her off. Traditionally, male characters are active and female characters are more passive. Now that there’s a demand for more interesting female characters, authors still don’t know what to do to make them inspiring. Unless they’re the main character, she won’t get that much dialogue or character development. So the authors just emphasize a tragic past or traumatic event to show the audience how “strong” she is when they don’t have any tasks for her to over-come onscreen. 😂 Basically, what other people do to them is more interesting than what they actually do.

In Media Studdies we studied 1960's an add for soap that portrayed children's skin as desirable ("you want skin that feels soft... soft as and child's" + "To keep your skin as soft as a child's"). It managed to portray children, or their qualities "desirable" (which, eww), idealise youth and demonise ageing for women (because if women weren't beautiful for a cis male gaze what worth could you have?) which must have been a terrifying amount of pressure... and allowed men to tell women in the most condescending way what they want / should want. The first point about children is subtilely re-inferred though the choice and placement of colour. The mother is warning red lipstick (a symbol of sexuality still used in modern media) while the very young child is wrapped in a red blanket. Red's connotations are of love, sexuality and violence so making a link though the colour is an interesting choice yo say the least.

Though, now that I think about it, maybe it's because those kind of "love triangle" with a male at the center were replaced with harem fantasies? Also, yeah, I'm sick of authors being creeps with (too young) female characters. I feel called out. There was a time where I thought it was hilarious that a horse girl would like a huge, muscular animal between her legs, but in retrospect the comparison to a man is extremely abstract. It doesn't help that when most people want to emphasize the size of a penis by comparing him to an animal, that animal is almost always a horse. Double called out: I did come up with a character idea of a badass woman who had rape in her backstory. Though I never imagined it would have made her strong, but it was supposed to be the straw that turned the camel from pro-establishment to violently anti-establishment. I felt so clever to imagine that she could get over the rape itself, but the fact that THE SYSTEM (well specifically her commanding officer) sided with the rapist and didn't really help her was what made her want to leave the military and enter the criminal underground. I'm really starting to get the impression that most women or people from marginalized groups would prefer to see science fiction and fantasy worlds where bigotry is just plain absent. Where even the most psychopathic bad guy is incapable of partner abuse. Even an escapist fantasy where you can defeat bigotry isn't as attractive as an escapist fantasy where it is ignored apparently.
@spac3chicken918
@spac3chicken918 Жыл бұрын
You can still write your character, its just frustrating when so many female characters have a cookie-cutter abuse background to be strong while men are just strong by default. Are you surprised marginalised people don't want to read about bigotry in a fictional/escapist setting? It sucks to deal with in real life so I doubt many people are excited to go through it when it's supposed to be an escapist fantasy. Even so, its not that we want all fictional bigotry to disappear and want all villains to not be abusive, its that so many female characters have their entire personality tied to being a victim rather than them being a person first as well as a victim second.
@JasminMiettunen
@JasminMiettunen Жыл бұрын
A rape story does limit your audience, as some people don’t want to read about it. I don’t. I do find the idea behind yours interesting, focusing on the system and rape culture that allowed it to happen. Just avoid the cliches, like rape=strong connection, strong woman hates men, and getting over it TOO easily. Even if you’re strong, it’s still traumatic. You could have her be raised in a good, stable household and grow into a strong, independent woman. She had a good upbringing, raised by a good mother and father, she's white and wealthy, obviously she's pro-establishment. Really focus on the fact she is a strong woman already, that’s why she goes to the military, because she’s strong mentally and physically to do well there, and wants to protect her country that’s been so good to her. Then when it happens, it doesn’t make her stronger, it doesn’t make her hate men because she knows there’s good men like her father, but starts hating the system that pushed her aside when she needed it. Then she goes to her family, female friends, gets therapy, etc. I hate when in stories strong independent women never have female friends. If you have to make all other women brainless, catty bitches to make your “not like other girls” character stand out, you’re a bad writer. (Side-eyeing Hollywood rn) Independent doesn’t mean lonely. She probably has to change her friends after going from the suburbs to criminal underground lmao, but it should be easy to insert other strong women into that setting. Maybe she could even radicalise a close childhood friend that tried to help her get justice. That would be amazing, actually. She goes to her best friend after it happens, her friend is infuriated, helps her seek justice, goes to every military court hearing or whatever with her, writes letters to the higher-ups after the case is dismissed, she's equally disillusioned by what happened. They go down the same rabbit hole, and remain friends throughout the story. No cattiness or jealousy a la Hollywood, or getting together sexually, just genuine friendship between two women. If you want the main character to be gay, no problem, but two women being genuine friends is just so sorely missing from media. Damn, if you don’t write the story I will lmao This could be such a good story. Just avoid the cliches, don’t describe the rape scene in detail and obviously have a trigger warning for it.

