I just thought of one that would be really cool, “the scientist makes preparations to examine the remains of the newly discovered pharaoh, imported all the way from Egypt for research. As he gently unwraps the mummy, he notices a smell identical to the dehydrated Cordyceps powder his wife mixes into smoothies, he brushes it off, and continues unwrapping the dried corpse infront of him, once all the bandages were removed, he goes for a coffee break. All of a sudden, the fire alarm goes off, and so do the sprinklers, and the building is evacuated, but it turns out some stupid kid from a field trip pulled the alarm as a joke, you rush back in to assess the water damage to the mummy, but when he goes into the room, the table is empty, but as the scientist will find out, the pop culture myth of a mummy’s curse was partly true, the Cordyceps fungus that pilots the pharaoh wakes up when once again when it is given moisture, that’s why the remains are dehydrated with salt, why they are placed within a Russian nesting doll of boxes, why they are housed in giant waterproof pyramids, those bandages weren’t to preserve the mummy, it was to give any unlucky grave robber the chance… To RUN!”

I love the idea that the “song” of the siren is actually a mimicry of someone, especially a child, crying for help. I’ve always thought it seemed a bit odd for sailors to be overcome with the beauty or allure of a siren’s song. But hearing a baby screaming is perhaps the one thing I truly believe could reliably overcome a person’s senses, override their logic, and dig into their most basic instincts. Plus, how horrifying would it be if the only way to be sure not to get lured by a siren was to risk abandoning a baby to die? Anyone who managed to ignore the call would live the rest of their days haunted, second-guessing themselves, wondering if maybe there really was a child lost in the waves that they left to die.

My grandfather, born in Italy, used to tell stories about how he once saw a strange creature while in a fishing boat in the mediterranean sea. He described the encounter as the most unsettling experience ever. During the night they began to hear some voices crying for help, or at least that's how it sounded to them. They quickly began looking for someone in the water, but couldn't find anyone. The sky was cloudy, it was very dark and cold. After some time they went inside the boat, tired, worried and confused. My grandpa stayed on deck for a while, as he couldn't shake the feeling that there was someone out there in the water. Or something. Eventually he began walking inside as well to warm up a little, and suddenly saw something with the corner of his eye, turn to his right, and there it was. The clouds had clear a little, enough for some moonlight to pass through, and in that silver light, about 30 metres from the boat he saw a feminine figure standing with her upper body in the water, gazing at him. Her skin seemed to shine, reflecting the moonlight with a light blue tint. Both stood in silence for a few seconds, and the figure suddenly banished, summerging back in the water in an instant, making no sound but allowing to see some fin fish as she went down. He never told that to his mates, but did not go fishing anymore. The next time he was at sea was to board a ship to America.

Regardless if it's true or not, people do sometimes get really confused about what they experience, to the point of believing that they've seen 'weird' things. In superstitious communities, in situation of social distress, they might even develop colective delusions. Even without the superstitions, you see people start to get obsessive about things that are not real or don't mean anything.

Ah, the uncanny valley, a response to protect yourself and others from either, drugged people, the mentally ill, or psycho/sociopaths. It commonly happens when proper emotional/situational facial ques are not met. Like a smile that lasts a little bit too long. Or a gaze that is just a little bit too strong. The uncanny valley could also be triggered, by people who have sexual disorders, such as, pedophiles, rapists, sadists, etc. It is commonly felt when nearby serial killers, and is typically that "Weirdo"/"Creepy" feeling. Though, some people still think it is because something predatory evolved alongside humans, and the apex predators such as, lions, bears, or primates, isn't so, and instead think that something evolved to mimic humans, which could be true. Though, there are other theories, such as it being a possible a possible adaptation against neandertals, either that, or other primate species, which is possible.

It’s terrifying how quickly such base instincts can overtake you. I’m in my home watching this video labeled as fiction, and yet the second I hear that “baby” something deeply primal takes over and I feel intense distress. There is no baby. I’m well aware there’s no baby. But it’s good to know that in case anyone or anything needs to lure me to my doom, my body is willing to override basic survival instincts in response to hearing a child cry. Not a bad strategy for ensuring the young survive, but your body has no way of knowing whether the baby is actually real or not. I’d bet that almost all of us would fall for that ploy.

I'm a bit late to this video but I have to take a moment to appreciate the audio of the siren call. I was imagining it vividly as I listened to the descriptions of the vocalization system, and really hoped there would be an audio of it, but feared I could be dissapointed with the expectations being so high. Absolutely not. That is one of the most unsettling things I have heard and I'm sure I would have had to take my earphones off when it got louder if it hadn't stopped. I'm watching this in broad daylight. Congratulations, you overcame the number 1 principle of horror and made something scarier than what the audience could imagine.

