So, at least from what I can tell from watching this, Mr. Stewart and Mr. Frakes aren't really playing their characters when they're bantering back and forth on Picard. They're just being themselves and I am totally here for it.

This is one of my favorite examples of strong male role models we had growing up in the late 80s and early 90s. Commander Riker could have clearly and easily kicked Picards *ss and he could have had his own command and ship if he wanted it, but there was such great respect for the captains chair and for the role of being the absolute best right hand man...he showed us you could take pride and earn respect from others by being the best at supporting someone that may be getting all the glory and all the credit. The real honor came from being loyal. He was always patient and humble. At the same time, Picard never abused his authority and treated Riker with dignity and respect in return and allowed for a friendship to grow and acknowledged how important he was. I never forgot that dynamic. The take aways for me are this. 1. Everyone doesn't get to be captain and yet there's still a reason to take pride in your role, no matter what it is currently. 2. When you do become captain, surround yourself with the best number 1 possible, treat them with dignity and respect and you'll always succeed. 3. Good men show restraint when they are bigger and stronger and also when they are in a leadership role. In both cases being an a hole, or a jerk, or a bully is possible, but it's ugly and doesn't work nearly as well as taking pride in what you do, giving your absolute best and showing respect to those around you. Plus they both always got the hot girl they wanted, almost never lost a fight and lived happily ever after 😂😂😂

It's cool to see how Frakes turned the character of Riker into a reflection of himself. The Riker we saw in Picard was older and much more secure in command, as Frakes became in real life as a very capable director. Riker's authority flows naturally from Frakes, as does his humour, which made Riker the coolest and most authentic character in Picard; yes, even more than Picard himself. His close relationship with Patrick Stewart shines through when both are in character, which is why their scenes together were my favourite.

The Gurney Halleck story struck a chord with me, because I actually hated the Dune movie desperately -- I saw it in a theater and hated every second, but I sat through the whole thing to get to the end credits and find out who played Gurney Halleck because this movie sucks but damn, that guy was GREAT! Who the h*ll is he?! And I saw the name and memorized it. Patrick Stewart! I don't know who he is, but he was great. And then a few years later, the friend I had seen that crappy Dune movie with (a fellow Trek fan) called me on the phone in my dorm room and told me that I was going to love the new Star Trek show because "You know who the captain is? Remember that guy you liked so much in Dune?" "Patrick Stewart?! OMG he's f*cking awesome!" And he was. 🙂