there is just such a plethora of media that portrays racism, sexism, and abuse. fiction of all kinds is absolutely saturated with suffering meant to make the stories relatable, but it can often serve only to alienate or depress for (in my opinion!) three main reasons: 1. our modern world is fucking miserable, and consuming media where all the same struggles we are actively burdened by today are present can be a drag. even a thousand years in the future or in a world of magic, women and minorities are being raped and enslaved. it makes it feel like everyone just assumes that kind of suffering is inevitable to the point they cant fathom a story without it. 2. the suffering often renders women into inactive tools for men. you may be familiar with the term 'manpain'. male leads are often treated like they cannot be emasculated or weak for any reason - but how do you make him interesting without giving up any vulnerability? just kill or rape a woman he cares about! wives, sisters, moms...whoever. a womans sorrows all stem from such violence...but so do a mans. it creates the feeling that women are just objects who receive, never actors who, well, *act*. 3. the people who write about such events are often men who have never been on the receiving end of them, and they end up being completely misinterpreted or outright ghastly. i cannot and will not ever relate to the romantic "charm" of being hounded by a relentless suitor until i give in, because that happened to me and it was scary. not cute, not romantic, just scary and miserable. and it only gets worse when touching on topics of rape, assault, abuse, sexualization, etc. i cannot count how many times ive read phrases along the lines of "she was sexy, and she knew it" - in reference to not just grown women but teenagers! this idea that any woman you find attractive is aware of and using her womanly wiles to seduce all men around her is nasty and gross. and yet it is all over fiction. the femme fatale who, from the very flowering of her womanhood, has been enjoying and manipulating men with her tits. meanwhile, every friend i had who got breasts at a young age wore exclusively baggy clothes and was terrified of going home alone, because men took their physical maturity as a sign of consent. obviously she WANTS to be catcalled and groped - she wouldnt be making me horny on purpose with that huge rack she intentionally grew herself otherwise! im sure there are exceptions or other reasons female readers would not enjoy these tropes, but thems my two cents.

About the spy thing, there's an anime called Patalliro, where there's a seductive spy who turned out like that after being abused, but he is a man, and almost all characters are gay men, and it's quite refreshing to see men being shitty to only men

As a writer I've actually thought a lot about how to write female character's backstories in a way that isn't just "I suffered at the hands of a man and have grown into a strong, confident, and sexy woman because of it." Like I am a girl, but since backsories like that are so prevelant, sometimes I end up letting elements of that slip in without me really noticing. The current character I'm working on has suffered in the past mostly because of her mom and her society's expectations of women (specifically noble woman). It's kind of complicated and I don't want to get into specifics now but I'm trying to have the main suffering being caused by her mother forcing societal standards onto her. It's set in a future, post appocalypse, sci-fi setting (it's a mecha setting and was inspired by things like 86, Gundam, etc) so the society is different and that's also something I've done a lot of work trying to develop in a non-male centric way. It's still a work in progress but I'm happy with the direction it's going.

This is like a breath of fresh air from the video I just came from. It was amazing story about a mother standing up to the school her child goes to because her child was being bullied for being non binary. Yet the comment section was full of comments like "no mom YOU are the problem" "There are only two genders, can't believe this mom would support such nonsense" I hadn't seen such things in a while so I thought we had finally moved on as a society. Guess I was wrong :/

17:57 I think I can explain this one. It's something I had to think about when I myself wound up exploring cnc. Our society both demands teenage girls cater to male appetites in dress and horrifically shames them for ever experiencing or acting on sexuality. Young girls are expected to be utterly mature and enticing while also being innocent and uninterested in sex. Because of this, it's really difficult for a lot of teenage girls to allow themselves to process their awakening sexuality. Books that have dub-con and non-con elements allow the girl to live vicariously through the MC and experience the excitement and adventure of a romance while never having to cross the boundary of 'wanting it' when wanting sex is considered so utterly stigmatizing and can ruin your social life. The man does all the work but "has a heart of gold" while the girl can say she "tried" to be good and blame him for anything shameful. Of course, this translates to young girls being more vulnerable to predation and abuse, because the things their partner is doing to them aren't ''that bad'' and he truly loves them deep down. The fairy-tale romance they envisioned was cultivated by a society that wants to glorify abuse. It's honestly just sad.

9:45 it gets worse once you realise Sasha Pieterse was 13 when she got the role, making her the youngest in the whole cast, as she wasn't even the same age as her character. Lucy Hale and Ashley Benson were 20, Shay Mitchell was 23 and Troian Bellisario was 24. I can't get out of my head that they actually had a 13 year old kiss a 23 year old. Creeps me out. Edit: additional information, correction of data and corrected Sasha's surname.

My dogs have a proper triangle, but it’s more of a love/hate type of thing. Our middle dog, a three year old female Australian Cattle Dog is obsessed with our oldest dog. He is 13 and a Border Collie and Australian Shepherd mix, he tolerates her but really likes to mess with youngest dog. The youngest dog is a 2 year old Miniature Goldendoodle but he wants the middle dog’s attention but she can’t stand him.

Bro, the whole “women only like riding horses because it’s sexually stimulating” argument has been around a looooong time. A similar complaint was made by men during the rise of bicycle availability. It boils down to “I hate the idea of women being capable of traveling on their own and getting jobs with a commute, so I’m going to attach it to something our society considers shameful. That’ll teach those women liberationists >:)”

Crazy idea for a super hero story: Woman gets super powers because she accidentally gets stuck in a plot hole (why not it's as good as any other reason people get super powers) and then goes out to fight crime... because it's the right thing to do. No deep seated trauma, no being a rape victim and heck both parents alive and completely healthy loving parents she just feels that she has a moral obligation to use the abilities she gained to make the world a better place... crazy isn't it?
