Jean Redpath was a fabulous singer and sang everything from the big ballads like this one to Robert Burns. I learned this version from John Longstaff and sang it for years, but what a treat to hear Jean Redpath sing it. Thanks for posting.

Very nicely done. I've always enjoyed Jean Redpath's singing.

Pinz if you don't like to hear a fine traditional song, why complain?!

This is the one! Simply looking for a credibly authentic rendition. Very good English singers, who are brilliant guitarists, do fine versions, but make it sound like the guitar is ok for tradtional songs. 1 or 2 other tunes i can't quite get hold of. Ewan MacColl did this one - a bit idiosyncratic, but Jean Redpath is the only one i want to really listen to, to learn the song - getting beyond just words and tune. (But both lacking verses)

Lain Oughted: see if you can find John Longstaff's variant. Same tune and as beautiful as Jean's. Surely do miss her.

Her voice is so powerful, that when recorded for YT it has overpowered the system. Thus we get the distortion that ruins this. SAD.

That's bullshit. They had mechanical problems,,,,nothing to do with her voice.

With all due respect to her ladyship; I prefer a straight recitation. Us yanks can barely handle the printed word, nevermind the singsong.
