Interesting. In Germany, we only have grid-powered sirens, the main difference is if they use compressed Air, an interrupted airflow or electricity (like a giant speaker). But Germany doesn't have remote areas like the US.

They are mostly for warning people to seek shelter when a tornado has "touched down" as we call it. Large portions of the American midwest and great plains are at risk every spring through late summer of tornados. I live north of Dayton Ohio and a few years ago the Dayton metropolitan area (which has over 800,000 people) had multiple tornados on the same day, 19 altogether, all within 24 hours. This was a very unusual storm but still we need the sirens to make sure people seek shelter because we have tornados every single year and in my adult life I cannot remember going through a single summer where I didn't experience at least one tornado warning for my county. We also have cell phone transmitted warnings and TV and radio broadcast interruptions along with the sirens. The sirens are obviously for people who may not be near a tv or radio and don't have their cell phone. They are still an important part of the severe weather warning system.

Yeah, a lot sirens can be ordered with that setup. They call that an "AC/DC" setup. Some systems can even be manually selected to operate from AC, DC, or AC w/ DC backup. But they are more expensive than the sirens that strictly run off battery power.

I wish they put them back in Australia. They were going off for days in Brisbane but they are now limited to certain buildings and not very loud. The air-raid ones were removed in the 60's. Now all we get are texts but they usually just give a disaster area warning which is hundreds of miles and not local enough. Where I live in Toowoomba we have nothing. Every person for themselves.
