I had a Himalayan cat that when she was just a very small kitten, I took her to the groomer. She went every month and she was the Only cat they would groom. They trained her from 5 weeks old until she passed away. She was strictly an indoor cat. The rule in my house was that whosever she was sitting on, one of them was required to brush her while watching television. Perfect cat.

I remember the struggles getting my cat to even get near a carrier..then watching these cats at the groomer that are like: "What? You want me to leave this wonderful carrier? I will have you know that carrier is my ancestral home!"

My cats refuse to get in the carrier to go to the vet, then refuse to leave it at the vet and can't wait to get back in
@hannajung7512
@hannajung7512 Жыл бұрын
There is a pretty simple trick: let the carrier be part of your living space and put some treats in it for the cats to find every now and then. They quickly will start to see the carrier as a nice place to be. and try if you can avoid it to force them into the carrier, instead coax them into it with some treats and then close it while they are munching on it. Especially when the cat freaks out in the carrier make a step by step training, close it just for a second and open it right away, then a bit longer, then some minutes and lift it up ... and so on... allways try to catch the moment were they start to get nervous and then let them out. This way they learn that they will not be locked in forever, that you will let them out again. you might never have them happy in the carrier, but at least they will not start to freak out befor they are even in it

my heart just melted seeing this stately old fellow with his cloudy eyes. the first cat i ever adopted passed away last year. he was already well into adulthood when i got him and i had him for a decade. he was this old and world-weary by the end of it. i was bathing him and brushing him regularly too and he was so sweet and tolerant. the only time he ever voiced a complaint was when i had to cut his nails, and even then it was just a resigned grumble.

For my Himalayan cat I preferred the lion cut as she got older. Would have the groomer do it in the late spring and my cat was more comfortable in the summer heat, as well as fewer hair balls and she was better able to clean herself. By the fall enough of the coat had grown back for her comfort during the winter. Plus always thought she looked super sporting the lion cut! You made Ollivander look great!

what a lovely old man :) We have a 10-year-old cats who doesn't take care of her coat at all, we bathe and wash her but she can't handle brushing either, so she gets the lion cut 3 times a year. She is 100 times happier now, she even likes her little sweaters in winter. She while she might look "prettier" with her long coat, the lion cut helps her itchy skin (allergies to everything) and makes her happy. That is all that matters.

Do you find that shaving actually helps with allergies? I have a poor little girl who isn't even a year old who has severe allergies to the point of scratching herself silly. @freddiehansen7324
@freddiehansen7324 Жыл бұрын
@@Nikki_81 Yes, it has helped her a lot. Plus finding grain free food that she liked (which was way more difficult) If her skin is very itchy - be it from mosquito bites, or just being dry - I give her an oatmeal bath that helps (she isn't a fan but it does help). She can also keep herself clean when shaved. I brush her with a boar bristle brush when she allows it.

I have cared for elderly cats, am caring for two of them right now, both over 15 years old. A person's vanity should never outweigh the comfort and needs of a pet. Shaving a long-haired, matted, elderly cat can be a massive relief for the cat and should be considered first before the "prettiness" of the hair.

Awhhh…what a darling, old boy. It was like he half wanted a Spa day and half just thought: “I am way too old to tolerate this nonsense”. The owner sounds like an Excellent fur-Mom. I’m glad she gave him some pain meds prior to his appointment, and SUCH a good boy in the shower. Vanessa - as always, I think that was a good call - I’m sure Ollivander feels better and will be able to groom himself more easily. He looks quite a bit like one of my grand-kitties.

I have a 14 year old cat with severe arthritis. We're able to manage his pain with a dosage of adequan every 4 weeks and giving him cosequin joint supplements plus gabapentin daily. These are all fairly affordable and really do make a difference for an elderly cat or a cat with arthritis!

My cat is 23 and she's stopped grooming herself as well. She's short haired so I use waterless shampoo foam and I brush her everyday. I wish I could bathe her like normal but she absolutely does not tolerate it. She would benefit so much from a proper scrub and blow out like this! I hope Ollivander feels so much better after his groom today.

you might want to consider putting her on pain meds. she probably stopped grooming because her back hurts. Pain is often overlooked in cats because often the symptome is just reduced activity levels.

May I ask what brand of shampoo you use and how often you use it? My cat just turned 11 so when she gets to the point of not being able to groom herself I'll be using a waterless/ dry shampoo

@@shadowsinmymind9 I use the brand called Vet's Best, and I use their cat formula for waterless shampoo. For my cat I use it about every week and a half to two weeks. It's super easy to use, you just dispense the foam on your hands and rub it all over them and then brush them out. Having two people helps at first until they become more used to the process

I know you specialize in dogs, but I always greatly appreciate your cat videos! You do your best to balance their comfort with their needs. But some cats, like Ollivander here, are just low on the "kitty patience minutes" for some grooming tasks, as my vet would put it. Obvs some are worse than others and he's not really that bad except for the combing/armpit shaving. I'm glad his humans were able to bring him to you and that you're able to help.

Low on kitty patience? This was one of the most patient and gentle cats ever. Like she said in the video, he showed when he doesn't like something (probably cause it hurts) but even then he's super gentle and calm.
