Hey Dustin, I bought this lens and found out it has some serious AF issues, independent of the Fuji system. As you said, tracking your cat, it would backfocus, but it even does so for many still objects. I tested it side by side against another budget lens by Meike and while the Meike hit every shot for still objects, the Sirui would backfocus about half of them. Needless to say my Fuji and Sigma lens don’t do this either. I tested close objects like my other lenses (focus on the 1.4 writing on the aperture ring, Sirui would confirm that green, then have the 5.6 in focus instead) and further away objects like parked cars. While none of the other lenses missed focus once, the Sirui couldn’t hit hit, it would acquire focus of the house behind or even the landscape in the background. I found if I had the chance to move a bit, I could get it in focus, but it’s almost like the lens has too big steps of where it can focus, so once you’re static and the object is between these steps, it just won’t focus on it. This would also explain why reviewers like Chris Frost had an unusually ghostly image at f1.2, because that’s exactly what happens when it backfocuses. Once I hit focus, sharpness is actually pretty impressive, not ghostly at all. I also found Arthur R had the same issue on his comparison against the Viltrox 75, his Sirui image is not on the same plane of focus. Both of them used Sony cameras. Was wondering if you found something similar in your copy apart from the tracking shots, because I think apart from the AF the lens is incredible value with decent sharpness and little to no fringing, and I’d like to keep it, but if this AF issue is baked into the lens independent of my copy, it’s quite frustrating to use.

I've noticed that Sirui shots were taken at shutter speeds twice faster than Viltrox shots. Was there a difference in lighting between the two shooting sessions or Sirui's light transmission is that much better? Excellent review as always, thanks!
@DustinAbbottTWI6 ай бұрын
It would be a difference in lighting between the two, though I do think the Sniper lenses are above average in light transmission. The cine versions of these lenses are all T1.2, which is very impressive.

Surely the autofocus problems are also connected to some fujifilm 'software' updates of its latest cameras, which have worsened the situation, restored only now with the latest update. The focus is managed by the camera, which reads the sensor and must identify the eye and so on, and must decide what to do, the lens simply does what the camera tells it to do.

There's no question that Fuji's autofocus quirks are the biggest piece of the equation. Unfortunately when I have only tested a lens on Fuji, I can't really parse out entirely what faults belong to the camera and which to the lens.

Hallo Dustin, thanks for another great review. Have you had these backfocusing problems as well? I've got my copy a few days ago, updated the firmware and found the same issue as drchtct below. Had the old firmware been (

Hello, I know my question is not related to this video, but Can you please advise, I can't make my mind between this lens the Tamron 70-180 g2 and the new Sony 70*200 F4 macro lens. I'm thinking to get the Sony but the F4 is making me hesitated as I do a lot portrait as well. But I like the idea of getting sony glass as it performs much better with Sony camera of course. How do you see it. Thanks so much for helping me out.🙏

That really depends on how much you need F2.8. Both lenses are excellent, and you just need to decide which serves your purpose better. I like both lenses a lot, though, if I were absolutely making a decision, I might lean towards the Sony for a few reasons.

Just a question, have you updated to the latest firmware for your XH2? If yes, how do you feel about it?
@DustinAbbottTWI6 ай бұрын
I have done the upgrade. Unfortunately I don't think firmware is going to catch Fuji's autofocus up. They need hardware improvements, not just software fixes.

Which do you prefer between this and Samyang 75 1.8? IQ consideration only
@FlyingBeeFPV6 ай бұрын
It would be really interesting comparing the new Sirui and Viltrox APSC 1.2 Lenses vs. the lightweight F 1.8 Fulframe Lenses in Bang for Buck, Weight, Bokeh, Versatility (Samyang Tiny, Sony 1.8,...) e.g Sony 6700, Viltrox 27 1.2 vs. Sony a7c 2, Samyang 45mm 1.8. What would you think Dustin?
@DustinAbbottTWI6 ай бұрын
I think the problem is that I months of reviews already scheduled. It is so hard these days to go back and review older products because there is so much new products all the time.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I understand thank you. I really enjoy your reviews all the time. I am really courious of the outcome of such a comparison since the bokeh would be really close also price ist not to different. Also it seems to me a market trend if you take the Panasonic s9 for example. As small compact and lightweight as it can get without a big sacrifice in imagequality, bokeh and lowlight capability. Also apple and DJI seem to be an the verge of competing in that category in the future. It is especially important to be able to be able to use small compact and travelfriendly gimbals. Can you tell me of the to of your head which combination you would choose? Thanks again Dustin for all your work

True. It's not as flexible a focal length as some others, even if the results look great.