I can see Manticores being either a short of baboon with an uncannily flat face and quilled tail, or a large felid with shorter wide jaws, which combined with a mutation that gives their face a pale pinkish hue, can be mistaken for a grotesque human-like face, and such mutations may prompt them to being man-eaters due to how easily seen they'd be by their normal prey, they can def still ambush their normal prey items ofc (especially with their projectile quills flung at them), just the chances of success would be dwindled.

What would the animal ACTUALLY look in like in comparison to its Hollywood character? Does it actually feed off atomic energy, or something more? One theory that has always stuck with me is the theory that humans can’t just come up with imaginary things. People have to see the things to put objects together. All ideas have some truth to it. Some of it can be exaggerated but it has to be wrapped into truth in some form or fashion. I can’t remember the theory name but it’s definitely something that is extremely interesting to think about.

Another possibility for the siren call, with vocal cords like those, would be a genuinely disarming, soothing voice. I would say perhaps a siren would do both. The soothing song at one point, the mimicry that triggers the instinctual response (like the baby cry) at another time. It would depend on what the siren thinks will work best at the time it comes across potential prey.

According to the "canon" of this video the Siren doesn't think or "plan". But I still agree with you that such a creature would be using more than one mimicry. Possible as much as it picked up from its prey. So it might start to mimic the baby cry or whatever works most times and just move to another sound if the first doesn't succeed luring the prey nearer to them. So what you said, but not "Thinking what might work in this situation." but trial and error.

I really enjoyed this biology of sirens, I always wonder what a more realistic version would look like. A Good hybrid animal that would be great to explain the Biology would be the Griffin. I have drawn up what a realistic griffin would look like. The back region would elongate and due to reactivation of a old gene, would start growing back a tail, with the hind legs built similarity to the Mountain lion in order to run as well as fly in a Mountainous dessert region.

A helpful critique to take note of, the Mediterranean Sea as we know it today's only been around like, 5 million years, so Sirens and their ancestors may've came from somewhere else. And the upper humanoid half seems too out there for what amounts in terms of evolution as a blink of an eye, they can still def be a case of rapid evolution, tho. Maybe instead of the Mediterranean, the original sirens possibly use aggressive mimicry on coastal primates in Africa? Also, Sasquatch/Bigfoot and other elusive cryptic humanoid apes on your list? Can see Yeti having muzzles, giving a bear-like vibe the oldest reports/depictions had, and Yowie being sabertoothed.

They kinda are, they're humanoid due to them... well, being humans, and viral evolution's much faster than us multicellular organisms. Tho the Vamps having vestigial hearts is quite far out there too and worth critique. At least many victims of LPV actually often die from the transformation before it could complete. The flaw i pointed out with this Siren's more severe than such minor flaws.

Regardless, these series of videos is meant to be soft specevo, I think it's pretty clearly established. It's fine to point out the most unbelievable things, but it's not a standard that the videos are trying to follow.

May be right yeah, but i am mostly more-so having gripes with the local/origin point, the Mediterranean Sea should be just a preferred/highly favored region of the Sirens, but at least he did make mentioned they and Merfolk are reported worldwide and is fresh in the studies so corrections like that can be made in this setting he's building, he so far only dissected one dead specimen and heard but not properly seen a wild living one.

It seems that Sirens are to Mermaids what Dolphins are to Sharks. Species that may have similarities due to convergent evolution- or in the case of Sirens, aggressive mimicry that caused a sort of faux-convergence in response to challenges towards the hierarchy of species. Insofar as their relation- i believe it would not be so unrealistic to believe that merfolk and sirens grew such similar legend split in their behavioural changes. The vocalisations necessary for underwater signalling have similar roots in the basics of human language, so vocalisations between merfolk may be confused for Siren song. The difference being in the purpose and reaction. Merfolk may vocalise to communicate and flee when sailors approach- a natural response to their beginnings as the Siren’s prey, while the Sirens vocalise for the sole purpose of luring in victims.

There’s always something odd on islands like these. On the Hiawasse River in TN (i know i spelled that wrong) i was paddle boarding with my best friend we stopped on an island we never had time to adventure with very heavy foliage near Camp Cherokee. We get towards the center of the island and notice barely any animals or bugs on it besides small birds up higher, there was a HUMONGOUS multicolored spider on a tree trunk that hops off it and chased us we smashed it with a branch and left immediately because there’s no way that was the only one. never gone back and never have adventured that ambitiously in nature since. scary

XD Edit: I like how even though he states plainly that they hunt using aggressive mimicry, and it's clear that it's mimicking a lost, drowning child, you can still hear the gargle behind it, like it can't quite make the sounds do exactly as it wants. (Perhaps a young Siren still learning?) Or maybe that's just what it actually sounds like: I've never been near someone drowning, so I couldn't say. It's a nice touch, though: reminds us that what's making the sound isn't what it seems.
