I hope Sirui can expand the Aurora f/1.4 series by maintaining the 67mm filter size, rendering, design, and price.
@DustinAbbottTWI12 күн бұрын
I think you'll probably see that.
@acouragefann17 күн бұрын
I am a happy owner of the Sigma 85 but frankly, I very often find myself lowering contrast and adding haze in post because its resolving power just isn't all that flattering :'D Were I in the market for the first time, I feel the Sirui would suit my needs slightly better. Your comparisons and insights are, as usual, much appreciated - it's great that we as photographers get so many viable choices these days (and hopefully a 85mm f1.2 will be one of those in 2025)
@DustinAbbottTWI16 күн бұрын
I'm hoping that Viltrox brings out a LAB 85mm F1.2 this year. I do feel like a lens like that is still needed on Sony.

I was pursuing the sharpest lens possible in the past, only to punish myself retouching the flaws in post. Nowadays when I shoot portraits I shoot film, or use poor quality lenses like the Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8 and 80-200mm f/2.8.

Have noted the, usual, requests for Dustin to conduct an endless number of reviews! His reviews are largely unpaid and viewers should be grateful for what they are able to view for free.

That is usually the case!

Good review as always Dustin. I am definitely looking forward to the Viltrox 85mm f1.2 LAB as well. If price and performance are as competitive as the 135mm LAB, Viltrox might be the new go-to for prime lenses for me.
@DustinAbbottTWI12 күн бұрын
100%. I'm very eager to see the LAB 85mm
@chirsd66616 күн бұрын
I noticed in all the side by side comparisons after the chart test, the FOV of the Sirui is definitely wider than the Sigma, by about 4-5mm (guessing). If the comparison was made at identical FOV, the Sirui would likely show a slight advantage over the Sigma in the quality of background blur.
@frankfeng270116 күн бұрын
That is correct. Sigma is the one tighter than 85mm.
@DustinAbbottTWI16 күн бұрын
Not by 4-5mm, but certainly by 2mm. The Sigma is known to be a bit long.
@xFreyelis16 күн бұрын
Portrait-wise, I'm not actually looking at the sharpest one, but the one that has better Bokeh, while still giving a "sharp enough, but smooth look" to the Subject, while getting great control over Chromatic Aberration. That makes the value of the Sirui as a Portrait Lens even higher for many people.
@DustinAbbottTWI16 күн бұрын
That's fair.
@ryanbeer526212 күн бұрын
Impressive sirui managed to make such a compact lens & deliver impressive vinette performance. Im curious if it performs better on a lower MP sensor.
@DustinAbbottTWI11 күн бұрын
It should look sharper on a lower MP sensor.

Just get both lol you had some good points on them. Considering the brand new $500 price don’t think you can beat it. I’m holding out for the First Sony 85 1.2 bring it Sigma Sony Tamron anyone come on?

Viltrox 85 f/1.2 Lab is on the way
@DustinAbbottTWI12 күн бұрын
It does look like it will probably be Viltrox first, though I could definitely see Sigma doing an 85mm F1.2 instead of a MK 2 of this lens.

Hey Dustin. It’d be cool if you could review the Meike 55 1.8 Pro. Another cheaper lens that deserves some attention. Great review as always!

Sigma 85mm 1.4 DN looks beautiful; it is large and has a cool inverted folding diaphragm and looks quite seamless between the lens and the camera (other than not resonating with "Art series' shiny mount neck". The issue with sigma prime lenses is their horrible transmission and distortions resulting in strong vignetting and barreling.
@DustinAbbottTWI12 күн бұрын
This definitely has some strong pincushion distortion.
@photographerjonathan16 күн бұрын
I wish Sigma would make a new 85 f1.4. hasn't it been around five years since this one came out. I would also like to see a new 135 Art that is smaller and lighter. and i think it would be cool if a company put out a 35 to 85 f1.8 portrait zoom.
@DustinAbbottTWI12 күн бұрын
I wouldn't be surprised if Sigma actually tackles an 85mm F1.2 rather than just a MK II of this lens, as there isn't any critical flaw with this one other than having too much distortion.

Sigma 85 1.4 DG DN is my most used lens and never leaves my bag
@DustinAbbottTWI16 күн бұрын
I don't use it as much as I would like (so often I am shooting with review gear), but I'm happy with the results every time I use it.

I have a problem with an 85mm f1.4 that isn't sharp at f1.4. Seems like it's failing at the main task. If it doesn't sharpen up until f2 or 2.8, just get the Sony 85mm f1.8, which is as cheap, lighter and better or just get the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G2 zoom.
@xFreyelis16 күн бұрын
Sony 85mm 1.8 has a lot of Chromatic Aberration though, I mean, by a LOT. I had that lens
@DustinAbbottTWI16 күн бұрын
The Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 II might be a better choice for you, then.

I've done about a dozen Sirui reviews, and they've never mentioned anything about my pronunciation. I'll probably wait to hear from them just in case someone else is mispronouncing :)
